WelcomeThe darker nights, the cosy fires in pubs this time of year can be delightful if you’re willing to embrace it. I for one will be doning

some suitable clothes and heading over to Rutland Waters for a brisk walk, followed by a swift tipple to finish at one of the great pubs located near there (pg13).

We all need to prepare for possible bad weather especially if you’re a boat owner. Take a look at our quick check guide to making sure your pride and joy is ready to fend off Jack Frost (pg16-17). As we head out of 2014 and into another new year we have cobbled together some up and coming events in our What’s on section the new Sponge Bob movie which is out in March 2015 is top of my children’s list(pg12)!

If after Christmas I have any pennies left I will be saving up for the much waited for apple

As the 2014 PSP Southampton Boat Show drew to a close on Sunday 21 September, over 112,000 people had enjoyed a real festival of boating. Exhibitors and visitors alike made the most of the improving economy and glorious weather throughout the 10 days.

Strong sales have been reported throughout the whole duration of the Show, with the very first sale of a boat being made by 10.30am on the opening day. Many companies reported equalling last year’s total sales by mid week this year.

Murray Ellis, Managing Director, National Boat Shows said: “The PSP Southampton Boat Show 2014 has been a great success. More than 10,000 visitors

got out on the water, families enjoyed a ride on the Boat Show Eye and boaters bought everything from canoes to multi million pound yachts. The weather has been glorious and spirits have been high, once again confirming the PSP Southampton Boat Show as one of the world’s leading boat shows .

The squat. As an exercise it is a maneuver that when done correctly promotes muscle building, fat burning, and gives a

phenomenal core workout. Unfortunately, for a lot of people the squat is nothing but a clicky mess that leads to pain and discomfort. When we go from crawling to walking there is a vital in-between phase where we support our body weight with a prop like a sofa and with our hips well below our knees we drive ourselves skyward. Our very first squat! No one prepares a baby with coaching points for how to get themselves from the floor to standing, so how is it as adults we constantly need to be reminded of how to navigate the squat injury free? Is there something between child and adulthood that removes this skill from our arsenal? The answer.....The chair. When we go to school we sit for 8 hours ,this is before you factor in sitting in the car, watching T.V, and occasional trips to the loo (research suggests that we spend 3 years in the average lifetime on the throne). Most chairs position us with a 90 degree bend, we should be capable of about 120 (knees to chest). As we age we go weeks without experiencing a squat. These underused muscles weaken to protect the stability of the joints, the body shortens the

muscles aound them locking them there. This creates trigger points (knots of matted down scar tissue) which helps stabilise our joints so when we move our limbs they don’t go popping off. Great!!!… Unfortunately not.

Long term ramifications of a limited range of motion equates to faulty movement patterns. So when we do come up against a squat, the body begins to look for mobility from areas that would help. So when the knee picks up the slack from the hips lack of movement it shoots over the toes which can be disasterous! Excessive mobility in the knee is a massive problem, same can be said for the lower back. If you’ve been following so far the answer should be clear. Were talking causes not symptoms here. Its the hip, stinking up the place for its two neighbours!

So my advice, stay active, get new skills that require a broad spectrum of movement, if your’re sat, try sitting with your hips below your knees, and if you are experiencing any pain get a professional to look at your movement first and find out specifically where you’re tight. I’m willing to bet my hat your missing movement is at your hip, combine this with the above when your movement is less compromised and, bingo. Not only will your squat be restored but you will have a base for a happy healthy pain free active lifestyle.

“It is rumoured that Santa spends his summer holidays at Burton Waters and is a member of Burton Waters Boat Club. If you see him around say Hello Santa”

The Quays at the Burton Waters inland marina close to Lincoln is nearing completion and homes will be available for a pre-Christmas move, reports developer Beal Homes.

Two ‘Marina View’ properties with roof terraces looking out across the water will be ready for early December. These will be followed by the last of the waterfront properties, a row of south west facing houses with gardens fronting on to the marina, which will be roofed by the end of 2014. The prime location of these three bedroom Brant and four bedroom Chater designs make them fantastic plots at Burton Waters.

A small number of off water plots, which will overlook an attractive oval water feature, add to the choice for purchasers.

“The Marina View homes are ready for the buyers’ finishing touches,” confirms Beal’s Sue Waudby.

“Though construction of the final south west plots is advanced and there is still the opportunity to shape their own interiors with our designer to create individual homes.”

With these homes buyers can decide on their preferred internal layout, as well as selecting finishes and designer name fixtures and fittings. The external architectural design of the nine south west facing properties follows Burton Waters’ distinctive style influenced by Dutch waterside architecture. Oriented to make the most of the views over the waters, rooms open onto balconies and the top of the range Chaters have a top floor master suite with arched full length French windows allowing natural light to flood in. Prices of these homes at The Quays range from £244,995 up to £389,995.

Burton Waters offers acres of reflective water, nature filled footpaths, well-established lush landscapes designed by Ian Stubbs, an oriental over water restaurant, Italian restaurant, the Woodcock pub and a David Lloyd health club.

Three people check into a hotel. They pay £30 to the manager and go to their room. The manager suddenly remembers that the room rate is £25 and gives £5 to the bellboy to return to the people. On the way to the room the bellboy reasons that £5 would be difficult to share among three people so he pockets £2 and gives £1 to each person. Now each person paid £10 and got back £1. So they paid £9 each, totalling £27. The bellboy has £2, totalling £29. Where is the missing £1?

We started off the second part of the summer in style, with Cocktails on the Brayford Pool. Six boats with very full crews set off at 18:00 for Lincoln and anchored out of the way from other boats. The instructions to all crews were to bring along one cocktail per boat. These were totally ignored by all and sundry. One of our number namely the delightful Heather raided her pub larder and brought enough food to feed a navy. A passing boat came

In August eight boats and crews took part in what is becoming our annual Treasure Hunt. The clues this time were even more cryptic with boats milling around in Burton Waters desperately looking for the first set. However, the

searching flotilla did eventually move on towards Lincoln but not before being stopped by the organizer who was not beyond taking a bribe to stop us getting into a dingy to row up a drainage ditch (for no reason whatsoever). After darting around the Brayford looking for more clues we all finished up at the Pyewipe where one member of each crew had to prove their seamanship by completing a splice. Followed by an al fresco meal there. Our thanks go to Mike & Tricia Taggart for organizing the event. Who won? Well yours truly of course!

In September six boats assembled for a 3 day cruise in company to Farndon & Gunthorpe. Catching the tide nicely we cruised sedately down to Cromwell Lock arriving just before the tide turned. We passed on through Nether Lock & Town Lock almost without stopping as the locks had been set in our favour. We ploughed in to Farndon Marina, arriving at 16:30 just enough time to change, have an early evening drink and a great meal at the Riverside pub.

In the morning the sun was up and we were off to Gunthorpe for the day. If you haven’t cruised that section of the Trent, you are missing a treat. Once again all the locks were favourable so we got to Gunthorpe about noon. The trip home was a delight in great weather. Having

stopped again overnight at Farndon we arrived at Burton Waters at 16:30. A great cruise and great company.

Boat Training is a big part of why the Burton Waters Boat Club exists, and we have had two of our First Friday Club Nights devoted to it. Mike Taggart took the first evening looking at the theory of good boat handling and then on the following meeting some of the more experienced members took to the water to put other members through their paces. We shall be looking to have more of these practical boat handling sessions next season.

We took some training at the Scout Outdoor Activity Centre in Nottingham where 6 club members spent the weekend gaining their Parts 1 & 2 RYA Powerboat Handling certificates. Thanks to our club contacts we were able to offer this course at very competitive rates.

Finally in October our final fling of the year, our Laying-Up Supper at Marino’s! 32 members and guests attended and had to listen to me ramble on hopefully I said all the right things?

BWBC had a great 2014 with many successful events. If you’d like to be a part of it in 2015 we would love to hear from you. Give our Membership Secretary Keith a call on 01522 522122 or have a look at our website www.burtonwatersboatclub.co.uk

WiNTeriSaTiON Of yOUr crafT1 your Boat

As we all know, it is very important to look after your boat and get it ready for winter to avoid any

unwelcome surprises come spring.A methodical winterisation routine will not only help

protect against a cracked hull or engine, but can save you having to replace any mould ridden soft furnishings. The off-season is also the perfect time to get any work done on the boat. By following these simple steps you can save yourself time and money when spring comes so you can enjoy the first flushes of the warmer season.

2 the enGineYou might want to have your engine serviced around the same time as the winterisation, as

any water or acids that have been lying in the oil will begin to corrode the metals within the engine and can contribute to premature engine wear.

Your engine should be given an oil change whilst warm. The oil filter must be changed and then flushed to protect against freezing as even a tiny amount of water left in an engine can cause big damage. This can be a messy job so have plenty of gloves, drip trays and rags to hand. Check with the marina regarding disposal of waste oil and oil contaminated rags and filters.

Now is a good time to drain the coolent system. Flush it through with clean water, then top up with antifreeze. Not only will this stop the waterways freezing and cracking the engine, but the antifreeze acts a corrosion inhibitor so when the engine is going to be standing up, it is best to make sure the antifreeze is fresh and diluted to the engine manufacturers recommended ratio.

To protect the engines moving parts, spray with fogging oil either through the spark plug holes or into the carburettor while the engine is turning over. Check your boats maintenance manual to find out which is the recommended method for your boat.

Drive belts should be loosened off as when standing around under tension they may crack.

The steering and control mechanisms should all be checked and greased thoroughly. Work the grease in to the joints and ensure everything moves freely.

3 fueLAlways take care when handling fuel. Keep the area you are working in well ventilated and

ensure those around you are aware you are working on the fuel system so they are aware not to allow any naked flames near the area.

It is worth inspecting the quality of your fuel by replacing the pre-fuel filter. This can help determine if you have any signs of diesel bug and the quality of your fuel tanks. Now is the best time to have these drained and repaired/replaced if need be.

Preventing condensation is done by filling the fuel tanks to within 1” full - this allows room for expansion if there is an unexpected warm day and then adding stabilisers to help prevent the fuel from breaking down over the winter months. Running the engine for 10 minutes after adding the stabiliser will ensure it is thoroughly circulated throughout the engine. To further reduce the chance of condensation and to stop it getting stuck, add some Vaseline to the fuel cap thread.

4 BatteriesMarine batteries are very expensive, and if left flat all winter they can be very costly

to replace. If possible the battery should be disconnected and topped up with distilled water. Periodically charging them with shore power will help to keep them on top form.

5inside the BoatMould just loves soft furnishings so take out anything that you can (cushions, bedding etc).

If you cannot remove the soft furnishings try to hang them from the ceiling so air can easily pass through them. Make sure the boat is vented to minimise moisture build up. Low power consumption heaters and chemical sprays can also help to reduce the risk of unwanted mildew as can a dehumidifier for areas where ventilation is poor. Remove any electronics that you can, and spray any exposed connections with a moisture displacing lubricant. Remove any perishable items from the boat and empty then clean

Any sink or shower units should be cleaned out and pumped with antifreeze. Turn on the hot and cold taps and turn off the main water valve. Flush any toilets and ensure that they have some blue in them.

6turn off any Gas suppLies.Check the bilge is pumped out and clean. This will help when you inspect the boat to see if any

fluids have leaked in.

7check reGuLarLyBy visiting your boat regularly throughout the winter you can make sure that everything is as

it should be, which will help to minimise any damage that might be sustained during a winter freeze. Ensure covers have not moved. Remove any standing water from covers as this will drag covers from their correct

positions. Check for signs of mildew build up. If on the water, check the bilge pumps are working.

After careful winterisation your boat will be better protected against the elements and from any common problems that may arise after a long lay-up.

Or if we hopefully have a mild winter you can still make full use of your boat to visit a few cosy pubs!

8 your BoatAs we all know, it is very important to look after your boat and get it ready for winter to avoid any

unwelcome surprises come spring.A methodical winterisation routine will not only help

protect against a cracked hull or engine, but can save you having to replace any mould ridden soft furnishings. The off-season is also the perfect time to get any work done on the boat. By following these simple steps you can save yourself time and money when spring comes so you can enjoy the first flushes of the warmer season.

Pete Barnard is a man of many talents and we are glad that he can join us to share his wealth of experience.

Once again the RNLI invited me to man the Sea Safety Stand at the Southampton International Boat Show. However this year, in a cost saving exercise, they changed the format and accommodation arrangements for those manning the stand. As can be seen from the below photograph the usual stand has been replaced by the ‘Roadshow’ Van and the 4.9m RIB the ‘Evelyn M Murdoch’

a craft presented to us by a charitable trust. It is used to demonstrate Safety Equipment and was launched earlier this year at Burton Waters so it could attend the Lincoln Boat Festival. This exercise has saved the RNLI a sum of around £20,000 (yes we have to pay for a site at the show!) by paying far less fees for the patch and that there was no longer the need to assemble and pack up the

regular stand with staff from Poole. The accommodation savings were

achieved by staying over the water at Hythe where the charges were a fifth of those charged in Southampton. We stayed in a very pleasant Hotel ‘The Maples’ and were well looked after, with an out of this world breakfast, from our hosts. The journey to the Boat Show was very interesting and novel as we caught a ferry from Hythe Pier to Southampton Town Quay with a journey time of 10 minutes with short walks at each end. To get to the ferry we had to travel the half mile long pier on the oldest continuously operating public running pier railway in the world.

The railway was fitted in 1909 and was reconstructed and electrified in 1922. The track is 2 foot narrow gauge and is electrified by a 250V DC third rail. The line is operated by two electric

locomotives built in 1917 by Brush. They were originally battery powered being used in a World War 1 Mustard Gas factory in Avonmouth.

The theme at the RNLI Stand was the two major RNLI concerns for boaters; the wearing of correctly fitting and serviced Lifejackets and Calling for Help equipment. We were kept busy during the show opening hours with visits from over 150 people per day.

In summary a most enjoyable experience with the RNLI getting their Sea Safety messages across to the public.

Coastal fatality figures recently released reveal that 167 people lost their lives at the coast in 2013; the highest number in four years. The number of near-misses was even higher, with the RNLI’s UK lifeboat crews and lifeguards saving 368 lives.

The charity has launched a major drowning awareness campaign; Respect the Water, warning people to stay safe in and around water.

An average of 160 people die at the coast each year – that’s more than the number killed in cycling accidents which was 109 in 2013! The RNLI is aiming to halve the number of accidental coastal deaths by 2024.

In total 640 people have died around the UK coast over the past four years. The fatality figures shows a clear gender divide, with adult men accounting for

the new rnLi Campaign “respeCt the water”over two-thirds (68%) of these deaths.

Many would assume adrenaline sports and rough weather are the biggest cause of incidents but, in fact, it’s casual every day use of the coast and sea which often results in fatalities. Swimming and general leisure in the water accounts for 20% of last year’s coastal deaths.

Cold water shock is frequently thought to be a contributing factor. Despite warm summer air temperatures, the UK sea temperature is cold enough year-

round to trigger cold water shock – the average UK sea temperature is just 12 degrees, but cold water shock can set in at any temperature below 15 degrees. It causes uncontrollable gasping, which draws water into the lungs and can lead to drowning. The RNLI is warning people to be aware of the effects of cold water and to acclimatise gradually when getting into the water.

Other common factors are rip currents and fatigue. Rip currents consistently account for two-thirds of the environmental related incidents; over 1000 people are rescued each year by RNLI Lifeguards. If you think you are able to swim, swim parallel to the beach. When you’re out of the effects of the rip, make you way towards the shore. And it’s not only water-based activities which put people in danger. Slips, trips and falls while walking or running are a major issue, accounting for 32% of last year’s coastal deaths. Alcohol consumption is also a problem in around one-fifth of deaths, with 28 (17%) of the fatalities last year involved alcohol. The majority of these are men, who accounted for 23 of the 28 alcohol-related fatalities last year.

Ross Macleod, the RNLI’s Coastal Safety Manager, says:

“With more people losing their lives on the coast each year than are killed in cycling accidents, we’re trying to make people, particularly men, realise that they are at risk from drowning if they don’t follow some basic but important safety advice. We want people to go to the coast and enjoy it – we’re lucky to have an exceptional coastline around the UK – but we want them to understand there are risks, and they should not underestimate the power of the sea.

Our key advice is choose a lifeguarded beach and swim between the red and yellow flags, where you’ll have professional lifeguards looking after you. If you want a few drinks on the beach, remember alcohol and water doesn’t mix, so drink after swimming, not before. Remember that, despite warm air temperatures, the UK sea temperature is cold enough year-round to trigger cold water shock, so acclimatise gradually. Don’t over estimate your ability- the sea is a very different environment to a pool and even the strongest swimmer can tire quickly. If you get caught out obey the 3 R’s (see pg22). Stay away from cliff edges, stick to pathways and read the safety signs to avoid a nasty fall into the water.

my journeyRachael Jennings decided to take her much loved boat Naughty Cal into new waters. Here’s her journal of events:

it was to be a real trip of firsts for both us and Naughty-Cal; our first trip up the East coast and more importantly our first coastal cruise

without the company of other boats. The first leg of the journey was familiar enough, a Friday evening cruise along the Fossdyke to Torksey to catch our 8.30pm lock out onto the tidal Trent.

The next leg of the trip was again one we were familiar with, the days cruise from Torksey Lock to Grimsby with a few hours spent at anchor at Trent End waiting for the tide before heading for the Humber Cruising Association basin in the old Fish Dock, Grimsby.

Now we were into the unknown. As we set off from Grimsby on a grey Sunday morning the weather didn’t look overly promising, however we were treated to flat calm seas from the moment we left Grimsby to the moment we arrived at the pier heads at Whitby. Unfortunately the rain which had threatened all the way along the coast finally arrived as we approached the visitor moorings, so it was a rather soggy arrival in Whitby.

After a fabulous three nights in Whitby we set out once more into new terrority heading yet further North to Newcastle. Sea conditions were not

quite as smooth as the previous run but were pleasant enough until we turned to cross Tees Bay, a large expanse of water at the mouth of the River Tees. Here the seas turned rather confused and the waves increased in height forcing us to reduce our cruising speed to avoid Naughty-Cal slamming into the troughs of the waves. Thankfully as we exited the bay and cruised closer to the mouth of the River Tyne the sea flattened out and we could once again increase our cruising speed. The pier heads at the mouth of the Tyne were a welcome vision as they loomed into sight, receiving us onto the Tyne.

The cruise up the Tyne towards Newcastle starts off very commercial and industrial, you share the confines of the river with huge car transporters, ferries and cruise ships with their tugs in attendance to guide them to their berths. Once past the docks the river takes a more meandering and rural course with tree lined banks rising up from the river, before giving way once more to industry on the outskirts of the city. Once around the last bend in the river you catch your first glimpse of the cities seven bridges and the pontoon moorings located right in the heart of the city along the quayside.

After an evening in Newcastle it was time to head back down river and closer to the sea. Our destination for today Royal Quays Marina in North Shields.

Naughty cal’s wake leaving Scarborough in the distance

Today’s cruise was simply retracing our steps the seven miles back down river towards the mouth of the Tyne. Royal Quays is a large, modern, fully serviced marina located in one of the old docks off the river, entry to the marina is via a large sea lock which is manned 24 hours a day.

It had been our intention to stay in Royal Quays for just one evening, however the weather and more importantly the wind had other ideas. We awoke to find a howling and blustery easterly wind which put pay to any ideas of leaving port today. So it was off on foot to explore North Shields, the regenerated Fish Quay being the highlight of the day.

We awoke early the next morning to find the wind had dropped, so swiftly we get Naughty-Cal ready to leave...Read part 2 in the next edition of Quay Life out end of February 2015.

pam Coulton from the Burton Waters Clinic explains how to protect your knees this winter. The knee is the largest joint in the human body, and it bears the greatest forces when our body is in motion. The knee works as it does thanks to a number of ligaments, and these all do different jobs in keeping our knees working.

Sometimes knee braces are worn during high impact sports such as skiing, snowboarding or motor-cross to prevent injury, as well as being worn after picking up a sports injury. Knee braces are also popular amongst walkers and climbers, who all put a tremendous strain upon the knee.

As we approach the Winter Sports season, it is more important than ever to make sure that you have the correct protection against potential injury, or if you already suffer, then to be certain that you have an adequate and appropriate brace in order to prevent the worsening of an existing condition.

There are many different knee braces that are all designed to perform different jobs – some to assist the knee in doing its job, others to prevent the knee from performing certain functions, and others to off-load some of the forces to different parts of the knee, and it is vital that you ensure you have the correct brace for

whatever it is you plan to do, whether this is enjoying long winter walks through snow, ice or mud, or whether you are planning to venture off piste!

Make an appointment for a FREE CONSULTATION with one of our qualified and experienced orthotists, in order to
