This, however, is not a normal year; our lives have been disrupted by a new coronavirus. Before COVID- 19, I was anticipating a very busy spring season, which included a visit from my daughter and grandchildren in March and a trip to northern California with my sister to visit our brother in April. Like all you you, I also have several quilting and sewing projects underway. The third installment of my Sue Spargo Block of the Month just arrived, and I still have a lot of embroidery to complete on the second block. Also, I am making two more Camden Bags for our CAQG Sew-Along, and I’ve bought fabric to make summer dresses for my four grand- daughters. When I thought about the family visits I had planned and the CAQG activities I was involved in, I wondered how I would have time for my projects. Needless to say, I am wondering no longer. With trips and activities cancelled for the foreseeable future, I now have plenty of time for sewing. Many of your lives have probably followed this same trajectory. Although it’s disappointing to have all those activities and get togethers cancelled, I doubt that any of us will be wandering around our homes with nothing to do. Quilting is a creative and intellectual pastime with which we occupy our hands and our minds. Through the internet we can stay in touch with family and friends, and perhaps work on some of those Blueprint classes we’ve had in our libraries. Of course, we will miss seeing each other! The highlight of any CAQG meeting is usually the Show & Tell, but we can still share our projects through the CAQG FaceBook page. To post on the site simply e-mail a picture with a caption to Jacki Vawter- [email protected]. That way we can stay connected with our quilting friends during this stressful time. Thanks to Alda for consolidating and clarifying information about making face masks. And thanks to Gloria Bowers ([email protected]), who has kindly agreed to be the contact person for the effort to provide OR caps to UVA. By now you all should have received e-mails from Alda with links to patterns and resources. Please note that these efforts are voluntary and individual. Production of masks and caps is not a CAQG project, and our guild is not being contracted to make these items. That being said, I applaud all of our members who have been working on masks and caps for local health facilities. Good work, ladies! Moira MacAvoy CAQG President

President’s Message

“Quilting in the Time of Coronavirus”

In a normal year this message would be about all the fun guild activities we have planned as we look forward to Spring. This, however, is not a normal year; our lives have been disrupted by a new coronavirus. Before COVID-19, I was anticipating a very busy spring season, which included a visit from my daughter and grandchildren in March and a trip to northern California with my sister to visit our brother in April. Like all you you, I also have several quilting and sewing projects underway. The third installment of my Sue Spargo Block of the Month just arrived, and I still have a lot of embroidery to complete on the second block. Also, I am making two more Camden Bags for our CAQG Sew-Along, and I’ve bought fabric to make summer dresses for my four grand-daughters. Chapter News

Crozet Quilters – Adrienne Granitz – The last few months had been devoted to preparing for Spring Fest and all the activities that go along with that. Now that it has been cancelled, we are working with the Moonlighters to have a Spring/Fall Fest in November if the virus has cleared by then. We have offered our speaker and the favors that are already made and even our idea for the raffle. We will work with Moonlighters in presenting this combined Fest. We grieved with the Trafton family at the loss of Barbara in January. We were just beginning to know her and appreciating her many quilting skills. We have 3 new members since our last newsletter, Amy Stromberg, Deborah Belissa, and Diane Swett. We look forward to getting back to meeting again when it is safe and getting to know our new members. Several of the Crozet group are making masks and just delivered 54! Moonlighters – Melinda Smith –We have issued a Remembering Challenge and hope you will join us. We will share these quilts at Fall Fest. Moonlighters had a Scrap Swap for our 5th Wednesday January meeting. We swapped scraps and shared ideas for making Bright Star quilts. Many of our members have already made Bright Star Quilts from the scraps swapped. The fun continues with a color themed scrap swap at each meeting. We also welcomed a new member, Polly Sager. Due to Spring Fest’s cancellation the Crozet chapter offered us their speaker, Penni Domikis, of Cabin in the Woods ( https://cabininthewoodsquilters.com/) and she is very grateful that we've been willing to engage her for our Fall Fest during this time of event cancellations. Penni has developed a talk specifically for our guild, “The Fine Art of Fabric”. Additionally, the Crozet chapter will work with Moonlighters to incorporate some of their Spring Fest activity with our Fall Fest. The Crozet chapter has made 70 favors and I shared our favor idea. I don't think any of the attendees will be upset with 2 favors! This joint venture should be fun. Nelson Quilters – Debbie Speilman – During our January 20th meeting we had the reveal for a Round Robin project that 10 members have been participating in for several months. Our group also donated 5 quilts to 2 families that lost their home to fire. Work for a quilt of valor has been started. All blocks are completed, and Barbara Tinsley sewed them together. When we meet again, we will complete the quilt top with borders. In addition, we have started a quilt to be raffled by one of our local Relay for Life teams. The fabric has been selected, but the project is on hold until we can meet again and know whether the Relay for Life event will take place. In February, we began "Techniques Block of the Month" demonstrations by Doris Delk. Our first block was the uneven nine-patch. Our group continues to enjoy the "Meet the Quilter" presentations on a monthly basis. For now, we do not plan to meet again until at least June. Our policy is: if schools are closed we do not meet. In other words, our meetings and projects will resume when the Governor announces it is safe. Tuesday Morning – Corinne Conlon – Four of our members, Robin Hamill-Ruth, Kirsten Niemann, Ann Robertson and Jane Fellows shared the judges' critiques of their quilts that were displayed at the most recent Houston Quilt Show. It was very informative and we appreciated them sharing this feedback. We chose a challenge for 2020 that will be displayed at fall fest. Details can be found on the guild's website (caqg.weebly.com) under Challenges: 2020 Westminster-Canterbury will have a display of Bright Stars quilts in May. During one of our meetings we had a sew along where we attached temporary sleeves on these quilts. It was fun and we got to see about 20 Bright Stars quilts at once.

Bright Star Quilts

This is the time of year when the majority of the Bright Star Quilts are made. The goal of 162 quilts remains the same as last year. These quilts are delivered to six schools for nine classes, two of the classes are at Clark School in the city. The County schools are Stone Robinson, one class, Red Hill, one class, Scottsville, one class, Woodbrook, two classes and Cale School, two classes. We have collected about half of the needed quilts at this time. There is a small collection of children’s books that are available, if you don’t have just the right book to put with the quilt. The quilts and books are delivered to the schools in July/August, before the school year begins. Westminster Canterbury will feature the Bright Star Quilts in their gallery for the month of May. Open to the public. Karen Horridge Community Quilts

CAQG Website

Website Update Suggestions about the website are welcome anytime. The practice of social distancing (which I call hermitting) is even giving me extra time to play with web design and content. One thing I would like to do is add a section highlighting the talents of our members. If you have a quilt accepted to a show, or will have something on display somewhere, please let me know. If you have a photo to go with the news, even better! Send me comments or news at [email protected]. Jean Lightner-Norum Webmaster, CAQG

Chapter Challenges

Challenge quilts due by Fall Fest Remembering: A challenge issued by Moonlighters to be shown at Fall Fest. Create a quilt with the theme of Remembering. The books Moonwalking With Einstein by Joshua Foer and The Secret Life of the Grown-Up Brain by Barbara Strauch provided food for thought. The word "Remembering" is just the starting point for your idea. It could be a trick for remembering like Mnemonics, using rhymes, making lists or a particular memory. For more ideas for this challenge visit caqg.weebly.com and at top of the page go to the “MORE” drop down menu and then select “Challenge-Remembering”. Finished quilt size perimeter maximum 120 inches, any shape, color, or technique and individual or team made. 2020 Challenge: Tuesday Morning has issued the 2020 challenge that will be displayed at Fall Fest 2020. Create a quilt that is 20" x 20" and has 20 blocks, shapes, appliques or embellishments. The possibilities are endless! How about 20 mini log cabin blocks, with added pride if you can do each block with 20 pieces. How about simple but elegant--5 squares by 4 squares in sizes to equal 20" x 20"; bonus points for making the blocks slightly different sizes but still coming out to 20" x 20. For more ideas go to caqg.weebly.com, select “MORE” then “Challenge-2020”

Workshops 2020 Fall Workshop Our Fall workshops will be given by Bonnie Hunter on October 5 and 6 at Ivy Creek. The workshop will feature projects from her newest book, String Frenzy. For anyone wondering how to take all those odds and ends from your stash and turn them into a quilt, these workshops are the perfect chance. Bonnie Hunter will share her successful methods for pulling together a wide variety of fabrics into a beautiful finished product. One project will be a two-color quilt, and the other will have neutrals combined with multiple colors. Preliminary information is on our website (caqg.weebly.com ) already, and details will follow as the dates draw closer. Questions? Contact Program Chair Ginger Mirenda: [email protected]

Mini Workshops Mona Houle will be teaching a workshop on silk ribbon embroidery. Many of our members have asked for a class on this topic, and we are so fortunate that Mona will share some of her beautiful techniques with us.

A group quilt to be donated to Ivy Creek UMC will be cut and assembled at a workshop this summer. We will all make the same large block. This will be suitable for quilters of all levels. We will teach how to make accurate squares by starting with larger strips and how to “spin” a seam.

Normally we have a spring workshop “mini retreat” where many members work on Bright Star quilts or finish UFOs. This spring, we are all hunkered down at home, and we encourage you to work on those projects and take photos so that we can share them online or when we are able to get together again.

And finally, we always like to have a late fall workshop with a holiday theme. Look for updates in your inbox and on the website.

Ellen MacAvoy and Moira MacAvoy The Mini Workshop Committee
