MPA ProgramNonprofit research2006 Needs Assessment Report

Began in 2006 MPA students met with nonprofit executive directors and board members in New Hanover, Brunswick and Pender to identify needs Needs assessment report indicated that nonprofits need help with: communication, staff and volunteer development, basic leadership, board member development, marketing and technology MPA professors joined with staff from Public Studies to plan QENO services based on needs assessment UNCW staff sought out qualified working and retired executives in the community to serve as consultants QENO applied for grant funding from secondary sources known for an interest in nonprofit development

More than 2,000 501(c)(3) organizations Sectors: Health, Human Services, Arts, Environmental, Educational Diverse funding & operational capability

Only work with 501c3 organizations Began working with three counties for needs assessment in 2006, but QENO plans to expand to work with a ten-county region: Brunswick, New Hanover, Pender, Onslow, Robeson, Columbus, Duplin, Bladen, Cumberland and Sampson Currently meeting with groups from these counties to identify unique service needs and resources available

[Our consultants & professors specialize in these areas] Capacity Building: helping nonprofit leaders identify the knowledge and resources needed to help their organization function effectively Strategic Planning: helping nonprofit leaders prepare for short-term and long-term growth and obstacles by introducing LOGIC model Human Resources Management: tips and guidelines for managing staff and volunteers, conflict resolution Board Governance: best practices for how to use and manage the board you have Financial Management: budgeting for the short-term and long-term Resource Development: fundraising, volunteer and staff recruitment, technical training, marketing

75 nonprofit representatives attended one of six QENO board governance training sessions

Workshops: Social Networking rating 4.7; (5 = Excellent) Reaching & Surpassing Goals Through Strategic Planning rating 4.8; Leadership Institute 4.96

Since June 2009, nonprofit executive directors have attended Roundtables, representing 60 organizations: participation has doubled to an average of 30
