Page 2: Q double page spread

• Layout and Design – The DPS is set out in a classic style and is mainly text led with the exception of a couple of pictures. There are five columns of text in the DPS which shows us that Q magazine is for a more mature audience who prefer to read about the band rather than look at pictures. The columns are organised in a classic style apart from on the second page, where the images split the text up, so the text starts on the right hand side of the page and then goes to the left below the images.

• Images Used – The images used in the DPS are not overly big as both pages have enough room for a lot of text. The image on the first page shows the band together when they were in their teens, which tells the reader straight away that the band members have been friends for a long time. On the opposite page there are three images, one of Matt Bellamy on his own, as he is the front man. The caption tells us that he is conducting the music in his head in this image. The next image is one of the band performing at Wembley Stadium, London, in July 2007. The last image is one of the whole band recording ‘new album The resistance in Milan’. The four images give different aspects of the band, the first of them being teenagers who hadn’t yet made it. The next of Matt Bellamy in a photo shoot promoting the band. Then there is a image of the band doing what they do best performing at their most famous performance at Wembley. Finally there is a image of the boys in the studio working on their new album.

• Pull Quote – The pull quote reads “It can’t be coincidence we’re a band of misfits.” readers may relate to being a misfit which may encourage them to read the article. It also in a sense defines the band as the music they create is different to anything else in the music industry at the present time. The way the media has portrayed them in the past also gives this misfit impression so readers may be interested in why, they are misfits.

• Copy – The article has a mix of descriptive language and direct quotes from the band. In the article we are given a sneak peak into the lives of Matt Bellamy and co. I think that Muse would be happy with the article as it gives the band a good image as it makes them seem down to earth guys who are living their dream.

• VALS – The target audience would probably have a strong interest in Muse and possibly be quite a misfit like Matt Bellamy, who describes himself as one. Readers would also be older than the readership of magazine such as Kerrang and NME, this would probably be down to the style of writing and the amount of text there is in each Q article, as they are more text led than image led.

• Photoshop CS3 Techniques – The photoshop techniques used are to do with the images. The image on the first page is tilted slightly as to give a sort of scrap book effect. The other images on the second page are layered together and make the most of the space to allow more text to fit in.
