10 NEWS TUESDAY MAY 5 2015 GEELONGADVERTISER.COM.AU GATE01Z01MA - V1 A wider highway to Colac CONSTRUCTION has start- ed on the next stage of the Princes Highway duplication between Winchelsea and Colac. The project will see the highway upgraded to a four- lane divided road to improve safety and travel times. Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson was in Colac to mark the start of construction yesterday. “This route serves many im- portant industries in southwest Victoria, including agriculture, logging, grain growing, dairy and tourism,” Ms Henderson said. “The Princes Highway West is a major link to tourist attractions, such as the Great Ocean Road, and is a vital link for regional Victorians to com- mercial centres such as the port of Melbourne, Geelong and Portland.” She said the upgrade would increase efficiency and im- prove safety for motorists and heavy vehicles. Labor’s candidate for Cor- angamite Libby Coker wel- comed the start of construction. “It is going to help Colac to grow and prosper,” Ms Coker said. “From Waurn Ponds to Winchelsea there was over a year delay and I know for many local businesses it has been a real struggle. I hope the next stage is well managed and I look forward to the benefits that come from it.” Construction is expected to be completed in mid-2019. The federal and state gov- ernments have each commit- ted $185.5 million to complete the duplication between Winc- helsea and Colac. NICOLE MILLS BEAUTIFUL bows and buttons will line market stalls as the Portarlington community helps raise money for the Cancer Council. Ahead of the Buttons and Bows Exhibition and Fair on Sunday, May 17, Geelong and Bellarine locals have been creating artwork, quilts, cards and jewellery to sell in support of cancer sufferers. There will also be garden produce and preserves with bows around them for sale. One of the event’s organisers, Margaret Ogilvie, of Portarlington’s Community Association, said the theme offered enormous scope. “We decided on buttons and bows because we thought you could do almost any craft with them,” she said. A highlight of this year’s exhibition will be large wooden buttons running along the fence of the Portarlington Primary School, which will be decorated by students.
