It was a warm June morning at the 2009Quad City Air Show in eastern Iowa. Thesky was a brilliant blue, with wisps of

white clouds on the horizon. The aroma of high-octane airplane fuel was in the air, along

with the menacing growl of a World War IIU.S. Navy TBM Avenger as it flew down theflight line.

My lifelong pal, Al Stamberg, and I werecelebrating a friendship that had begun when

we were boys during the mid-1950s in south-

western Michigan. Our summers were a time of high adven-

ture in the decade following the end of World War II, fueled by television documentaries Victory at Seaand Crusade in the Pacific , inparticular movies and early histories thatbegan appearing in book shops and the local

library. It was a peaceful time for Tom BrokawsGreatest Generation. The war was seldommentioned in our homes, but an antiquetrunk tucked away in our basement was a

window into those years. It concealed a treas-ure trove for a curious boy: black-and-whitephotos from my fathers service in the Pacificaboard a 63-foot Army Air Force crash boat,

medals and ribbons, and, best of all, official AAF reports detailing actions of the P-399.

After meeting on the first day of fifthgrade, Al and I were inseparable, sharing acommon interest in the naval planes andships of the recent war. During summer vaca-tions, we spent many lazy, hazy days buildingaircraft and naval ship models. Over fifty years later, a brief whiff of model glue orpaint still sends me back to that innocenttime in our lives.

One afternoon a week during the summer, the public library bookmobile stopped at alocal elementary school. We pestered the staff until they allowed us to sign out war historiesand related picture books from the adultsection. This further inspired our interest innaval history.

On occasion, our family station wagon would pass an airport with an old warbirdparked on the runway, and dad would namethe plane and describe how it was used inthe war.

During that same period, Al and I becameaware of the Blue Angels, the U.S. Navysflight demonstration team (now a flightdemonstration squadron). By the early 1960s, the Blues were appearing in airshows in the region, but they were too faraway for us to travel by bike. So we looked atphotos and dreamed of seeing them fly inperson one day.

One late spring day, I had read in thenewspaper that the Blue Angels were sched-uled to fly at a festival on the Lake Michigan

shore at Benton Harbor, and would be basedat the Air National Guard base in nearby Battle Creek. On that Saturday morning, Istationed myself on the front lawn, hoping tocatch a glimpse of them en route to BentonHarbor. I was rewarded when I heard a faintroar of jet engines approaching. Looking sky-

ward, I spotted a loose formation of dark

Spring 1791 ... Though deeply dis-turbed by a terrible incident duringhis previous commission, JamesHayter is nevertheless on the verge of tak-ing command of HMS Sloop Eglantine asmaster and commander when personaltragedy shatters his life. The twin blowsconvince Hayter that he is not fit to com-mand and he must turn his back on the

sea forever. Even theintervention of his friendand former captain,

William Rennie, cannotdissuade him from aban-doning his duty.

This time the adventures of WilliamRennie and James Hayter take theyounger man ashore for much of thetime, testing him almost to the breakingpoint. Smalleys ability to engage the read-er is just as strong on land as it is at sea.He is a most powerful storyteller.

Under Smalleys pen, eighteenth centu-ry England, as well as life in the RoyalNavy, comes alive. And though Rennieand Hayter sail during the well-documented time of Nelson, the story-lines take a refreshing tack into uncharted

Nautical Fiction Niche When I set out to write these stories, I felt that the period often covere

nautical fiction the Napoleonic Wars had been so thoroughly canvassed by others that it would help me greatly to avoid it.

A ustralian-born author Peter Smalley has managed to carve oua unique and engaging niche in the nautical fiction genre forhis main characters, William Rennie and James Hayter, both

of the late eighteenth century Royal Navy. Once again sailiaboard the British frigate HMSExpedient , the duo returns this summerin The Gathering Storm, the fifth title in Smalleys naval adventure serie

The author discussed his approach tdeveloping the Rennie and Hayter sto-ries in this recent interview withQuarterdeck :

How have you managed to keep theplots fresh and out of the mainstream onautical f iction?

When I set out to write these storiesfelt that the period often covered by natical fiction the Napoleonic Wars had been so thoroughly canvassed by others that it would help me greatly toavoid it. Accordingly, I set the first boo

[HMS Expedient] well before, in 1786,and in each succeeding book in succeeing years 1787, 1788, and so on. Thetwo main characters could be sent any-

where in the world in their ship, HMSExpedient , on individual commissions that would never disturb historicfact. I was free to explore, imagine, invent virtually anything I liked provided it could plausibly take place aboard a 36-gun frigate, and in tplaces she visited. In The Gather ing St orm, y ou look into the personal world of JamesHay ter. How did you approach thissensitive task?

In earlier books, I had examined William Rennies life ashore his widowhood after a first short mar-riage, and his subsequent secondmarriage and I had also sketchedin various details of James Haytersdomestic life, but had not attemptedanything very ambitious. InThe Gathering Storm, I wanted to writenot just a good sea story, but a story

with real emotional depth. Life for

these men is not just lived dramati-cally afloat. It islived intensely sometimes evenmore intensely onland. The oldmaxim of the sailor Anything may happen at sea could equally apply

to life on land inthe eighteenth century. And in The Gathering Storm, James Hayterstroubled private world becomes astrong central strand of the story. Idont really want to give away any more than that.

Which of your characters have beenthe most dif f icult to write about?

I expect it depends on what difficultmeans. All my characters must bereal in their own way, in the sensethat they live and breathe. Are they troublesome to live with, so to say?Of course I like some of them morethan others, and a few of them notat all. Sir Robert Greer, the masterspy, is bluntly an arsehole. But

he is an intelligent, devious, schem-ing, ruthless arsehole, and therefore

wonderful to write. Dr Thomas Wing, Expedient s surgeon, is prick-ly, intuitive, and strong, and wary of

the worlds opinion because he is very small in stature. He is small inno other way, and I like him very much. Rennie can be perverse, andoccasionally irksome. Hayter can berash. They are human, and fallible.

How important is historical credibil-ity in creating engaging f iction?

What matters, I think, is to get the

background right. If my ship sails toa certain place in, say, 1789, I needto have a good general idea what theplace was like at that time. Thearchitecture, customs, dress howpeople lived, looked, and behaved.

As to the immediate, day-to-day,routine life of a ship of war of theeighteenth century Royal Navy, thatmust be as nearly correct in every detail as possible, so that readers feelthey are actually aboard the ship, sit-ting in the great cabin with CaptainRennie as he talks, sucks down amouthful of wine, and then is calledon deck, up into the smashing spray and the wind as the ship pitchescreaking and groaning through asudden trough.

Do y ou visit locations in which yostories take place?

I do sometimes visit locations, butnot always. Last year I went with m

wife to Norway by sea, and visitedseveral fjords, because I wanted tosee and photograph spectacular settings for my new book (workingtitle Pursuit ). In an earlier book,Expedient sailed far into the ice of the Southern Ocean, and far intothe remote Pacific. I did not go tothose places.

Would y ou have liked to have lived

during the periodin which yournovels take place

No. Life in eigh-teenth century England was formost people harsunforgiving, andbrutally short. Liexpectancy was

about 40 years, iyou survived infancy. Even for the

very well-to-do, illness often meana nasty, painful death. Medical care

was primitive. There were no drainso outbreaks of cholera and otherdiseases were common. Towns andcities stank. Life aboard ship in thRoyal Navy was hard. Even the ofcers lived cramped, unlovely livesFor ordinary jacks, their one real sace was strong drink, half a pint of80-proof rum per day, watereddown and served as grog.

The dialogue in y our Rennie/Hay tenovels lends a feeling of authenticitfor the time and the world in whichthey lived. How have you achievedthis?

Largely by trying to think in their voices, if that makes sense. Duringmy research for these stories I readan enormous anount of contempo-raneous material diaries, letters,

journals, and official documents and then reread Jane Austen andsome Fielding, and one or two othernovelists of the period. By accus-toming my inner ear to the languageof the time I was able to hear my characters, and then to start think-ing and talking as they did. Of course it can only be an approxima-tion of eighteenth century speech, but at least it is reasonably consis-

    tent, I think.

Do you f ind inspiration for y our writing in marine art? Who are yourfavorite artists?

Yes, very much. A fine marine artist and there are many down theyears can give you a strong senseof ships at sea, particularly in heavy

weather, and in battle. I go frequent-

ly to the National MaritimeMuseum at Greenwich in London,

where there is a great collection of marine paintings, and at home Ihave many books of reproductions. There are too many to list in detail, but of the earlier Dutch painters Ilike William van Diest. Anotherartist with a Dutch name, who wasborn in England, Cornelis van de

Velde. John Clevely (particularly forhis paintings of Deptford). J.M.W.Turner. Nicholas Pocock, DominicSerres, George Chambers. Thesuperb etchings of Jean-JeromeBaugean. Among living artists thegreat Geoff Hunt.

Have y ou planned the series bey ondThe Gathe r ing Storm?

I am at present writing book six of the series, with the working titlePursuit . James Hayters domestic lifeis again in turmoil, and he deter-mines to set himself up as a mer-

chant master in a small brig. Whenthis venture collapses, his loyalfriend Captain William Rennie RNcomes to his aid. The pursuitinvolves Rennie and his newly appointed Pursuit Officer JamesHayter, again aboard Expedient , asthey chase a fast, weatherly shipsloop, Terces , from England north toNorway and the intricacies and dan-gers of the fjords, and beyond.

Expedient suffers severe damage, butthe pursuit continues into the North Atlantic.

Is there anything else you would liketo share with our readers?

I usually plan my stories one at a

time, and through the series have aleast twice embarked on research fa new book, only to find that theplot I had devised was too wildly improbable to be a success. On on

of these false starts I had planned tsend Expedient to the strugglingearly penal colony at New South

Wales in Australia. When I begandetailed research into the very earldays of the colony, it became clearthat had my ship any ship turned up there in that desperateyear, the entire history of early

Australia would have been altered,so I abandoned that idea altogethe

Telling a good story is one thing, rewriting history is quite another.

HMS Expedient never existed ascommissioned ship in the RoyalNavy, but I want readers to believeshe did, and does, as she weighs asets sail each time, finds the windand heads into the open sea.

How and when was the idea f or Stock wins Mar it ime Miscell any born?

In the course of research for the nineThomas Kydd books that have been publishedto date (and the ones that are in the works) Ifound I had gathered a huge amount of fascinaing details and maritime lore that did not fitinto the plots. I squirreled all this surplus-to-requirements material away, together with othemaritime snippets that I came across in thecourse of reading or talking to various experts

All this was really just for my own personaenlightenment and delight, but then last yearKathy and my agent Carole Blake suggested Iturn my hand to writing a nonfiction book based on this vast reservoir of material. One

on the idea of a miscellany aboutthe Golden Age of Sail. A meetingin London with Carey followed andthe Miscellany project was born.

I must say its been a juggling act writing both my annual Kyddinstallment and the Miscellany inone year, but its been hugely enjoy-able, especially the hunt for addi-tional information on some arcanefact or another that I had saltedaway.

The caption under the main title isa ditty bag of wonders from theGolden Age of Sail. Please explain

what a ditty bag is for our readers. A ditty bag is asmall bag that wasused by seamen inthe days of old tostore small itemsand personal treas-ures. I wanted toconvey that the

    Miscellany was a

collection of sealore from theGolden Age of Sail that most spoketo me. Each sailors ditty bag dif-fered from his messmates ones so itseemed an appropriate descriptionfor my eclectic collection.

Did the initial concept change muchas y ouve gone on?

My original idea for the book was acompilation of facts, feats, supersti-tions and maritime misfortunes. Ialso thought it would be nice tointersperse these with 50 salty say-ings, phrases inherited from the seaand very much in use today, such ashigh and dry and first rate.

    In discussions with Carey Smith

and her assistant editor Vicky Orchard there were some additionsthat they felt would be useful toreaders a short introduction toeach of the five sections of the book and a foreword by me. They also feltit would be helpful to list my pick of the 25 top maritime museumsand historic ships and a few otheradditions were agreed along the way.

Who do you see your Miscel l any particularly appealing to?

I hope both nautical novices and oldsalts will find it enjoyable. Its the

kind of book you can flick open and

find something you didnt know orbe reminded of something you hadforgotten. Or, of course, you canread it cover to cover. And I hopethat some of my huge admirationfor those iron men in wooden shipsis transmitted along the way.

Did you have much inf luence on

the book design and lay out?

From the start I felt the book shouldhave black and white illustration, contemporary to the times if possi-ble. We were consulted at each stageof the design, but I have to say I feltit all came together from the startthanks to our publisher Eburys

    vision for the book.

Is the material all from y our richstore of sea resources?

A lot is, yes, but I also did extensivreading to supplement what I had imy personal library. I probably hav500 books on the period now, and

vast database in which I recordinformation from other sources suas visits to libraries and archives.

Were y ou responsible f or sourcingthe delightf ul illustrations in thebook ?

Kathy and Isourced severalhundred we likedand Eburys desiger then chose theones he felt workbest. We are very pleased with thefinished product. particularly wante

to include an illustration of exploreMatthew Flinderss cat Trim, which

was done by the Australian artist Annette Onslow. She very kindly gave permission to reproduce theillustration in the book, but thepainting was in an art exhibition inSydney at the time, and she had toarrange for it to be taken down afthours and scanned for me.

What has your wife and literary partner Kathys role been?

As usual, Kathy has been a truepartner for this book. Her mainrole, apart from keeping me oncourse with deadlines and helpingsource illustrations, has been on th

Putting you on the spot, please pick three favorite items from the book.

Thats hard, because by the nature of the book all the items are incidentsor facts that personally to me exem-plified the spirit of the Golden Ageof Sail. But if I had to pick three it

would be Richard GrenvillesRevenge , Drakes wedding, and theLOrient coffin.

How dif f erent has work-ing on the Miscel l any beenfrom writing about Kydd ?

In some ways, chalk andcheese. With a novel of 100,000 words you have

quite a bit of scope todevelop plot and charac-ters, etc. With the

Miscellany I was limited tono more than a few hun-dred words for each item,so I had to select one or

two aspects of a certaintopic which I felt really stood out or which illus-trated a particular characteristic of the period. Thi

was quite a challenge when dealing with some the great men of theGolden Age of Sail likeCook, Nelson, and SidneSmith. Many books havbeen written on each of them alone!

Is there a sequel in the works?

Not yet, but Ive enjoyed working on this Miscellaso much that I would lovto do more books in thisformat. Theres certainly no shortage of material!

Captains Content ious By Louis Arthur Norton

In Captains Contentious ,accomplished maritime his-torian Louis Arthur Nortonobserves that many of thecaptains of the ContinentalNavy were quite obstinate ascompared to their Britishcounterparts. Norton sur-

veys the lives and military accomplishments of fivecaptains in the nascent

Continental Navy, investi-gating how their personality flaws both hindered theircareers and enhanced their heroics in Revolutionary Warcombat.

This psychohistorical approach brings to life the idio-syncratic personalities of John Manley, Silas Talbot,Dudley Saltonstall, Joshua Barney, and that most quar-relsome of characters, John Paul Jones. Nortons fast-paced account of intertwining naval actions also servesas a maritime history of the war as experienced by thesemen. Norton draws from a wealth of primary and sec-ondary sources to present biographical sketches thatillustrate the five captains reckless bravado and frequentantagonism toward their fellow officers. Representingdifferent colonies and originating from diverse socialand economic backgrounds, this dysfunctional band of fractious mariners shared a common lust for glory and apenchant for infighting as they pursued favor and rank.
