As we listen to the Scripture readings this weekend, we are reminded not to worry or be anxious in life. As we realize, that is “easier said than done.” It’s difficult not to worry. There is always something to be anxious about. If it’s not the kids, it’s the house, or the car or the aging parents or the job. How can we find the time to be calm in the situations we sometimes find ourselves in? St. Paul, in the second reading, suggests we find time

to pray and dialogue with God. It doesn’t have to be a long block of time. It doesn’t have to be completed. Maybe it’s thinking about God getting up in the morning, or when we are running errands or driving to work. Maybe it’s gathering together before we sit down to eat a meal, or thanking God before we go to sleep. Prayer is giving us the time to allow God’s peace to enter our hearts and minds and give us the opportunity to deal and reflect upon the anxieties we face every day of our lives. It may not be the answer to everything we seek, but it’s something worth thinking about and giving it a try.

I am happy to announce, that I have hired a new Operations Manager to our staff to work on the budget and finance areas of the parish. Her name is Mrs. Cynthia (Cindy) Cochran. This is a part time position. Cindy will be with us two days a week on Mondays and Wednesdays. I am looking forward to working with her as she joins our staff and parish community.

Here is an update on our annual Catholic Appeal collection. Our goal was to reach $32,839.26. The amount pledged from the parish was $43,034.00. The amount paid so far is $37,649.00. The balance due is $5,385.00. If you have not finished paying your pledge, I would encourage you to do so. Since we have reached our goal, we will be receiving a rebate back from the Archdiocese. Let’s see if you can pay off our remaining balance. Thanks for your support in this collection.

In my thank you last week, I overlooked the support of Mr. Chad Preabt and the Holy Name with the Wheel and Mrs. Andrea Gertonson and the Altar & Rosary who provided refreshments after the Mass.

Next Sunday at the 9:30am Mass, our 8th grade and 2nd grade students from School and Religious Education will be attending the Mass of Enrollment. As they begin the process of preparing to receive the Sacraments of Reconciliation, Eucharist and Confirmation, I ask you to keep them and their families in your prayers.

Have a good week.

God Bless,

More words of wisdom this week from St. Vincent de Paul: “Extend mercy toward others, so that there is no one in need whom we meet without helping. For what hope is there for us if God should withdraw mercy from us?” Who may need your mercy and help this week?

Mission Trip 2017 All You Need Is Love

“Coming to Harlan is probably the BEST part of my summer for the past three years. I have learned to appreciate the little things more than I used too. Even though Harlan will always be in my heart, it keeps becoming a bigger piece of it every year. From the people of Harlan to my mission trip team, I have expanded my horizons with my faith and personality.

Once you take a step back and realize that so MANY PEOPLE CARE about you with just a small conversation YOU WILL ALWAYS BE LOVED. A simple ‘hello’ and you can share your love as they give their love back. ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE.” –Olivia

THANK YOU FOR YOUR GENEROSITY We would like to thank everyone that donated to our

Queen of Martyrs Students Celebrate Spirit Week

Students and teachers enjoyed a week filled with fun themes in anticipation of Homecoming. Each day of the week was designated with a different theme including “Aloha Day” where tropical clothing was the attire for the day. The students also enjoyed crazy sock day on Tuesday, “Wacky Tacky Wednesday” which included wacky clothing as the theme of the day. Thursday found students and teachers dressing as their favorite “Super Hero”. Friday was dedicated to Wildcat Pride, students and teachers wore their favorite Martyrs T-shirts and sports uniforms. The week ended with a Pep Rally. Students cheered on the members of all the Martyrs Fall sports teams. The competitive cheerleaders, the football cheerleaders and the Pee-Wee cheerleaders performed for parents, students, and staff.

Queen of Martyrs will continue to participate in The Baby Bottle Project bene iting The Women’s Centers of Greater Chicagoland.
