5s Methodology•Sort : Removing unnecessary items, obstacles from workplace thus making work easier.

•Set In Order : Arrange all necessary items, making it easier to access them and hence preventing loss and waste of time.

•Shine : Keeping workplace clean and safe and preventing machinery and equipment deterioration.

•Standardize : Maintain orderliness, adapt best practices and maintain high standards.

•Sustain : Consistent training, maintaining discipline and performing regular audits.

Poor 5s Practices

•Useless, unwanted items present in various laboratories.•Occupying space and obstructing work.

After Sorting

•All items which were not required were either disposed or kept in storage place.•The laboratories thus consisted of only useful items hence making work easier.•The chance of getting distracted and obstructed by useless items was minimized.

•Unorganized and random arrangement of items in laboratories.•Thus it becomes difficult to work resulting in wastage of time and energy

Setting In Order• All the items were properly arranged by grouping similar items.• Thus smooth work flow was ensured.

Good 5s Practices

Shine•Labs are kept clean and sanitized preventing machinery and equipment deterioration.•Lab being clean it becomes easy and safe to work.•Thus making the lab “Shine” helps improve efficiency.

Standardizing

•All processes were modified so as to maintain a certain standard.

•High standards of organization and cleanliness were followed.

•Ensured the first three stages of "5S" are maintained by assigning tasks to appropriate people.

Sustain

•In order to maintain the positive results of previous 5s practices, it is important to ‘sustain’ them.

•Each 5s practice should be performed on daily basis.

• Training and discipline must be imparted in everyone making them conscious about the task they must perform.

•A weekly audit should be conducted to check the progress and steps should be taken to amend any diminishment.

Lessons Learned

•Disposing the waste from lab table makes working conditions favourable.•If apparatus is kept in proper arranged manner it becomes easier to access it.•Thus time is saved and efficiency of work is increased.•As it is said “Cleanliness is next to Godliness”, it is advisable to keep workplace clean.•One must maintain a high standard in every task performed.•All qualities imbibed must be implemented everyday.
