Fountain Chemicals CC was established in 1990
in Fountain Road, Eastleigh, Edenvale (hence the
name Fountain Chemicals). Initial production was
household detergents but this soon changed to
include agricultural chemicals and after about two
years Fountain Chemicals became a toll formulator
of agricultural chemicals only, primarily for crop
protection but also for animal health and public
health products.
In 2010 a new era started for Fountain Chemicals
(Pty) Ltd when it joined the Villa Crop Protection/
Exportos group as a toll formulation facility for the
group, but also for other interested parties. In the
same year the operations of Fountain Chemicals was
relocated to Clayville in Olifantsfontein.
The facilities at Fountain Chemicals have been
continuously upgraded over the past few years to
turn it into the world class formulation facility it
is today. Upgrades include increased formulation
capacity, automated filling lines and a Wettable
Powder Plant.
With a staff complement of 60 people, Fountain
Chemicals is pursuing training actively and
all staff are regularly trained
in-house and externally.

Fountain Chemicals is a formulation facility,
meeting ISO and international standards, focussed
on the formulation of high quality Crop Protection,
Animal Health and Public Health products.

CAPABILITIES OF FOUNTAIN CHEMICALS
Fountain Chemicals toll formulates liquid products
and powders primarily for the crop protection
industry, but also for the animal health and public
health industries.
The range of products includes herbicides,
insecticides, fungicides, adjuvants, dips, pour-on
products and aerosol concentrates. Future projects
include the formulation of drenches for animal
health and foliar feeds for crop protection.
The plant is split into two distinct areas, one for
herbicides only, the other for insecticides, fungicides
etc.
Fountain chemicals also offers a repacking service,
repacking from bulk (or producing directly) in small
packs ranging from 100ml to large packs
of 200 litre.

SERVICES OFFERED TO CUSTOMERS
Product Formulation DevelopmentA product formulation development service is available to clients that make use of the Fountain Chemicals manufacturing facilities. Prospective clients are requested to source their own active ingredients. However, assistance can be provided with this. Whilst field trials of new formulations are not carried out by Fountain Chemicals all required physical and chemical properties can be determined in our laboratory. Fountain Chemicals is also currently establishing a pilot formulation facility that can test potential new developments or produce up to 500L of product for field trials.
Quality assurance is carried out on all incoming technical material and finished products in our in-house laboratory. The range of analytical equipment includes gas chromatographs. High Performance Liquid Chromatograph (HPLC), Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) and UV/VIS spectrophotometer.Specific gravity, product suspensibility and suspension stability, solution pH, viscosity and particle size (for SC formulations and WP production) can also be determined. The Fountain Chemicals laboratory is for internal analytical services only and is not an external commercial analytical laboratory service.
Toll Manufacturing Various options are available for toll manufacturing at Fountain Chemicals. Potential clients are requested to supply their own active ingredients and labels. All required solvents, emulsifiers etc. and all packaging material can be sourced and procured by Fountain Chemicals or the client can supply all the necessary input material, in which case only a toll manufacturing fee is charged. All Fountain Chemicals prices are ex-factory and do not include transport of clients materials to and from the factory site. Whilst we are not involved in transportation of hazardous goods we can assist with locating competent and certified transporters.
WarehousingFountain Chemicals can also offer limited free warehousing to clients making use of our toll manufacturing facilities. The typical arrangement is for warehousing of all material for one month prior to commencement of production and for finished product to be removed from site by latest one month after manufacture. Alternative warehousing arrangements can be made by prior arrangement.
The facilities at Fountain Chemicals have been built to conform to ISO specifications pertaining to production management, product quality control and environmental safety. Fountain Chemicals also embarked on the implementation of an accredited Integrated Management System (ISO 9001: 2008; ISO 14001:2004; OHSAS 18001:2007), which will further distinguish them from other formulation facilities in South Africa.
ROAD AHEAD
The aim is to provide high levels of service excellence and satisfaction to all customers utilising the toll manufacturing facilities at Fountain Chemicals and therefore, Fountain Chemicals is continuously improving their facilities and capabilities.
Upcoming projects include:- Further improving product development
capabilities in the laboratory. - The pilot development plant for field trial batches
of up to 500l.- Improving warehouse capabilities by building a
new warehouse in 2015, followed by another new warehouse on 2016. (Total +9 000 m2)
- Installing semi-automated labelling machines.
