Fr. Marty’s Musings Epiphany celebrates the manifestation of God’s love to the entire world. The revelation of God’s love is a theophany, or vision of God, and his goodness is revealed beyond Bethlehem and Nazareth. Epiphany this year falls on January 5—the traditional twelfth day of Christmas. Christmas crèches usually include three Magi, although they could have arrived to Bethlehem months after Jesus’ birth—Matthew records their arrival to a house. The Magi (Matthew does not mention the number) represent that the Good News of Christ’s birth reached beyond the Holy Land. They have also come to reflect the diversity of humanity. An Epiphany ritual marks the front door lintel with blessed chalk to write “20+C+M+B+20.” We ask God to bless all who enter our homes this year. From at least the seventh century, the letters stand for the traditional names of the magi: Caspar (or Gaspar), Melchior, and Balthasar. It also proclaims “Christus mansionem benedicat” or “May Christ bless this house.”

The crosses symbolize the meeting of Christ and the Magi. The inscription is made above the front door, so that all who pass through may enjoy God’s grace. January comes from the Roman god Janus, the doorkeeper of myth and patron of the beginning and end of things. The Epiphany blessing adds a Christian dimension to the traditional observance of the first month. The inscription is made of chalk, taken from the earth, symbolic of the human nature of the Son of God.

Thank you to all who helped to make Christmas and its season a joyful celebration. The season formally ends next Sunday with the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. Special thanks go to the Art and Environment volunteers who worked hard and creatively to prepare our church for Christmas. And thank you for your contributions through the Christmas flowers envelope to help fill our church with the symbols of the Christmas season.

Fr. Marty Marren

Epiphany Lintel Marking

L: Peace be to this home ad to all who we welcome here.

R: A reading from Proverbs (Proverbs 24:3-4): By wisdom is a house built, by understanding is it made firm; And by knowledge are its rooms filled with every precious and pleasing possession.

L: Let us pray: Gracious God, as a star once guided magi to the infant Jesus, so enable us to be your light in the world; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

A: Amen.

Inscribe the lintel with the inscription: 20 + C + M + B + 20

R: A reading from Isaiah (Isaiah 32:17-18): Justice will bring about peace; right will produce calm and security. My people will live in peaceful country, in secure dwellings and quiet resting places.

Participants may join hands in prayer. L: Let us pray:

O Blessed Trinity — God our Father, Jesus his beloved Son, and the Holy Spirit—hear the intercessions of the blessed Magi and of all the saints on our behalf. We call on you to dedicate our home to you. Make it a dwelling place of mercy and peace. Reveal to all who pass through the doorways of our home your presence within their hearts. Bless their coming in, and their going out. Watch over them, wherever they may journey. Amen.

A: Our Father…

L: May the Lord watch over all who pass through this door. May he bless this home and all it shelters. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

A: Amen.

2020 January 8 & 22

Today we celebrate the feast of the Epiphany – sometimes also referred to as the feast of the Three Kings. An epiphany is a great revelation – the wise men followed the star to pay homage to the Christ child they had heard so much about. How have you welcomed Christ into your life this holiday season? How will you continue to share the light of Christ with those around you as we begin a new year?

The Joy of Christmas at Queen of Martyrs School

Students helped spread Holiday Cheer and experienced the sights and sounds of Christmas at the many spirited events held at Queen of Martyrs School. The Mother McAuley Show Choir came to school and sang beautiful Christmas Carols as well as wonderful dance numbers. The 5th Grade Girl Scouts made tasty gingerbread houses with the help of their leaders. They enjoyed the comradery of their festive time spent together. The preschoolers observed a science experiment involving a chemical reaction between vinegar, baking soda, and candy canes. The students were excited to watch the candy canes disinte-grate! The 8th Grade students volun-teered to help pack up the gifts for the organizations from our Parish Sharing Tree! Our students took the opportunity to share their time and talent to help others, what a great gift to celebrate Jesus’ Birthday! Just a few of many exciting events that took place over the busy Holiday Season!

The students are excited to be on Christmas Break and are ready to return for more learning and fun in the New Year! Queen of Martyrs School wishes everyone a very Happy and Healthy New Year!

St. Peregrine Novena at

St. Catherine of Alexandria St. Peregrine is the patron saint for persons suffering from illnesses of all types in particular cancer. Saint Peregrine was healed of a cancerous ulcer on his leg which was considered beyond saving. The fame of this event in 1325 spread rapidly round the western Church.

Christians, and especially the sick, began to invoke his name and seek his intercession for the relief of their suffering and even for a cure from sickness. The canonization of St. Peregrine in 1726 increased people’s devotion to him which spread to the universal Church.

St. Catherine of Alexandria will begin offering a novena to St. Peregrine at 7p.m. in the church. The novena will be held for 9 Mondays. All are welcome to participate. The dates are below:
