Chelsea Tipton II
Music Director
The Symphony of Southeast Texas
4345 Phelan Blvd, Suite 105
Beaumont, TX 77707
(409) 892-2257
Q: When and how did you get start-ed in music? A: I started in the 3rd grade - being in orchestra class got me out of PE, and the "viola" seemed like an exotic choice to set me apart from the conventional choices of my peers. Q: When did you begin playing with the SOST? A: I started as a substitute violist while in graduate school around 2006, and won the position of Principal Viola in 2009. Q: Educational background? A: Bachelor of Music in Viola Perfor-mance and Women's Studies - Van-derbilt University; Master of Music in Viola Performance - Rice University Q: Who has been your greatest influ-ence in music? A: My teachers James Dunham, Steve Wyrczinski, and Catharine Carroll.
Q: What is your “day job?” A: Viola is a 24/7 "job" for me. In addition to my duties with SOST, I am the violist and educational director of a non-profit string quartet, Apollo Chamber Players, based in Houston. I also am on staff at Rice University as a pre-college viola instructor, and I am also involved with coaching Houston Youth Symphony and its chamber music program. Q: Hobbies or activities outside of SOST? A: My cats, reading, being a foodie, being a feminist. Q: Favorite music? A: Anything with a good (i.e. non-mind numbing) viola part. So, most late Romantic works like Brahms symphonies and works by Richard Strauss, and early 20th century works by Stravinsky and Sibelius.

Classic Series II : November 16, 2019 “A Celebration of Mozart, Rossini and SOST!”
Classic Series III : February 15, 2020 “The Romantic Spirit of Music”
Our musical spirits come to life with the music of Rossini, Mozart
and Vaughn Williams. Hear how Mozart’s impressions live on in
Rossini’s Barber of Seville Overture, based on the central character
of Figaro from the opera bearing his name! One of Mozart’s final
symphonies, number 39, reveals the amazing example his music
had on future generations of composers.
Carrying on the tradition, Maestro Tipton has asked Whitney
Bullock, Principal Violist, to round out our concert with Vaughn
Williams’ beautiful folk song Suite for Viola and Orchestra, tradi-
tionally displaying the breadth of virtuosity of our symphony
musicians.

Guest Artists: Dalton Woody and Angela Pickering
Featuring the SOST Chorus!
Our concert tonight starts with a thank you note to the University of Breslau by
Johannes Brahms for his honorary doctorate degree. Composed as an overture
containing a set of student drinking songs, cleverly orchestrated, and conducted
by Brahms himself, this overture displays his many gifts, transforming simple
tunes into a grand overture. Thus, the Academic Festival Overture is such a set of
songs of celebration that has lived well past graduation day in 1880.
The featured work of tonight’s concert features a choral classic, the Faure Requi-
em. Faure ’s work follows the format of the traditional Catholic Requiem mass
with its standard text. It was not composed or dedicated to any specific individ-
ual and received several performances, including Faure’s own funeral.
Lastly, Howard Hanson’s music is picturesque, filled with imagery of oceans,
mountains and serene nature. Hanson spent many summers at the National
Music Camp at Interlochen, Michigan, and this camp is said to be the source of
his inspiration.

Maestro’s Notes We excited to be featuring one of our exceptional orchestra
members for this concert.
Violist Whitney Bullock has been with SOST for over 10
years. In addition to her extensive freelancing in the
Houston area, she also works as the Education and Out-
reach Director for the Apollo Chamber Players with fellow
violinist, Matthew Detrick. The viola has a beautiful, round, resonant sound that is
superbly featured in the Suite for Viola and Orchestra by Ralph Vaughan Williams.
Opening the concert is the ever familiar Barber of Seville Overture by Rossini. The
familiar strains may take you back to your childhood watching the Warner Bros.
cartoons featuring Bugs Bunny. Remember the classic "The Rabbit of Seville?"
Rounding out our classics concert will be Mozart’s charming and bucolic,
Symphony No. 39. Mozart lived a short life, and during the time that he composed
this masterpiece, he was going through significant personal struggles. The work is
beautifully lyrical with autumnal tones– perfect for this time of year. I look forward to
seeing you at the Julie!
