    INTRODUCING SMARTSCALE

Welcome to Extensis pxl SmartScale, a powerful

scaling plug-in for Adobe Photoshop. SmartScale

includes the most advanced scaling technology

available and makes it easy to use with an

    intuitive interface.

    WHAT IS IMAGE RESAMPLING?

When you scale an image from one size to another,

the original image data is analyzed, interpolated

and recreated at the new size. When the scaled

image is created, SmartScale creates new pixels

based upon the original pixels. This process is

    called image resampling.

The PixelLive technology included in SmartScale

resamples your image. Since every image is unique,

SmartScale gives you the power to rene the scaledetails so you get a high quality scaled image

    every time.

    WHY DO I NEED SMARTSCALE?

In a world of digital images, frequently only one size

of image is available, and obtaining a higher quality

image can be time-consuming, inconvenient, or

impossible. If you are a photographer, graphic

designer or printing professional you know howcommon it is to resize images and reuse them for

different outputs. For example, an image may be

used for a postcard sized direct mail piece as well as

    a large poster.

With SmartScale, you can resize digital images upto 1600% of the original size with no discernable

loss in print quality. The resulting scaled image

maintains the quality and details of the original.

SmartScale gives you the ability to easily choose

scale settings and immediately preview the results.

You no longer need to wait through long processing

periods only to nd out that an image didnt scale

    as expected.

    HOW DOES

    SMARTSCALE WORK?

Using the PixelLive technology, SmartScale creates

superior quality scaled images by preserving the

brightness and color data of the original image.

SmartScale analyzes the original image and

stores the brightness and color information in a

    mathematical equation. SmartScale resamples the

image to the new size and then applies the color

and brightness information to the scaled image. The

nal result is a superior quality scaled image.

    ABOUT THIS USER GUIDE

The Extensis pxl SmartScale User Guide makes

extensive use of links that function only when

viewing the guide with Adobe Acrobat Readersoftware, version 5 or higher. The guide can be read

in other PDF document readers such as Apple

Preview, but the navigational aids, bookmarks

pane and live links either do not exist or will

not be usable. For these reasons, we recommend

use of Adobe Acrobat Reader 5 or higher with all

SmartScale PDF documentation. A free copy of the

latest Acrobat Reader can be downloaded from

    http://www.adobe.com .

Live links in this guide include all page number

entries in the Table of Contents and Index, and

wherever text is displayed in this style elsewhere

in the guide. In Acrobat Reader, the cursor will

change to a pointing hand when over a link, and

to a pointing hand with a w or plus sign when

over a link to a site on the World Wide Web, or an

    e-mail address.

Bulleted lists contain alternate ways of performing

the task being explained. Numbered lists contain

sequences of steps that should be performed

    in order.

SmartScales advanced scaling algorithm gives you

the power to rene the details of the scaled image

in the Detail palette. You can control the OverallSharpness, Edge Contrast, Edge Detail, and can also

    apply the Extreme Edges effect.

To effectively rene a scaled image, it is important

to understand the concept of an edge. Basically,

edges are areas of an image where signicant color

changes occur. For example, in a silhouette the

dramatic change from dark to light is considered

    an edge.

Quality adjustments are made in the Detail palette.

Click the Adjust Scaled Image check box to activate

    the Detail palette controls.

    Overall Sharpness

This controls how much SmartScale sharpens or

blurs the scaled image. These four settings, Sharp,

Normal, Smooth and Smoother affect the overall

    sharpness of the scaled image.

    Edge Contrast

This controls the amount of contrast applied to

the edges in the scaled image. The effect of edge

contrast is most visible in areas of signicant

    color variation.

    Edge Detail

This controls how closely SmartScale attempts to

represent details at the edges of a scaled image.

    Extreme Edges

This effect produces extremely sharp edges within

an image. This control is useful on computer-

generated images, illustrations and line drawings,

but should often be avoided with natural images

such as digital or scanned photographs.

    SCALING AN IMAGE

Powered by the most advanced scaling technology

available, SmartScale offers an easy, intuitive way to

scale images up to 1600% with no discernible loss inprint quality. SmartScales intuitive interface allows

you to preview scaling results on the y and get the

    high-quality results that you require.

    Image Size palette

The Image Size palette controls all image scaling. The

controls allow you to precisely scale an image up to

    1600% of the original size.

The maximum amount that you can scale an image islimited to 1600% or 30,000 pixels in either dimension, whichever is reached rst. The 30,000 pixel limit is themaximum dimension allowed in Adobe Photoshop.

    Pixel Dimensions

The Pixel Dimensions group box displays the

current pixel width and height of the image. These

dimensions are determined by the current documentsize and resolution.

    Scale Slider

Use the scale slider to quickly enlarge or reduce an

image. Click and drag the scale slider to choose a

scale value. Since the SmartScale window shows an

immediate preview of the scaled image, this is by far

the quickest way to view the results of scaling.

    Document Size

The Document Size group box shows you the current

printed dimensions and resolution of the image.

This information is also used to calculate the Pixel

Dimensions and le size of an image.

Typically, images are scaled by entering a new

resolution, as well as a width or height. The image

aspect ratio is always preserved during scaling, so

when you enter one dimension, the other adjustsautomatically. The new size information

can be entered in a variety of measurements,

    including a percentage.

    Resample Image

This check box turns scaling on and off. Typically

this box is checked. Uncheck this box if you want to

adjust the document size without changing the pixel

    dimensions.

    Reset Button

This button resets the pixel dimensions, document

size and resolution to the original settings. The Reset

button does not reset any image cropping.

    REFINING THE IMAGE

    QUALITY WITH THE

    DETAIL PALETTE

    SmartScales advanced scaling algorithm gives

you the power to rene the quality of the scaled

image. You can control the Overall Sharpness,

Edge Contrast, Edge Detail, and also apply the

    Extreme Edges effect.

To effectively rene a scaled image, it is important

to understand the concept of an edge. Basically,

edges are areas of an image where signicant color

changes occur. For example, in a silhouette thedramatic change from dark to light is considered

    an edge.

Scaling an image creates an entirely new set of pixels

for the scaled image. SmartScale uses the PixelLive

technology to make a number of decisions about

how to create those new pixels. The Detail palette

settings allow you to control these decisions and

rene the overall quality of the scaled image.

To begin rening the scaled image, click the Adjust

Scaled Image check box to activate the detail

controls. When the detail settings are changed, the

image preview is updated immediately to show the

effect of each change on the scaled image.

Detail controls are only effective on images that havebeen scaled up. Adjust scale settings before choosingDetail settings.

To improve the preview speed of a scaled image, youmay wish to temporarily disable the detail controls. Todo so, uncheck the Adjust Scaled Image check box.

The following example images are scaled 200% and

are zoomed in 500% to better show the results of

    the Detail palette settings.

    Overall Sharpness

This controls how much SmartScale sharpens or

blurs the scaled image. The four settings range in

increments from Sharp to Smoother. The Sharp

setting provides the least amount of smoothing to

the scaled image, while Smoother applies the most.

    Edge Contrast

This controls the edge contrast level in the scaled

image. The effect of edge contrast is most visible

in areas of an image where signicantly differentcolors meet.

    Edge Detail

This controls how closely SmartScale attempts torepresent details at the edges of a scaled image. Low

detail provides a general approximation of edges,

and tends to provide a more natural feel.

    Extreme Edges

This effect produces extremely sharp edges within

an image. Extreme Edges is useful on computer-

generated images, illustrations and comics, but isshould often be avoided with natural images such

    as digital or scanned photographs.

    Powerful le compression

SmartScale has a powerful built-in compression

le format, PixelLive (VFZ). This le format is a

compressed format that provides visually lossless

    compression for images.

You have a choice of six compression levels to t

your varying le size and quality needs. Even at the

highest quality level, PixelLive les are reduced to

about 60% of comparable TIFF le size. Image les

at this quality level can be converted from another

le format into PixelLive les and then back to theoriginal le format without any loss in quality. The

highest compression level produces proof quality

    images that are easily emailed.

    Password protection

A layer of password protection is added with the

PixelLive protected (PFZ) le format. PixelLive

protected les can be saved from Photoshop or

    SmartScale.

    Password authentication in PixelLive protected

les can be stored locally with the le, or on a

server. Local protection embeds one username and

SmartScale uses your computers physical and

virtual memory to store and scale images. Unlike

the use of scratch disks by Photoshop to supplement

physical RAM, SmartScale uses the same virtual

memory that your operating system uses.

The allocation of RAM and conguring of virtual

memory varies with each system conguration. The

following pages explain how to allocate RAM and

increase virtual memory settings for all supportedoperating systems.

For optimal performance, it is recommended that thePhotoshop scratch disk be created on a drive that doesnot contain the virtual memory of the operating system.

How much memory do I need?

The amount of memory that SmartScale uses varies

by the size of the original image and how much the

    image is being scaled.

Basically, youll want to have as much physical RAM

and as large of a virtual memory space as possible.

With a fairly simple formula you can calculate an

    estimate of the memory requirements.

The memory (in MB) required by SmartScale=

(Original image height x width x channels) +(Scaled image height x width x (channels +1))

    1,000,000

    Image height and width

The height and width in pixels is displayed in

the Pixel Dimensions group box of the Image

    Size palette.

    Channels

This is the number of channels, not including any

alpha channels. This can be found on the channels

palette in Photoshop. Do not count the combinedchannel at the top of the list.

The following are numbers of channel for supported

    image types:

    Mac OS X native

If you are running an OS X native version of

Photoshop (version 7 or higher), your memory is

managed by the operating system. OS X creates

virtual memory on the startup disk of your

computer, and can use up to 4 GB if necessary.

To ensure that SmartScale has enough memory,

make sure that there is a large amount of free space

    on the startup disk.

    Mac OS X classic mode

When you run Photoshop in classic mode on OS X,you must allocate sufcient memory to Photoshop

to ensure that SmartScale runs smoothly.

    To allocate memory to Photoshop:

    Mac OS 9

Like other classic applications, Photoshop running

in OS 9 requires you to allocate sufcient memory

for SmartScale to run smoothly. To supplement your

physical RAM, it is also highly recommended that

    you turn virtual memory on.

To allocate more memory to Photoshop:

    1. Locate the Photoshop application in the Finder.
