Central Aortic Systolic Pressure (CASP) is the pressure at the root of the aorta as it emerges from the heart. Recent studies show CASP is the strongest indicator for strokes and heart attacks. Do something about your health and blood pressure today, don’t let the silent killer sneak up on you.

DAILY ESSENTIALE-MAILHabits
Email can be a great tool, and email can be a tool for procrastination or overwhelm. It’s not email itself that decides, it’s how you use it.
Over time, I’ve developed a set of habits that work for me, helping me to keep email minimal and productive and still be able to focus on more important work. I can honestly say that at least once a day, my inbox is empty, and that’s a nice feeling.
I offer them here not to say that these are the email habits you should follow, but to show one person’s way of doing things.
TEXT: LEO BABAUTAIMAGES: STOCK XCHNG
I don’t keep email open all day, nor do I open it frequently. I have come to peace with the idea that I can let email pile up to 20-30 messages and my world won’t collapse, nor will it be difficult to process to empty. Note that I call it “email processing time”, not “email reading time” — I open my email and process to empty, instead of just reading things and leaving them in the inbox.
When I open an email, I make a quick decision: delete/archive, act now (if it takes a minute or two) and then reply/archive, send a quick reply (and then archive), add to my todo list to do later (and star and then archive). In none of those cases is the email left sitting in the inbox.
One of my best habits is to open up my calendar immediately whenever there’s a date from an email that I need to remember. If someone wants to meet or Skype or do a workout, it goes on the calendar. If I need to follow up on something next week, it goes on the calendar.
Learning them helps you quickly process your inbox from top to bottom.
When an email appears in my inbox that I don’t need to see, and it’s likely that it will happen again, I will hit “unsubscribe”, or immediately create a filter so it won’t come into my inbox again.
I usually reply with 1-3 sentences. It’s rare that I will send a message longer than 5 sentences, and if I do, I have to really justify it to myself. If something needs to be written in longer form, I’d prefer to open a new Google Doc, write it up, and share it with the person (docs are better for sharing, collaborating, editing, reading). Keeping emails short means it’s quick to reply, and the other person doesn’t have to wade through an essay to get the key information.
Limited email processing times.
Take action.
Keep emails short.
Keyboard shortcuts.
Filter ruthlessly.
Immediately add things to the calendar.

ENTERING THE MIND OF A
MagicianLike many other professions, being a magician, as fun and effortless
as it seems, is no easy task.
Apart from the great deal of planning, practising and preparation
involved, a magician also has to constantly outdo himself and fight
his inner demons.
Jeff Leong, an International Illusionist and Magician from Malaysia,
came across magic by chance in his teenage years. Embarking on this
magical journey has opened up new opportunities and changed his
life ever since. We met up with him recently to find out more about
life as a magician... TEXT: EILEEN & DESPHOTOS PROVIDED BY JEFF LEONG
How did you end up as a magician?
I think it had a lot to do with fate. It is a great career to have, as you can make a living by providing entertainment and laughters to the audience.
I firmly believe that, failing to bring delight to the audience as a magician is a sign of his incompetence.
That said, I truly enjoy performing on stage and creating joy for everyone.
What is the greatest influence in your life so far?
My parents.
I was 19 when I entered this industry, and they were initially against it. As time went by, my persistence to continue in this career eventually gained their support and admiration. Now, my family cannot be more proud of me.
Obstacles. How do you deal with them?
I am quite a perfectionist in nature. Whenever I come across any failures along the way, I would naturally feel disappointed. I would then choose to remain calm and silent, perhaps go for a basketball game or play some video games to relieve some stress. All these help me to get myself back up on my
feet to continue tackling the challenges I face.
How was it like performing with others?
It is all about teamwork, and coordination with others. This is especially true when I work with my assistants and audio engineers, where any minor hiccups in the process can potentially jeopardise the entire performance.
If you aren’t a magician today, who do you think you would want to be?
I guess I might go for a job in the finance industry, perhaps banking or accounting related?

Nothing great was ever created by waiting around for someone to tell you it’s all going to be okay or for perfect information to drop from the sky. Doesn’t happen that way. Great work requires you to act in the face of uncertainty, to live in the question long enough for your true potential to emerge. There is no alternative.
When you find the strength to act in the face of uncertainty, you till the soil of genius.Problem is, that kills most people. It leads to unease, anxiety, fear and doubt on a level that snuffs out most genuinely meaningful and potentially revolutionary endeavors before they even
see the light of day. Not because they wouldn’t have succeeded, but because you never equipped yourself to handle and even harness the emotional energy of the journey.
But, what if it didn’t have to be that way?
What if there was a way to turn the fear, anxiety and self-doubt that rides along with acting in the face of uncertainty–the head-to-toe butterflies–into fuel for brilliance?
Turns out, there is. Your ability to lean into the unknown isn’t so much about luck or genetics, rather it’s something
entirely trainable. I’ve spent the past few years interviewing world-class creators across a wide range of fields and pouring over research that spans neuroscience, decision-theory, psychology, creativity and business.
Through this work, a collection of patterns, practices and strategies have emerged that not only turbocharge insight, creativity, innovation and problem-solving, but also help ameliorate so much of the suffering so often associated with the pursuit of any creative quest.
Here are 5 starter-strategies to help get you going:
Uncertainty. It’s a terrifying word.
We live in a time where the world is in a state of constant, long-term flux. And, that’s not all. If you want to spend your time on the planet not just getting-by, but consistently creating art, experiences, businesses and lives that truly matter, you’ll need to proactively seek out, invite and even deliberately amplify uncertainty. Because the other side of
uncertainty is opportunity.

1. Reframe. We tell ourselves stories all day long. I’m skinny. I’m fat. I’m talented. I’m stupid. I will succeed. I will fail. It turns out, the storylines we create around a particular circumstance are far more determinative of success than the circumstance itself. They affect not only our willingness to act, but the quality of our ideas and solutions.
Unfortunately, our brains have a strong bias toward negativity, leading most of us to create stories around circumstances that require action in the face of uncertainty that are more likely to paralyze and stunt creativity than fuel action.
Reframing is a process that asks you to suspend negative storylines, explore if the story you’re telling is the only one and, if not (which is inevitably the case), construct or frame a new storyline that empowers you to experience an uncertain circumstance not as a prime for failure and inaction, but as a signpost for meaning and opportunity.
For example, if you’re disabling storyline is around the risk of failure, instead of just asking “what if I fail?” and creating a doomsday scenario, you also ask “how will I recover, what if I do nothing and what if I succeed?” Then build new stories around those questions.
2. Practice Mindfulness.Another important point is the ability to pull back and
see what’s really going on, re-center, then breath into that uncomfortable place long enough for amazing things to bubble up. A daily mindfulness practice goes a long way toward equipping you to do just that.
It cultivates the sense of persistent grounding that makes living and acting in a world where there is no new normal far more enjoyable. And it trains you in the practice of dropping thoughts, among those, destructive, limiting-beliefs.
3. Exercise Your Brain.Daily cardiovascular exercise, especially with high-intensity bursts mixed in can improve mood, executive function, decision-making and creativity and decrease anxiety and fear. It’s also strongly correlated with decreases in anxiety and increases in mood, which are directly connected to improved creativity and problem-solving.
4. Singletask.Multitasking is out. Turns out this badge of honor from the ’90s is more fiction than fact. Our brains don’t multitask, they just rapidly switch between tasks, sometimes fast enough for us to believe we’re doing many things at once. Problem is, every time we switch, there is a “ramping cost” in your
brain, it takes anywhere from a few second to 15 minutes for your brain to fully re-engage. This makes you feel insanely busy, but simultaneously craters productivity, creativity and increases feelings of anxiety and stress.
Simple solution–just say no. Do one thing at a time in intense, short bursts.
5. Get Lean.Instead of creating in a vacuum, explore the possibility of bringing a “lean” or “agile” approach to your creative process. Focus on maximum learning, create the simplest version of your idea possible, then bring a select group of those who’d potentially enjoy it into the process earlier in name of soliciting and integrating input into the next iteration. This not only minimizes waste, it changes the psychology of creation by adding more certainty earlier in the game and encouraging consistent, incremental action.
These five strategies and practices can change the way you experience the creative process in a profound way. They’ll not only allow you to tap a reservoir of previously hidden creativity, they’ll also allow you to experience any creative endeavor with a far deeper sense of equanimity and joy.

Discomfort Zone:How to Master the Universe
Of all the skills I’ve learned in the past 7 years of changing my life, one skill stands out:Learning to be comfortable with discomfort.
If you learn this skill, you can master pretty much anything. You can beat procrastination, start exercising, make your diet healthier, learn a new language, make it through challenges and physically grueling events, explore new things, speak on a stage, let go of all that you know, and become a minimalist. And that’s just the start.
Unfortunately, most people avoid discomfort. I mean, they really avoid it — at the first sign of discomfort, they’ll run as fast as possible in the other direction. This is perhaps the biggest limiting factor for most people, and it’s why you can’t change your habits.
Think about this: many people don’t eat vegetables because they don’t like the taste. We’re not talking about soul-wrenching pain here, not Guantanamo torture, but a taste that’s just not something you’re used to. And so they eat what they already like, which is sweets and fried stuff and meats and cheeses and salty things and lots of processed flour.
The simple act of learning to get used to something that tastes different — not really that hard in the grand scheme of life — makes people unhealthy, often overweight.
I know, because this was me for so many years. I became fat and sedentary and a smoker and deeply in debt with lots of clutter and procrastination, because I didn’t like things that were uncomfortable. And so I
created a life that was deeply uncomfortable as a result.
The beautiful thing is: I learned that a little discomfort isn’t a bad thing. In fact, it can be something you enjoy, with a little training. When I learned this, I was able to change everything, and am still pretty good at changing because of this one skill.
Master your fear of discomfort, and you can master the universe.
The way to master discomfort is to do it comfortably. That might sound contradictory, but it’s not. If you are afraid of discomfort, and you try to beat discomfort with a really gruelling activity, you will probably give up and fail, and go back to comfort.
So do it in small doses.

livingPick something that’s not hard. Take meditation as an example. It’s not really that hard — you just sit down and pay attention to your body and breath, in the present moment. You don’t have to empty your mind (just notice your thoughts), you don’t have to chant anything weird, you just sit and pay attention. If you don’t like meditation, try a new healthy food, like kale or raw almonds or quinoa. Or a fairly easy exercise if you’re sedentary, like walking or jogging.
Just do a little. You don’t have to start by doing 30 minutes of something you’re not used to doing. Just do a few minutes. Just start.
Push out of your comfort zone, a little. My friend and Zen priest
Susan O’Connell has a favorite meditation instruction that you can use for any activity actually: when you’re meditating and you feel like getting up, don’t; then when you feel the urge to get up a second time, don’t; and when you feel the urge to get up a third time, then get up. So you sit through the urge, the discomfort, twice before finally giving in the third time. This is a nice balance, so that you’re pushing your comfort zone a little. You can do this in exercise and many other activities — push a little.
Watch the discomfort. Watch yourself as you get a bit uncomfortable — are you starting to complain (internally)? Are you looking for ways to avoid it? Where do you turn to? What happens if
you stay with it, and don’t do anything?
Smile. This is not trivial advice. If you can smile while being uncomfortable, you can learn to be happy with discomfort, with practice.-------------------------------------Repeat this practice daily. It will be strange, perhaps difficult, at first, but soon your comfort zone will expand. If you practice it enough, with different activities, your comfort zone will expand to include discomfort. And then you can master the universe.

The New Rules of
FITNESSWe’ve entered 2013, and yet most of us think of exercise like it’s 1991. Let’s toss out the old and welcome the new.
The old: long sessions of jogging, or marathon sessions on the elliptical machine or treadmill, or working every bodypart individually on a dozen different weight machines and dumbbell stations, doing circuits in a women-oriented fitness center, taking dance-aerobic or kickboxing-aerobic classes.
There’s nothing wrong with all that, but it’s not how we live today. Today, we live online, in a world of Facebook and Twitter and Instagram and Pinterest, of Gmail and iPhones. The way we live and think online isn’t at all how we think about fitness.
Let’s take a cue from how we actually live and think today, and change up fitness.
In the world of tweets and SMS, long classess or gym workouts just don’t seem to fit. We don’t have time for all of that. So toss out the workout, and instead think of fitness as small as a tweet. Sprint up a hill after getting off the train. Sprint up the stairs as you enter the office. Do some squats after sitting for 30 minutes. Let’s call it a fitness bit instead of a workout.
We rarely do anything online or offline without sharing it, or collaborating with others. So share your fitness bits, or do them with others.
Share your best methods and learn from each other. Find a good way, like open-source software has, to collaborate and improve fitness methods.
Remove anything that keeps you from doing a fitness bit, remove any heavy stuff that slows you down before exercise. What are some of the barriers? Having to go to a gym, sign up for a class, get some clothes or equipment.
These days, the best services allow you to export your data anytime you want, and you can take that data anywhere you want. Do the same for exercise. Just do it wherever you are.
Everything out there in the cloud these days is not just on one server but distributed across many. Do bits of exercise through-out the day, distributed among all the other little tasks you’re doing. Do some yoga sun salutations in the morning, a bit of sprinting on the way to work, etc. It breaks up all the sitting you usually do, which is a good thing.
Why is fitness so boring to so many people? They’re doing it wrong. It’s fun as hell. If you’ve been doing exercise you hate, find something funner: a sport, playing with your kids, running with a good friend.
