WelcomeWell the sun has decided to show it’s lovely face and it seems to soften the hardest of people this time of year. Instead of angry

road rage faces, we have kind people letting us out at an awkward road junction. The sun seems to bring the best out in us all, and maybe that’s because we can do more outdoor activities like boating for example. Whether you have managed to keep your boat going during the winter months or had a break it’s that time of year to give your pride and joy some TLC, by using our pre-season checklist (pg13-14) you can make sure you are on the right track. With lots to look forward to this year we are giving you a head start with our What’s on guide (pg7-9) to get you out and about to enjoy 2015.

A big thank you to Vivienne Carmichael who has supplied our welcome image. Keep all

your images and stories coming we love to hear about things you have done. Until next time.

The 61st CWM FX London Boat Show drew to a close on 18 January after seeing an impressive 92,288 visitors through the doors of Excel London, a 4% increase to last years figures. Once again Burton Waters Boat Sales proudly represented Princess Yachts on their luxurious 10 boat display. After a successful show, and the sale of a new Princess 68 from ourselves, we are still seeing the results resonating well into 2015.

London Boat Show is a great trip for anyone keen on everything to do with the boating world and with 400 exhibitors there is something for everyone. We were happy to see many local faces milling around! The show had great positive vibes this year and wowed visitors with

its fierce new look – however, the ‘rain curtain’ upon entry caused a few laughs when it failed to stop and dribbled on a few unsuspecting boaters!

Murray Ellis, managing director of the CWM FX London Boat Show said: “Visitor feedback has been really positive, there’s been positive energy creating a fantastic atmosphere which has contributed to good sales.”

HRH The Princess Royal got involved in the building a boat by infusing the resin.

Other famous faces included Nicole Scherzinger, Sir Ben Ainslie, Michael Buerk, Nick Knowles and Rupert Grint.

Pam Coulton from the Burton Waters Clinic explains how good quality supplements may be the answer. We all strive to ensure that we have the best diet possible, not just for ourselves but for those in our care. With the best will in the world however, life often gets in the way, and we find ourselves increasingly eating foods for convenience, or at least eating a diet that isn’t as balanced as it should be. Busy lives don’t simply impact here as we don’t have the time to shop for, or prepare the ‘right’ foods. Many people take a food supplement as some kind of ‘insurance policy’, most common at times of vulnerability as with growing children, convalescing or when we are old. There are many types and brands of supplement available in the market today, but just how appropriate are many of these?

It is important to choose the correct supplements, the right nutrients are crucial, but appropriate doses are essential. along with a suit-able format; eg, are tablets, capsules, powdered formulations or liquids best for you?

The Burton Waters Clinic stocks a range of supplements that Pam believes are the most appropriate all round. All the ingredients are pure and natural, ethically and sustainably sourced and manufactured in the UK, and clinically proven and tested to ensure absence of World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) prohibited substances – vital if you’re engaged in sporting activity.

Call in or reach us on 01522 520362 to the Burton Waters Clinic and ask about this range of supplements, and find the best way to ensure you have a balanced and nutritional diet.

the Year awards; one for the stunning Princess V48 Open and another for the first of its kind, the Princess S72.

The Princess 43, a previous winner of ‘Motor Boat of the Year for best flybridge up to 55ft’, made her way, hot off display from the show, onto our Ipswich sales pontoon. The Yacht proved amongst the most popular of the show. We also have the multi award-winning Princess V39 outside the sales office. Next year’s London Boat Show will take place at the Excel Centre from 8-17 January 2016, but if you’re looking for the next big show take a ride over to the Southampton Show 11th-20th September 2015. See you there.

Welcome to the zillionth article on ‘what to eat. It seems that everywhere you turn there’s the inevitable spate of nutritional naming

and shaming. I’d like to try my hardest to put the aforementioned issue to bed. One of the biggest problems with the general publics understanding of food is caused by the misrepresentation of it into over simplified categories; be it calories or macro nutrient groups (grams of either carbohydrate, fat, or protein). These umbrella terms used to represent food constantly take it in turn to receive a kicking as public enemy number one. The majority of the articles say we should steer clear of sugars, proteins can potentially cause cancer, or fats are an addictive waistline-expanding nightmare, it begs the question….What is left to eat? This sweeping categorisation wrongly lumps together both ‘good’ and ‘bad’ foods into the same headspace. The grams of carbohydrate, fat and protein that make up our foods tells you little about the actual value in sustaining a healthy metabolism. The split between processed and unprocessed foods is a far simpler approach.Eating to a drastic calorie deficit or cutting back on a macro nutrient group, initially is successful, but plataues or stops altogether through the health problems caused by the inevitable malnutrition

(I’m looking at you Atkins).A portion of carbohydrates is based around

a 30g serving. This equates to around 2 slices of bread, the equivalent from broccoli is around 400g! Or you need to consume 200g of blueberries, or a kilo of spinach to equate to a 30g serving. It is impossible to over consume these foods through sheer volume. We fail to recognise dietary staples such as bread, pasta, and cereals as highly processed foods. The much touted health benefits of whole grains and its fibre content just don’t stack up when compared to their unprocessed cousins. I’m focusing on carbohydrates but the same health benefits are true for fat and protein. In a world of quick fix diets and the medias thirst for an exiting story, the issue of what to eat for weight loss gets lost beneath the more long term benefit of living longer through healthy eating (which side effects include weight loss). We’re talking Micro nutrients not Macro nutrients, produce not products. When it comes to what to eat, ask yourself ,“Does this even look like REAL food”? If the answer is no, its probably not that great for your weight loss. The revelation that natural, whole foods beat processed ones (kept edible through the use of preservatives and E-numbers) shouldn’t be news to anyone. Unfortunately, it just doesn’t make for a very exciting article…

A brand new show home at The Quays is giving house hunters a taste of life at Burton Waters.

With the final properties at The Quays now on the market, Beal Homes has prepared one of its ‘Marina View’ homes as a fully furnished show home featuring a contemporary open plan living space opening out onto a roof terrace with marina views and three bedrooms, including a master with en-suite and balcony overlooking the water.

“With the final thirteen Quays homes on the market there’s still a good choice,” said Beal’s Michelle Aitken. “However, as these include our last sizeable marina front homes at Burton Waters, now is definitely the time to take another look.”

A row of south west facing homes offers some of the best plots at Burton Waters. Built in Burton Waters’ distinctive architectural style, these have either three or four bedrooms, lounges opening onto water facing terraces, where you can sit and soak up the marina atmosphere, and first floor master bedrooms with balconies.

Final off water plots at The Quays start at £219,995 and homes range up to the largest marina facing four bedroom ‘Chater’ at £389,995.

“With its marina basins, rural setting, lush planting, wildlife, meandering footpaths and its great location for exploring Lincolnshire’s cycle and waterways, Burton Waters is definitely a special place,” says Michelle Aitken.

“Purchasers will enjoy all Burton Waters has to offer, including 24 hour security, beautiful

It’s that time again, when we start getting out the power washers, finding out that we used up all the cleaner and polish last year, then heading off to the chandlers for new supplies to the cry of “How much?”

In January the new club committee got down to the job of arranging the Events Programme for 2015. After 5 years of doing it you would think that the job would get easier, but with new ideas coming from our members all the time,

There are the perennial favorites of course, such as the Treasure Hunt and Cruises in Company (which this year will include a 7 day cruise to York), and so good was it last year, that the Midsummer Cocktail Cruise is back again.

A new venture is to arrange subsidized training courses for all our members. This year we are organizing RYA Power Boat (Parts 1 & 2), VHF Radio Operator and First Aid Training to all those who want it.

There is an appeal that is currently running to raise money for two defibrillators at Burton Waters. The Club has donated £100 and we hope that many more people will donate to this worthwhile cause. You never know if you may need it to help you one day!

May we take this opportunity to wish everyone good sailing and have a great season.

sprING BoatchecKlIstYou’ve spent all winter dreaming about getting your boat on the water. But have you checked your boat properly? Some of the things you may take for granted once the season is under way have a way of getting misplaced, running out-of-date or generally deteriorating during those months of inactivity. So the best way to make sure you’ve got everything in order for a fun and “uneventful” first launch? Is to follow this handy pre-launch checklist:

1 Oil Check If you did not change the engine oil when you put the boat up for the season, now is the time to

do it. Make sure you change the oil filter also. Check the oil in the outdrive.

2BAttery iNSpectiON Reattach the cables. Make sure the terminals are not corroded. If so, wipe them clean. If your

battery takes water, fill it up. A dry battery is not good. With a battery tester, check the volts and amps. Does it have juice? If it is charged and still no luck, it may be time to bite the bullett and buy a new battery.

3cOOliNg SySteM Hopefully you drained the cooling system if you live in a cold winter climate to prevent freezing.

If so, fill it back up. Rinse out the strainer and check the hoses for cracks.

4Fuel SySteM You also should have topped off the tank with gas to prevent any moisture and condensation

forming in the tank and diluting the gas. Change the fuel filter. Make sure the fuel line is attached and not cracked. In the winter these hoses can become dry and brittle.16

www.burtonwatersmoorings.com

5DiStriButOr Take the distributor cap off and clean it out. Corrosion could have occurred during the winter.

Make sure all connections are restored.

6BeltS Tighten the belts if needed. You should only be able to push the belt slightly down. If the belts do

not fit snugly in their pulley grooves, they may be worn and in need of replacement. Belts that are not tight will wear faster because they will likely begin to slip. The alternator belt usually wears faster than the others. A sign of a worn belt is black soot somewhere in the vicinity of the pulley.

■ Change the spark plugs■ Lubricate the engine with WD-40■ Check all hoses■ Check power steering/cables■ Test the bilge pump■ Replace the drain plug■ Check rudder and shafts■ Inspect the prop■ Test the horn■ Test the VHF radio■ Check the trim■ Inspect personal flotation devices■ Check the fire extinguisher expiration date■ Make sure the anchor in on board

*** The above de-winterizing tips are only a list of suggested things to do your boat. For complete instructions see your boat’s owners manual or consult the Marina for a mechanical check-up if you’re not sure.

For many years Distress Flares were the recommended means of ‘Calling for Help’. major fires over the last couple of years. It is interesting to note that damaged or unstable flares require the services of the Bomb Disposal Squad! Those who decide to keep them onboard their vessel will find they increase in numbers over the years as they purchase new in date flares. During my RNLI ‘Advice on Board’ visits to boats it is not unusual to find over 20 flares onboard with many over 10 years out of date. Please remember these are dangerous explosive pieces of equipment and will degrade over the years making them a hazard for all those onboard. Now is the time to look over the Pyrotechnics you hold and dispose of those that are out of date legally!

From the 1st of April 2010 a new system for the disposal of time expired pyrotechnics, like distress flares, was introduced. You will need to contact your nearest centre to make an appointment. This is very important as you can travel to a centre only to find the nominated qualified person to take your

flares is not available and you are left to take them back home! Our nearest centre is MRCC Humber, 01262 672 317, at Bridlington. Be ready to give details of the type, quantity, age and condition of your time expired pyrotechnics. Do not take other boaters flares, or large quantities as they may not be accepted. Also be aware they only accept pyrotechnics from recreational water users.

my journeyRachael Jennings decided to take her much loved boat Naughty Cal into new waters. Part two continues here:

We awoke early the next morning to find the wind had dropped, so swiftly we get Naughty-Cal ready to leave,

go and pay our mooring fees and enter the sea lock full of excitement. As we exit the lock and cruise towards the pier heads it appeared as though we were in for a calm run once more. How wrong could we be?

As soon as we left the safety of the river it was apparent that we would have to abort this run. The waves had picked up into a large swelly mess with huge troughs and peaks at random intervals. Just turning around safely was a nightmare in itself. Finally back in the river we could catch our breath and prepare for locking into Royal Quays once more. Exploration by foot it is then. The next day we awake to calm winds once more, so with some trepidation we leave again, heading out to sea. Today the sea was much calmer, although still far from ideal. There were still big waves but they were far more organised and spaced well apart. More suitable for cruising we kept the speed down, Naughty-Cal was comfortable cruising at about 20 knots in the conditions. Tees Bay was once more quite unpleasant but once past the bay

the sea calmed down once more and it wasn’t long before we were cruising past Whitby with its unmistakable headland on our way to Scarborough.

As we approached Scarborough the skies cleared and the sun shone upon us and as we crossed the South Bay heading towards the harbour entrance, the bay was buzzing with trip boats, speed boats and small fast fishers were whizzing around the bay. The entry to the harbour is narrow but easy enough to navigate although you do need to be aware of the trip boats closing in on you as you make your entry. The visitor moorings here are nice with new fully serviced floating pontoons, ideally located so they are under the watchful eye of the public on the harbour wall during the day, but nice and quiet during the evening, away from the many bars and pubs.

All too soon our time in Scarborough is over and we head out under blue skies once more, pointing Naughty-Cal’s bow south as we head ever closer to home. The sea state is once again quite varied, picking up as we round Flamborough Head and cross Bridlington Bay but flattening out again as we approach Spurn Point and the Humber estuary. Cruising in the confines of the Humber suddenly seemed very strange after the many miles of wide open seas, and as we approached our next port of call Hull it seems smaller still.

enjoying the sights and it is once again time to move on. Next stop is a couple of nights chilling out in West Stockwith basin on the Trent. Cruising past the Apex Light at Trent End and heading up the river we suddenly feel very much more hemmed in. How small the Trent feels but somehow as we head further upstream towards home we suddenly gain a sense of safety and happiness, we are almost home, which at some points during the past couple of weeks had seemed unlikely.

Finally, after a couple of days relaxing we set out on the last familiar leg of this trip, up the Trent and back to Burton Waters. If the Trent seemed small the Fossdyke was tiny. As we cruised along the ditch, turned into the marina entrance and moored on our berth we both sighed with a huge sense of relief. We were home again after a fantastic, trouble free two weeks on board.

INGREDIENTS

For the yoghurt sauce:

200g low-fat natural yoghurt

Pinch of salt and freshly ground

black pepper • Pinch of ground

cumin • Pinch of ground coriander

For the duck:

1 tsp ground cumin • 1 tsp ground

coriander • ½ tsp salt • 2 large duck

breasts, skin on (about 0.5 kg) • 1

tbsp pomegranate molasses

For the rice:

25g unsalted butter • 1 cinnamon

stick • 2 cardamom pods, lightly

crushed in a pestle and mortar • 1

bay leaf • Pinch of saffron (optional)

Salt and freshly ground black pepper

• 250g basmati rice

Seeds of 1 pomegranate • 2 small

Pink Lady ® apples, unpeeled, cored

and diced • Large bunch of flat

leaf parsley, chopped • 25g shelled

pistachios, roughly chopped

METhODStep 1 Make the yoghurt sauce by combining all the ingredients in a small bowl. Chill in the fridge until ready to use.

Step 2 Pre-heat a small griddle or frying pan to medium. Combine the cumin, coriander and salt, then us-ing a sheet of kitchen towel, dry the duck breasts. Rub the spice mix all over the duck, then using a new sheet of kitchen towel, pat the breasts dry again and place skin side down on to the pan. You won’t need to use any fat. Fry over a low to medium heat for about 7 minutes, until the skin is crispy and then turn over to cook on the other side for a further

7 minutes (perhaps a little longer, depending on the size of the duck breasts). Transfer to a warm plate and leave to rest. Set the duck pan to one side for use later.

Step 3 While the duck is cooking, prepare the rice. Melt the butter in a medium saucepan, then add the cinnamon stick, cardamom pods, bay leaf, saffron, a good pinch of salt and four or five grinds of black pepper. Stir the spices around in the butter for about 1 minute and then stir in the rice. Add enough water to cover the rice by about 1.5 cm (a good measure is to stick your index finger into the water, it should come up to the first joint). Bring to the boil uncov-

ered, stir, then cover tightly and leave to simmer gently for 8 minutes. Then turn off the heat and leave for a further 5 minutes. Take off the lid, fluff up the rice and gently stir in the pomegran-ate seeds, Pink Lady® apple and parsley. Transfer to a warmed serving dish.

Step 4 On a chopping board, carve each duck breast on a slant into fairly thin slices. Add the pomegranate molas-ses to the pan you used to cook the duck (you may need to add a little water if the molasses is very thick) and gently warm through. Quickly toss the duck breast slices in the warmed pomegranate molasses, then arrange on top of the rice.

If you have any great ideas that you wish to share with your fellow moorers please email your recepies to [email protected]

METhODStep 1 Preheat the oven to 180°C/gas mark 4. Grease the tray bake tin (if possible, use a 12 x miniature tray bake tin. Otherwise, the cake can be sliced once baked). If you don’t have one, use 12 silicone muffin cases, or indeed, an 8”/20cm loose-bottomed cake tin.

Step 2 Separate the yolks from the whites of the eggs. Place four yolks into one bowl and, in a separate bowl, the whites of just three of the eggs, reserving the last egg white for the glaze. Using an electric whisk, whisk the three egg whites until they form soft peaks, then set aside.

Step 3 Take the bowl with the egg yolks and add the sugar, cinnamon and orange zest. Whisk until pale and creamy. Then stir in the ground almonds. This will make the mixture quite stiff, don’t worry, it’s meant to be like that!

Step 4 Using a metal spoon, gently fold in the egg whites, a little at a time, until completely combined.

Step 1 Spoon the mixture into your bar tray. Press one or two frozen raspberries down into each bar and then lay a couple of Pink Lady® apple slices on top, pressing the white edge down into the mixture to show off the lovely blush of the apple skin.

Step 5 Cook in the oven for 25-30 minutes, until golden and cooked through.

Step 6 In a small bowl or cup, mix together a teaspoon of jam with a teaspoon of the remain-ing egg white. Using a pastry brush, carefully paint each bar with this mixture to produce a glossy finish. Leave in the tin until completely cool.

METhODStep 1 Halve and core the Pink Lady® apples, place in a saucepan with the wine, sugar, orange zest and juice and the cloves and cinnamon. Simmer gently until just tender but still holding their shape for approximately 30 minutes.

Step 2 Mix together the yoghurt and cinnamon.

Step 3 Serve warm or cold with the pomegranate seeds scattered over and a spoonful of the yoghurt, sprinkled with a little more cinnamon if desired.
