Chapter : Whole Numbers

Natural numbers: The set of numbers starting from 1 are called natural numbers.

These numbers start from 1 and continue as 1,2,3,4….. There is no number preceding 1. Whole numbers

The set of numbers starting from 0 are called whole numbers. Here the numbers start from 0,1,2,3,4… Predecessor and successor

The number appearing before any given number is called it s predecessor. Eg, the predecessor of 234 is 233. Predecessor of 75008 is 75007.

Successor is the number which comes after a given number. Eg. The successor of 23098 is 23099 The successor of 10000 is 10001

Do the following questions in your notebook:

1. Write the successor for the following numbers: 23412 90000 230987

2. Write the predecessor of the following numbers: 90879 99999 902310

3. Do exercise 2.1 from NCERT maths book.

We will learn about the properties of whole numbers.

Properties of whole numbers:

Closure property

Commutative property

Associative property

Distributive property

We will learn two properties of whole numbers in this assignment.

Closure property: whole numbers are closed under addition and multiplication.

This means that if we add two whole numbers or multiply two whole numbers the answer

will always be a whole number.

If a and b are two whole numbers then a+b=c which will be a whole number.

Also, a x b= c which will be a whole number.

Page 3: QI. After reading the chapter answer the following ...

Eg, 23 and 45 are whole numbers.

23+45= 68

Here, 68 is also a whole number.

Similarly, 12 x 50= 600 which is a whole number.

Commutative property

If a and b are two whole numbers then,

a + b=b + a

a x b= b x a

suppose we take two whole numbers 12 and 9

12 +9 =21 9+12=21

Both the answers are same. So we can conclude that addition is commutative.

12 x 9= 108 9 x 12 = 108

Here as well both the answers are same. So we can conclude that multiplication is

commutative.

I. Solve the following questions in two ways. Are the answers same in both ways of

addition?

ii. 14+64

iii. 234+ 106

iv. 3453 +35698

v. 254+3259

II. Find the product by arranging the numbers in two ways. Are the answers same in

both ways of multiplication.

i. 53 x 5

ii. 245 x 15

iii. 21 x 35

iv. 125 x 8
