TEN TOP REASONS TO SHOP IN
QUAMBATOOK
1. Local stores are more likely to carry locally produced foods which sup-port local agriculture. (fruit & vegies from Swan Hill, meat from Kerang)
2. Local businesses contribute more to
local groups & events. 3. Local shops create more jobs lo-
cally. 4. Shopping locally reduces my carbon
footprint. 5. Local businesses support other lo-
cal businesses. 6. Local businesses provide services &
assistance not found in bigger cen-tres.
7. Local businesses contribute to com-
munity well being. 8. Shopping locally saves time, energy
& fuel. 9. Keeps our town alive. 10. My hometown is more important
than a pair of cheap undies.
Pete Schlitz welcomed a good representation of the
community on Monday night. He explained that the
committee and the club had got smaller over the
last few years which made it difficult to field a
team in the local competition and to function as a
club. The club wanted feedback as to the future di-
rection of tennis in Quambatook.
Greg Currie of Northern District Community
Health Service said Quambatook was not the only
club to experience difficulties getting players and
committee members. It was also happening in other
towns including clubs in Melbourne He attributed
causes in our area to the declining and aging of the
population and also the impact of the prolonged dry
conditions which have been experienced.
Greg spoke of the importance of sporting clubs to a
community contributing to the health and wellbeing
of the community.
Discussion followed which included:
The benefits of the tennis club in Quambatook
•It has a strong family focus
•It is a great place for social interaction
•It is a good way to meet people
•The annual Labour Tournament benefits the
town
•Exercise for physical and mental health
It was agreed that if the tennis club did not continue
it would be very difficult to regain. Impacts would
include people going out of town for their sport
which has a flow on effect to businesses in town.
The committee was encouraged to retain the club
and facilities which are envied by other clubs.
Those at the meeting supported a focus on social
tennis at a local level on a Friday evening in prefer-
ence to trying to field a team for Saturday competi-
tion. It would include:
• Social tennis evening
• Dining
• Opportunity for coaching and development of
skills for children
• Non tennis playing parents/guardians involved in
the evening
Labour Day Tennis Tournament
•Utilise the offer of assistance both financially and
organising from Labour Day players who love ‘the
Quambatook experience’ of the weekend and play-
ing on grass courts.
•Run it as a town event and have a committee from
the community and Labour Day players to organ-
ise the event
Maintaining Nine Grass Tennis Courts
• Consider reducing the number of courts for play-
ing season, maintain the rest of the courts at a
minimum level until preparation for Tennis tour-
nament
• Explore hard court options
• and multi purpose use
Quambatook Lawn Tennis Club Community Forum Membership
• Has to be affordable to the community but also
cover the costs of running a club which in-
cludes a membership to VCTA for insurance
cost
• Show breakdown of the costs involved in the
membership so people can understand costs
associated
• Offer membership to supporters of the club, eg
past members of the club who no longer play
and/or have moved away from Quambatook
Utilise the courts for other purposes – eg. Cricket
games, social events

would like to join the committee please contact

Shirley and Keith Williamson of Moree send greetings to their friends in Quambatook and dis-trict. Having recently celebrated their 66th wed-ding anniversary, Shirley and Keith are now awaiting a place in “Fairview” where they hope to spend many happy years. They were very happy to have home for a short visit, their three sons John, William and Peter. Keith is looking forward to his 90th birthday next Feb.
