Q1

In what ways does your media products use , develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products.

• We choose to a follow a Indie/Folk music video convention. We also followed most music videos conventions in general which are to entertain , promote the album, artist and song. Within the Indie genre, Their main focus is on the artist’s talent and what their lyrics are about. as it better because it is an upcoming artists and it will gain him fans and sells if we follows pervious conventions. They also tend to have minimal costumes changes, props , locations and lighting. In addition Indie genres are most likely to have a narrative. And in terms of post production(CD cover/ Album and Advertisement) they tend to keep it very simple.

Examples of Indie Albums/ Artists

Costume Compassion

We decided to have 2 costume changes (he’s wearing a jacket over the top he was wearing in the middle image) because we didn’t want to draw attention away from the artist’s talent and it fits perfectly with the convention of the Indie genre music video. In fact most of the time they tend to have 1 or two costume changes, also they tend to be high-street fashion , very basic nothing pricey. Some don’t even have the artist present in the music video because their main focus is promoting their artist's talent unlike Pop and RnB who go over the top when it come to their costume changes.Inspiration/Examples

Sam Smith – Stay With Me

Ed Sheeran – Thinking Out Loud. This music video Ed Sheeran has one outfit change throughout the song

Theories • As shown in video below this presentation , we followed Carol Vernallis

and Andrew Goodwin’s Theory. Carol studied editing and camera work specifically in music videos and Goodwin’s idea which he’s discovered through his narrative analysis of music video. We wanted to follow some conventions of the Indie genre and Vernallis and Goodwin enable us to do.

My artists tells a story of him reminiscing about his ex girlfriend. We followed this convention because it is generic in Indie genre. (to have a storyline)

Ancillary Products Comparisons

My Inside Panel Real Music Product

I really like how simplistic this inside panel was and I wanted to keep mine the same. The colour scheme is consistent all over this album and the fonts compliment each other.

This is a front cover, of an album however it influenced me. I really like the blurred image at the front and I thought it looked weird, supernatural and ghostly. It also links with my album because he is ‘Lost’ within his feeling and the blurred image could suggest how it views life. Which is why I used it for my inside panel.

My Advertisement Real Advertisement

For my advertisement I induced the album cover at the front , and it’s very conventional to keep the same colour scheme and similar fonts as the album so your target audience can establish synergy links between the products. Jack White keeps his advertisement very simple which is typical in the Indie genre and I took a lot of inspiration form it. In terms of information I tried to add a variety of information that will benefit my audience .

My Front Cover

Real Front Cover

I drew my attention to Arctic Monkeys album cover. I like the close up that was used , it’s conventional for me to do so because my artists is upcoming and it vital that he has an image of his face because he need to gain a wider fan base. I also drew inspiration from the simplicity of the album cover as Indie genres tend to focus less on what the album looks like and the appearance of the artist. Instead they want their audience to focus more on their music. I also like how basic the colour scheme is throughout the album. It’s simple yet eye-catching.
