Quality control is a part of a quality assuranceprogram. It checks whether the qualityassurance program is effective in ensuring the
safety of blood and the recipient. Qualitycontrol is therefore an inspection system usedto ensure that specifications are met and thatmistakes have not occured. Quality control
consists of two programs.1.Internal quality control.2.External quality control.

Internal quality control programprimarily checks the precision of thework. It is based on monitoring various
aspects of the tests performed in thelaboratory. It includes testing of controlsera , repeated testing of routinesamples. Internal quality control is
intended to ensure that there iscontinual evaluation of the reliabilityof the work of the laboratory andcontrol is exercised over the release oftest result.

External quality control is the
objective evaluation by anoutside agency and primarilychecks the accuracy of the
work.

Ensuring safe blood component requires
applying the principles of quality
assurance to all aspect of componentcollection , preparations , testing , storage
and transport.
Staff must be trained and their
competency evaluated. The contents of
final product should be periodically
assessed to make sure that they meet
expectations.

Refrigerators, freezers, and chambers have
built-in temperature monitoring sensors.< When recording charts or tapes are changed, they should be dated.< A chart with a perfect circle tracing may
indicate that the recorder is not functioningproperly.< Alarm signals will activate at a temperaturethat allows personnel to take proper action
before blood reaches desirable temperature.

Visual thermometers in blood storageequipment provide ongoing verificationof temperature accuracy.
Thermometer calibration is done by
bio-medical department on quarterlybases.
