This year, Pope Francis has called us to be a people of compassion and mercy. He is encouraging us to take the time and observe what is happening around us. The readings from Scripture this week focus on God’s compassion and love for us. In the first reading, we are reminded that we are not a people God forgets about. He doesn’t cast us

aside. Instead, he refers to us as His delight and people that he is proud of and happy with. In the second reading, Paul reminds us that we are united with God, but possess different gifts. The diversity of these gifts, gives us the opportunity to further the work and the mission of the Church. This enables us to serve the needs of others by using our talents and abilities we possess and sharing them in our community. In the Gospel, we hear the familiar passage of the Wedding at Cana, where Mary was attentive to the needs of the bride and groom and asked Jesus to supply them with more wine to avoid embarrassment and disaster. Mary exemplifies God’s tender compassion as Jesus responds by giving them the best wine to serve. How do we show compassion to one another? Are we willing to go the extra mile and help our neighbor? Today, the Lord asks us to be more expressive in our love and not be afraid to show it.

My thanks to the Advisory Council for sponsoring a delightful and enjoyable evening last Friday. Comedy Night was a success. The mixture of fun, laughter and camaraderie was over flowing. After all the anxieties and pressures of the Christmas season, it was a wonderful way to relax and enjoy one another. Thanks to Pat McGann and the other comedians for sharing their gift of laughter. It was a memorable and uplifting event.

I was informed last week that our adopted Seminarian, Oswald Avile, has decided to leave Mundelein Seminary at this time. I would ask you to keep him in your prayers. The discernment process can take many stages. Oswald is taking some time to decide which direction he should take in his life. We wish him well.

A reminder that the spring fundraiser is coming soon. The date is Sunday, April 17 at Gaelic Park. Raffle tickets are $50.00 and bullet tickets are 6 for $5.00. They are available at school and the Rectory. More information about the fundraiser is being sent to you in the mail and will be featured in future Sunday bulletins.

Have a good week.

God Bless,

As we begin the 2nd week of Ordinary time in the church calendar, think about Jesus’ extraordinary act at the wedding at Cana. What acts can you do this week that may be out of the ordinary? Some ideas may include spending some time in the Adoration chapel this week, helping an elderly neighbor with errands during these colder days, visiting a shut-in and actually spending some time talking with them, or saying grace before dinner with the whole family present.

NEW CAR IN YOUR FUTURE?

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is raffling off a brand new 2016 Pontiac Encore at the Friends of the Poor Benefit in April. So, if you’re thinking about a new car, why not take a chance on winning one for the mere cost of $25? After all, you don’t really want a new car before the winter clears out – you want that new car dent-free as long as possible! And, if you don’t win, it is a donation. Catch me in the back of church after masses or contact me at [email protected] . (Please note “raffle” in the heading so I don’t accidentally delete your message!) As always, thanks for your help!

Religious Education News Classes resume for the Saturday School of Religion students on Saturday, January 23, 2016. Saturday School parents are reminded that all tuition, fees are due Saturday, January 30, 2016.

Our Confirmation candidates wrote two topic reports in their preparation for the sacrament…

Here are some interesting excerpts from Topic Report 1:

…I am very glad that my parents had me baptized in the Catholic Church. I look to continue to keep my family involved in the Church as I move forward in my life.

…I love the comfort I feel when I am in church. I am proud to be part of it.

…I want to be a role model for other children who are starting new things.

…I have been put on this earth to make a difference in the world—to give my love to the less fortunate, instead of turning my head, to give my best everyday.

.…God has brought me to where I am today. I would be a shell of who I am without God.

….When I am older I am probably going to go to church more. As a kid I feel that it is harder to make it to Mass as often as older people due to games, practices and tournaments.

….Being thirteen can sometimes be hard, but God has helped me at the times it is hard.

…My brothers look up to me as a role model, so I make sure to make right choices so they know how to live a good life.

…I encourage my family, friends and classmates to go to church. Ever since I have convinced them to go to church, my friends and I have gotten into a big group and have gone to church every Sunday. These are some reasons I think God put me on earth. WELL SAID GRADE 8!

Queen of Martyrs Students and 8th Grade Girl Scouts Sponsor A Thanksgiving Food Drive

Queen of Martyrs students, faculty, and staff gathered together on November 20th for a Thanksgiving Prayer Service. Student Council members and 8th Grade Girl Scouts organized a Food Drive to benefit the Pro Labore Dei (for the Work of God) Food Pantry in Robbins and the Pilgrim Faith Food Pantry in Oak Lawn. Ann Signorelli, Director of the Pro Labore Food Pantry was on hand to discuss her ministry and the importance of helping those in need. Baskets of various types of bread were brought to the Altar representing the different types of bread that would be shared at Thanksgiving dinners. Rye bread, rice cakes, tortillas, cornbread, and unleavened bread were presented to remind students of the many cultures that make up The United Stated of America, and their struggles that helped to define the strong country we are today. The students prayed for their ancestors that came to America in search of freedom and the opportunity to practice their Faith. Food items including jars of Peanut Butter and boxes of Pasta were donated to the Food Pantries to help feed numerous families. The students were reminded how fortunate they are and were grateful for the opportunity to help others.
