Fixing the trunking back (QDT602) to the wall:The sections should be fixed straight and level from the frontview, so be sure to use a spirit level and straight edge acrossthe joints. It is also important that bumps or hollows in the wallshould be accommodated by packing pieces placed behindthe trunking to bring it out to the highest point of the wall. IMPORTANT: ENSURE THE EARTH CLAMPS AREFITTED IN THE SLOT PROVIDED IN THE TRUNKINGBACK BEFORE FIXING TO THE WALL (see p11).

Assembly & FittingJoining trunking back lengths and corners(QDT603, 604, 605)To join lengths of trunking back or corners insertjoining pins (QDT639) half way into holes in back, before fixing to wall. Fix part to wall. Slide adjoiningpart onto joining pins before screwing to wall. Ifbutting up to the corner of a wall, push joining pinsright into one part, align and fix second part to wall.Slide joining pins into central position. Use a hammerand a screwdriver as shown below.

To secure, drill 0.5mm holes through the trunking; areas Aand B are recommended. Fixings should be placed in eacharea. Number 10 steel round-headed wood screws are inmost cases ideal at 0.5m intervals but the exact choice ofsize, length and position of fixings will depend on the typeof wall, material and construction.

Fitting slim end caps (QDT608) to thetrunking backThis can be done after fitting the trunking to thewall. when fitting near a return wall or surfaceremember to allow enough room for a screwdriver.

Cutting trunking sectionsAs accuracy of the cutting angle and finish of the cutedge is important, a power saw fitted with a special TCTblade for aluminium cutting is recommended. It is alsorecommended that a small piece of slim cover isinserted onto the BACK to keep it rigid whilst cutting. The Wandsworth Group Ltd also offer a cutting service.

Cable retaining clipsTo secure cables in the back, retention clipsmay be made from Duct Cover (QDT618)mcutting pieces 50mm long and fitting them intothe centre sections of the back as shown:

Page 8: QDT600 Trunking System Installation Manual - … · QDT Trunking Components The body and covers of the trunking are made from extruded aluminium with a creamy white semi-gloss finish

Fitting back cover (QDT622)To fit the back cover load the lower edge intothe mating face of the back and close bypush-snapping the top into place. Ensure thatcables are in duct ways and not trapped bycovers.

Cover removal toolTo remove either back covers or services side coversinsert the cover removal tool, either as shown orusing th reverse side, and turn it outwardly from thewall until the cover comes off.

Internal corner covers (QDT603)Short pre-machined mitred covers are supplied aspart of the corner. They will not snap directly intotheir corner positions. Snap-fit them a shortdistance from the corner and slide them into place.

Vertical corner covers (QDT605)Short pre-machined mitred covers are supplied aspart of the corner. They will not snap directly intotheir cornder positions. Snap-fit them a shortdistance from the corner and slide them into place.

External corner cover (QDT604)Pre-fabricated mitred covers are supplied as partof the corner. They snap directly onto their cornerpositions. Place them exactly over the corner andsnap them home.

Fitting the back extensions (QDT618)Where services are required extension pieces areneeded. They fit over the prong shaped upstands of theback. Where a services end cap is required, theextensions should be pre-drilled for the fixing screws;they also have to be drilled for box fixing screws and forscrews that secure extensions where no box is spacednearer than a half metre. The extension piece with theeven slot with a thread form in it marked ‘top’ is theupper extension and the one with the uneven box shapeon the outer side is the lower one.

BoxesWhere boxes are to be fitted the upper and lower backextension pieces need to be drilled for the box fixingscrews. To do this place the box in position and marktrough the box fixing holes into the V slots of theextensions, then drill with a 03mm bit. Boxes shouldbe fitted using only the special earthing screwsprovided.

DrillingCare should be taken when dilling through the backetensions not to drill into the screw thread form of theback.

Duct cover (QDT618)This is used on the services section and is fitted betweenboxes for segregating the different channels. Fitting of thiscan be done by feeding in from one end or feeding in fromthe front by placing one edge in the channel of the back orextension and squeezing the opposite edge into theopposite channel.

When fitting trunking units directly adjacent to each other a 27mm spacercan be used between boxes and/ or gas grids to position them correctly.

Medical gas outletsWhere medical gas outlets are to be fitted, the upperand lower back extension pieces need to be pre-drilledto clear the grid fixing screws. The extension pieceupper or lower also has to be cut so as to clear thepipework to the outlet. WHEN FITTING MEDAES GASOUTLETS ENSURE THAT THE BOX STUDS ARECENTRAL IN THE GAS OUTLET MOUNTING SLOTS.CHECK THAT THE OUTLET IS CENTRAL IN THECOVER PLATE HOLE BEFORE FINAL FIXING.

Fitting pipe clips (QDT635 & 636)Pipe clips are fitted on any one of theeight ‘T’ sections, six on the back andone on each of the extensions. To fit, firts hook the clip over the required ‘T’and rotate to secure. No fixings arerequired as when the pipes are fittedthey lock the clips into position asshown in fig 1.

Fitting services end caps (QDT610)These are fitted after slim covers and secured byscrews through holes in the legs of the mouldingand through holes drilled 3mm and 8mm in fromthe end of both extension pieces.

Front cover trims (QDT665)These are asymmetrical and designed to be pushedonto one edge of a panel and only overlap theabutting panel. It is therefore best to fit the lockingside onto a panel more likely to require laterremoval; for example, to each end of the trunkingbedhead units or gas outlet covers.

Trim off this peice of mouldingwith a sharp pair of cutters toallow the horizontal trimextrusion (QDT619) to fit inplace.

Fitting front coversTo fit front covers, firstly load the lower edge dog-leg into the slot of the lower back extension (fig 2), holding thelower edge in position hinge the top edge down. This should tehn anable the cover to drop into an open position (fig3). The cover can then be closed by hinging the top edge upwards and inwards. Secure with the earthing screwsprovided (fig 4).

Fitting side covers (QDT619)To fit the side covers position the ‘J’ shapedleg of the cover onto the ball ended leg of theback extension and hinge the cover onto theback extrusion and clip into position.

Fitting full end caps (QDT609)This can be done after fitting the trunking tothe wall. when fitting near a return wall orsurface remember to allow enough room for ascrewdriver.

Page 11: QDT600 Trunking System Installation Manual - … · QDT Trunking Components The body and covers of the trunking are made from extruded aluminium with a creamy white semi-gloss finish

Fitting trim extrusion (QDT619)To prevent damage to the paint finish it is best to fit the trims after testing. To fit trims, place one edge into the gap between the front and sidecovers at the top, then working from one end press the trim in, graduallyworking it in along its length.

Removing trim extrusionThese trims have to be removed when access is necessary for servicepurposes. To do this either remove the top side cover, see page 8, or using astrong thin blade and some form of protection on the covers to protect thefinish, place the thin blade at one end of the trim resting it on a protectivecover, and lever it so that firstly one leg unlatches, then gradually workingalong its length to release the whole trim.

Buffer rail (QDT410, 211, 432)This is fixed to the front edge of the lower side cover. It has holesalong its length. Place it against the side cover 1mm in from thefront edge and mark the screw positions through these holes. Drillthe cover with a 3mm drill. Secure the rail with the self tappingscrews provided. When using rubber end stops, insert these bypushing them into the end of the buffer rail and folding them roundthe front. Cut main rubber insert to length and push it into placeusing a smear of liquid detergent to lubricate if necessary.

EarthingEarthing trunking (QDT638)Current I.E.E regulations require that accessible trunking is earthed via a flexiblecable. Trunking back, side cover units and end caps are fitted with earth terminalsor studs. An earth clamp is supplied as part of the kit, QDT638, for joining andearthing trunking body sections. This locates in a similar slot in both the trunkingbody and the side cover plates. The two smaller screws must be tightened up toprovide earth continuity. The third screw is for attaching a flexible earthing cablefrom the back cover to the body. These earth clamps can be used to bridge thejoint between trunking body parts. Cover plates are earthed using the specialscrews provided.

IMPORTANT: ENSURETHE EARTH CLAMPSARE FITTED IN THESLOT PROVIDED IN THETRUNKING BACKBEFORE FIXING TO THEWALL

Earthing side covers (DT638)Use the slot features of the extensions and theside covers, place the earth terminals providedin suitable position in either the upper or lowercable channels, connect these together usinga suitable flexible earthing link, then placecover (see p10), and snap into position.

Earthing all front coversThe screws provided have specialheads that remove the paint locally andprovide the necessary earth continuity.

Earthing back cover (QDT638)Use the slot features of the back and the back cover.Place the earth terminals provided in suitable positionsin either he upper or lower cable channels, connectthese together using a suitable flexible earthing link, then place cover (see p9), and snap into position.
