Q1: In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

CD Cover –Abstract theme allows me to stick within the conventions of Indie album artwork as using photography or artwork for the cover, instead of a picture of the band. The cover sets the theme for all aspects of the coursework, including the video. The CD cover was created before the video was, this meant that I could match themes to the video which are portrayed in the ancillary task.

CD Cover Back – Simplistic theme which matches both the front cover and the magazine advert while also allowing the theme of the album to be portrayed as memories and the past, which is why I created a polaroid theme for the ancillary task.

Magazine Advert -I copied the simplistic, polaroid theme which match the front cover and digipak, this allows the finished product to look professional rather than mismatched.

This fits the convention that media texts should have a connection to each other in a digipak and album cover. This also fits the indie convention that album artwork is usually abstract, rather than an image of the band/artist.

Title scene to establish song, genre and themes of the video. I found in my research that this is an uncommon thing to do in a music video, which is exactly why I did it. I wanted to create a music video that resembled a short film, following the actions of a young man and a girl during a breakup.

Music and visuals match to fit Andrew Goodwin's Theory of Six. This is also very common in indie music videos. As there is most always an element of performance.

This shot allows the setting to be established, which is a vital part of any video/film/show. In my opinion, this is one of the most important things to establish in a media text. It allows the audience to feel comfortable and safe.

One convention I used that conforms with Goodwin's Theory creating a level of intimacy between the performer and the audience. I applied this in my video by using a close up of my actor singing, to establish a bond straightaway in the video.

Another element I had taken from Goodwin's Theory is the match between lyrics and visuals. I felt this was also important to add to the narrative and character depth.

Eye contact was used in the chorus as it established the bond even further to allow the audience to feel welcome/wanted by the artist.

I included the narrative to allow character depth, an important convention in most media texts, particularly music videos where the record label wants a personal conncetion to be formed between the audience and band/artist.
