Also start planning you display now; it's imperative that we all contribute to this vital part of our meetings and not let the same old hands bring all of the displays. FOR THE GALS: The subject at the meeting will be ''herbs". Lenora Brown's friend Fritzy Bleckner will head up a program featuring; herb gardens to visit, books on herbs, mortars and pestles, growing herbs, herb bouquets, etc. This is just a skeleton gals, however, as always, the meat on the bones is your participation. Do you have some seed or plants that you can bring to sell, display, share, or exchange? How about books on herbs to share? We plan to make our own herb chart to add to our cookbook, so jot down the special ways you use herbs. SPRING MEETING OF MWTC IN PERRYSBURG, OHIO May 5, 6, & 7, 1978

You all should have recently received your initial notice of the Spring Meeting. I just received mine and I'm starting to pack my bags already. Knowing the talents of Cliff Brown and Ron Mossing have been put to the test, I'm sure we can all look forward to another super meeting .

Don't drag your feet. The reservations for the meeting have to be mailed to Keith Mansfield prior to April 29th or you will have to pay the late registration fee. The hotel reservations are on your own so take care of that matter with the Holiday Inn right away also.

It sounds like the program on the Sandusky Tool Co. should be very enlightening as well as the coopering demonstration. I've seen some of Ray Smith's fine tools so we can all look forward to a spirited auction on Friday night.

I'm sure all of you were glad to hear that we will all be staying under one roof and not scattered around in nearby motels. A lot of you have complained about this in the past.

So clean up those tools you want to swap or sell ( Cliff, would you make sure that Ron cleans up his act a little bit too. I've heard about some of the things he brings to unload!). CHAFF FROM THE PRESIDENT

In November, 1977, I wrote to your officers, directors and committee chairmen, outlining the many things we as an organization are doing to sustain our growth pattern. It is difficult to tell for sure what the membership total is because MaPion Henley keeps sending me new members names, but as of 8:15 P.M. on 2/26/78 the total was 655. That's a net gain of 48 members since the Hannibal meeting.

This growth is not accidental, but due to many peoples efforts and I thank all of you for those efforts. However, I would like to specifically acknowledge effort above and beyond:

Bill Holden - for his terrific job in putting out the Grist Mill Marion Henley - for his secretarial efforts and the important part he plays in our special publications committee Fred Malott - special publications chairman who's group just sent the Barnes catalog and will dis tribute the. 1925 Sandusky Tool Co. catalog at our May meeting. If you can't attend the meeting your catalog will be mailed after the meeting. In addition, there are several other projects underway.

These folks and their committees ( I still haven't found out who else is on my committee ),are spending 55% of our total income to give the membership maximum return for their dues. We owe them and their committees a rousing thanks.

Northern Illinois is hosting a unique mini-meet to encourage participation of the membership who can't attend our semi-annual meeting. This meeting will a little larger than our normal area meets and details are included in the Grist Mill.

Bill Rigler, President *******************************************************************

FUTURE MEETINGS SCHEDULE

How's this for super organization. Our officers and those from EAIA have laid out a schedule of meetings that is all locked up for as far ahead as 1980. This is the kind of professionalism that I for one like to see in an orgaination. If your calander stretches out that far mark all of the dates. If not, make sure you file this issue where you can find it later.

FLAILINGS

Bob Brackett from Itasca Illinois has been on the speaking circuit lately. As a executive for the Zenith Corporation he recently spoke to the American Purchasing and Inventory Control society in Chicago and repeated with a second performance in Milwuakee. We've got all kinds of hidden talent in this group!

*******************************************************************************

ARE YOU ABSENT-MINDED OR JUST LAZY? Have you paid your dues for 1978 yeJ? The final reminder letter was mailed in January. The Spring Meeting in May is the cut- off date. Any members not paying their dues by that date will be dropped from the roles. I understand we still have members who are dragging their feet! *******************************************************************************

PERSONAL NOTE: One of our So. Indiana members, suddenly in December. He was very active in the historical society as well as a tool collector. to this widow, Charolette.

M. Glenwood Armstrong passed away church, community, and local Our smpathy has been passed along

Another sad note. I just heard yesterday that Will Pennington a former active member in the No. Illinois area died on January 30th. Will's health had been very bad for some time and this in one of ther reasons he had to drop from our organization. His first love was duck decoys, but he was also interested in early hand tools. I think this interest started with the hand craftsmanship necessary in carvi_ng the decoys. I will send Dot a note from the group.

*******************************************************************************

Word come from Jim Agne down in Columbia, Ill. that the 9th Annual Fort de Chartres Rendezvous is scheduled for June 17th & 18th this year. This event takes place each year in this town located just below St. Louis. They feature colonial activities such as flintlock competition, tomahawk throwing, blacksmith and carpentry demonstrations, herb displays, candlemaking, basket making etc. I imagine Jim will be demonstrating his big-wheel lathe again. The nearest motels are in Collinsville I understand, so if you want more details, contact Jim.

********************************************************************************

HELP WANTED -- Glenn Anderson, 3056 Ithica, Boise, Idaho 83705 is rebuilding an American Mill Machinery Co. TRIUMPH 24 inch planer (circa 1925-1930). Can anyone help him by providing set/up operating instructions? He also needs a set of 24" knives for this machine. ******************************************************************************** Don Buttel out Denver way passed along some information on the Woodchopper's Jamboree schedule for June 17 - 18 in Encampment , Wyoming.

The event features tree felling, axe chopping, pole throw, and all of the many sawing competitions. Throw in _an amateur rodeo and it sounds like quite a show. For more details contact the Encampment-Riverside Lions Club who sponsor the event .

LOCAL MEETINGS

Soneone down in Central Indiana 1 ives right. Seeing as this has to do with control I ing the elements, I 1 11 put my dough on Ray Wilson.

Ray had the clan over on January 22. This date fell in between two of the most severe winter storms in Indiana history. (In fact, Ray says one was the worst since 1886). If the meeting had been scheduled a week later some of the members might still be there shovelling that white stuff off of their cars.

As it turned out, seventy four die-hard tool collectors were on hand with outof-staters from Illinois, Michigan Ohio, and Tennessee to display, swap, tell lies, and assuredly eat.

Not wasting the opportunity , they planned the summer get together while they were gathered at Ray 1 s.

On hand for the festivities were: Penny & Carl Bilderback, Lois & Dick Opsahl, Mil & Ken Wasson, Tom Witte, Eila & Mo Arnold, the Riglers, the Malotts, Ruby & Don Reagan, Marilyn & Don Johnston, Dorthy & Don Mees, Marvin Johnson, Marj & Dean Garber, Evelyn & Dick Miller, Al White, Mildred & Clarence Ade, Mary & Paul Reed, George & Mary Lou Williams, Gina Sue & George Williams, Warren Roberts, Dorothy & Jim Grant, Gene Pittman ( I can almost remember what he looks like), Martha & Ed Tyler, Billie & Nick Larocco, Marjorie & Wayne Carmony, Virginia &

Clyde Winton, Dan Macinnis, Curtis Hendern, Mary & Gil Gandenberger, Mary &

Charles Ramsey, Lynn & Ken Runkle, Helen & Erd Hansen, Mac McKenzie, Ramona & Milan Ramsey, Juanita & Woody Vandivier, Della & Irvin Steuer, Marilyn & Tom Hoffman, Thelma & Bob Wagoner, Faye & David Horney, Jack Opsahl, Janice & John Eaton, George Charbonneau, and of course, the host and hostess with the mostest, Catherine and Ray Wilson.

*******************************************************************************

The Colorado "Regulars" were at it again on the same date, Jan. 22nd. I think they now call their meetings bi-monthly. It seems they never stop having meetings. Mel Flannagan hosted this one at his Redi-Mix Batch Plant in Aurora, Colorado. (I've often thought one of those big mixers would be ideal to mix up a salad, or whip up a dessert at one of our gastronomical tool meetings!).

Mel's collection features particular emphasis on tools related to antique autos but he also collects woodworking tools. Twenty members and guests were on hand to share the day's activities. Those two nomads from New Mexico, Bill McDougall and Ernie Blumenthal travelled 500 miles to attend. I think if Arnold and Walker in Suffolk, England had an open house they would show up!.

True to form, the Colorado "nuts" have a meeting scheduled for March 12th. Not to be a name dropper, but maybe if I mention it often enough and Bill Rigler mentions it often enough, some of our less-active directors will get the message about planning local meetings. ********************************************************************************

I ~aved thi~ ~paee to 6ill in with a ~ho~t w~ite-up on a local meeting which might eome in at the la~t minute, but ala~, it look~

like we only have two meeting~ to mention. Zt mu~t be that eve~yone i~ waiting to have a meeting thi~ ~umme~. 1 ~u~e hope ~o.

FUTURE LOCAL MEETINGS

On April 8th, Forrest and Margie Sloan will be lifting the latch at their place and entertaining the members down in the TennesseeKentucky area. However, if you plan to be in the area at that time, give Forrest a call and get the details. They live at 1514 Sherrill Blvd., Murfreesboro, TN 37130, phone 615-890-1891. (this is a new address so please note the change). Incidentally, I apologize to the members down there. I rapped them for not having local meetings in a recent issue only to find out they had a couple of meetings that I had not heard about. It is important that someone be designated to write a report about these meetings and pass it along to me so that I can give it some publicity.

Northern Illinois Mini-Meet Saturday, April 1st

. We are trying something different this time. As ha~beenthe case in the past, when we hold are semi-annual meetings at the Eastern or Western states, we lose a considerable ntn11ber of members from the other end. As long as we don't slight either group this is fine.

I

Our local get together in No. Illinois has been planned as an experimental m1m1-meet. We hope to offer an opportunity to the members in some of the more Western • state who just can't possibly swing the three day trip to Ohio to still take a more active part in the organization. PLEASE MAKE EVERY ATTEMPT TO ATIEND 1HE OHIO l\1EETING . AS I MENTIONED IT SOUnDS GREAT. ONLY AS A SECOND CHO I CE LET' S SEE HOW Tiffi MINI IDEA WORKS. 1HE BEST SOLUTION IS TO ATTEND BOIB l\1EETINGS.

We will have craft demonstrations centering around the theme of tools used for carving bowls, woodenware and maple sugar molds. We will also have a demonstration for the gals on making com husk dolls. We plan to have displays (so if you come plan to bring one), swap sessions and the usual fellowship.

The meeting will be held at the Holiday Inn at 345 River Rd., Elgin, Il 60120. The meeting will start at 2:00 P.M. which means you can plan to drive Sat. morning and not miss half of the fun. The Holiday Inn is at the intersection of Ill. State Rt #31 and Interstate I-90. (for those who plan to stay overnight the rates are $24.50 dnuble room and $20,.50 single room). Motel reservations must be in before March 2 O th to guarantee a room. We hope quite a few will plan to stay over as Sunday morning is the date of the Kane County Flea Market just 20 minutes away.

Reservations for the meeting including a buffet super on Saturday night are $9.00 per person and checks should be made payable to Nick Larocco and mailed to him at

1105 Birch St., Lake-of-the-Hills, Algonquin, Il 60102 before March 23rd.

As I mentioned before, this is a test case. WE hope that you members in Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Minnesota, Wiscnnsin and all points west can squeeze this mini-meet into your schedules and take an active part in our meetings. ****************************************************************** tLASH! Two more local meetings just came over the wire! Mark these dates! Len Borkowski has schedulded a local meeting at Ft. Atkinson, WI on Sat. June 17th and Marj Carmony has scheduled one for the following week-end in Manilla, Indiana. Details will be forthcoming.

It has been suggested that I review the schedule of rates for placing ads in this collUilil. They are: $1.00 for three lines, and 30¢ for each additional line. A line is approximately 35 typed characters including punctuation and spaces. Ads should be for one issue only, and should be mailed to Marilyn Hoffman, 685 Hillside,Glen Ellyn, Il 60137. A check made out to MIWC Treasurer should accompany ads (no cash please). The Grist Mill is published four times a year: March, June, September, and December. Plan to have your ads in Marilyn's hands the end of the previous month in order for it be in the following month's issue. It would be very helpful to the officers and the editor of the Grist Mill to hear from those of you who have run ads in previous issues. Have they produced results? Have they been a bust? Any cormnents or constructive suggestions you wish to pass along about changing or improving this facit of our newsletter will be appreciated.

SPARE PARTS DEPARTMENT

This new concept kicked off at the Hannibal meeting, but did not get off to a rousing success. This was primarily a matter of timing. The issue of the Grist Mi 11 giving the details did not get mailed in advance of the meeting, but was passed out at the meeting. Thus, many members did not know anything about the idea. The net of it is, bring those odd spare parts to the meeting, drop them in the box so marked and take out someone else's discard. No parts are to be sold and no money is to change hands ... just spare parts. This is really the place for you "Stanley" nuts to pick up al 1 of those parts I see advertised.

NOTE: It is imperative that all directors make special note of the changes involving members in their area. It would be much simpler if all of you would pi:ck a nice spot to live and then stay there!

A WORD FROM YOUR PUBLICATION'S COMMITTEE

Since Bill Rigler appointed your special publications committee, consisting of Marion Henley, Cliff Brown, Jim Agne and myself, we have been having a ball at your expense. If we do something good we hope you will give us a lot of praise so we feel loved. If we goof it up, PLEASE blame Bill Rigler.

In response to Marion's request, you have been generous with your remarks (and mostly positive!). Also there have been numerous offers of material for use by the committee. We are thankful for this in that it affords us a large body of material from which to choose that gem that will be a hit with you.

We are trying to choose the items which we use with the following concern: (1) will it be a hit with MOST of you? (2) Can we do it? (we obviously can not do large items) (3) Can we affort it? (we are limited by a budget which accounts for a large chunck of your dues)

We have been having such a good time that we have spent or committed all of this year's money. We hope to net a few dollars by selling some of the things we have done to our sister groups. They (especially ETC.) have been quite generous in the past and have furnished us with numerous pieces. If we can make a buck o~ two we may be able to do an additional item or two! Our efforts now are directed largely toward what we can do next year.

I will probably ask Cliff to provide us with a niche in his plans for the Spring Meeting so that we can screen any material you are willing to bring for our consideratdon.

I can not stop without thanking Marion for the great amount of work he is doing. You all owe him, at least, a large box of chocolates. (on po~~ibly tho~e Qanved and dated 16th Cen~uny tool~ that you didn't ~end to the Edi~on 06 the Gni~tmilL.).
