PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

What is assessment?

“Assessment is the process of identifying, gathering and interpreting information about a student’s learning. The purpose of assessment is to provide information on student achievement and progress.” - Principles for assessment and reporting in NSW schools, 1996

The Record of School Achievement requires you to complete the following:

a) follow the course developed by the Board of Studies b) apply yourself with diligence and sustained effort to the set tasks and experiences c) achieve some or all of the course outcomes

Information to Students Regarding Assessment Tasks

Myth: It does not matter if you do not do an assessment task. Reality: It is a compulsory requirement that you attempt all tasks. If you fail to complete tasks that add up to 50% or more of your assessment mark total, you automatically fail the course. Myth: If you fail to complete an assessment task, then you can provide a note and this is enough to have the task rescheduled. Reality: You have to submit a misadventure form to the principal in order to have a task rescheduled. Myth: If you do all of your assessment tasks then you cannot be N-Determination for the course. Reality: There are two main ways to be N-Awarded for a course.

1. Failing to complete assessment tasks that add up to 50% or more of your assessment marks. 2. For example, if you had four assessment tasks, one worth 10%, two worth 15% each, and a

fourth worth 60% and you fail to complete the fourth task, you would automatically fail. Failure to attend class, or to do classwork can lead to an N determination in the subject. Attendance in class has an approximate benchmark of 85% and this must be achieved unless there is a documented reason for not doing so. Myth: If I attempt the task, or just turn up when the task is being done and only receive 1% or 2% I still can say that I attempted the task. Reality: You must make a serious effort or the task will be considered non-serious and you will need to attempt it again.

MISADVENTURE What Happens If I Was Sick Or Unable To Complete An Assessment Task?

You will need to submit a completed misadventure form to your teacher on the first day you are back at school e.g. the assessment task was due on Friday but you were sick. You return to school on Monday. The form should be submitted on Monday. The student must be ready to complete/submit the assessment on the first day of return to school.

QHHS ASSESSMENT POLICY Rationale:

• Quakers Hill High School Assessment policy is consistent with the Education Act and Board of Studies syllabuses and credentialing requirements. It emphasises the interactions between learning and manageable assessment strategies that promote learning

• reflects a view of learning in which assessment helps students learn better, rather than just achieve a better mark

• provides ways for students to use feedback from assessment to inform learning • assists students to take responsibility for their own learning • offers differentiated assessment that is inclusive of all learners • provides parents/caregivers with formally written reports twice per year

The School’s Role:

• ensure that teaching programs will indicate the outcomes being addressed, the teaching activities planned and the intended assessment strategies

• provide student entries and assessment details to NESA • assessment is planned so that students can demonstrate achievement of outcomes for the

relevant stage of learning • students informed of assessment tasks and timeframes • teachers will collect and record assessment information to guide ongoing teaching and

learning, monitor and evaluate student progress • provide parents/caregivers with formal and informal opportunities to receive information

about and discuss their child’s learning • will disseminate to caregivers the reports from state-wide and national testing programs

The Student’s Role:

• make a serious attempt at all assessment tasks, meeting timelines • reflect on personal performance on each assessment task • reflect teacher feedback for future development

The Staff Role:

• ensure students are aware of NESA requirements applicable to their subject • evaluate student progress and regularly communicate areas of strength and opportunities

for improvement to individual learners • utilise formally and externally generated assessment data to inform programming and lesson

delivery • provide information to parents that include students, strengths and directions for future

development on a formal and informal basis The Community / Caregiver / Welfare Team / LST / Year Advisers Role:

• To assemble and provide appropriate information to agencies supporting students at risk Evaluation:

• To be ongoing by the Executive Team

HOW TO DO AN ASSESSMENT TASK

What do I have to do? • Read the question. • Circle anything you don’t understand. • Underline key words. • Ask questions of your teacher. • What type of data do I need to collect? • Create a check list of things you need to do. REFER back to this frequently. • Create a research table or scaffold to collect information.

When does it have to be finished by?

• Use a diary OR write a reminder note. • Estimate how long it will take to gather the information.

Where can I get the information?

• Homework club - access to the internet/teachers are there as tutors. • Library - books/newspapers. • Electronic - internet. • Do I have to prepare a survey and gather the information that way? • Ensure the authority and reliability of online sources, avoiding self-authoring sites and/or

wikis and blogs as reference sources.

How do I write/record the data/information? • Only write down the important points which relate to your question. • Use your scaffold or research table. • Record the details of every source: people (interview or survey), websites, books (name,

author, publisher, date of publication, page number). This is for your bibliography BUT also great for quick rechecking.

How do I start the actual writing of the task?

• Go back to the question/task and make a brief writing plan. • Write a short section at a time. • Go straight into the information. • Write the introduction and conclusion last.

Stuck/Help?

• Take all the information you have gathered and your questions to your teacher, the faculty Head Teacher or the Librarian.

Student does not complete or submit task on the due date but has a medical certificate or other appropriate supporting, documentation. Student is required to complete/submit task on return to school. Completes and submits a misadventure form to relevant Head Teacher. If student suspended –complete/submit task upon return

Student fails to submit or complete task or makes a non-serious attempt* on the day. A zero is given, 1st N determination warning letter issued. Student is still required to complete and submit task to the teacher by the revised date.
