QUEEN OF MARTYRS CHURCH

Come, all you who labor and are burdened,

and I will give you rest

—Matthew 11:25-30

Since the time of his election, Pope Francis has been a beacon of hope for the Church. He practices what he preaches. He continues to call us to be a people of service, love and humility. The readings from Scripture this weekend reflect the importance of a

proper disposition of faith. We live in a world of uncertainty. We don’t know what the future holds for us. We ponder and wonder how our life will unfold. Jesus lived in a similar kind of world. The pagans resorted to worshipping many gods, the Pharisees were bound to strictly following the law, and the Sadducees held the wealth in the Temple. Jesus realized that the message he brought was to be shared and directed to the children who possess the qualities of being respectful, trusting and innocent. The mysteries of the Kingdom are found in people who are kind, loving and compassionate. The powerful and the learned did not understand what Jesus’ message meant. They were too caught up in themselves to make a difference. Instead, Jesus focused on the children and little ones who provided hope and reassurance for the future in living out God’s word.

A reminder that the raffle tickets for Martyrsfest are available for purchase at the Rectory for $50.00 each. It’s never too early to buy your ticket. I am encouraging everyone to support this parish event. The monies collected help to balance the budget as well as support the school and the parish.

I am grateful for all those who participated in getting their picture taken for the Parish Directory. I am appreciative to Fr. Kevin and his committee for all the time and effort put in to make the pictoral directory a reality. I’m looking forward to the finished project.

If you haven’t made your commitment to the Capital Campaign, you still have time to do so. This campaign is calling on all of us to do our part. The monies collected benefit all of us who use the parish facilities. Continue to help make this campaign a success by helping us to reach our goal.

If anyone is looking to volunteering their time, we are still in need of a 3rd and 5th grade catechist for the Saturday School of Religion Program. If you are interested, call me at the Rectory.

Have a good week.

God Bless,

Queen of Martyrs Pre-Kindergarten Students Participate in the “Learn Not To Burn Program”

Lieutenant Ed Dunne from the Evergreen Park Fire Department shared Fire Safety tips with Queen of Martyrs Pre-Kindergarten class. Lieutenant Dunne visited the Queen of Martyrs Pre-Kindergarten classroom on eight different occasions to speak with the students and teach them how to stay safe. Fireman Ed spoke to the children about the danger found in household chemicals, irons, cooking stoves, matches, lighters, fireplaces and outdoor wood burners. The children learned the importance of helping their families

to create escape plans in the event of a house fire and how to “Stop, Drop, and Roll”. Fireman Ed wore his full fire fighting gear to show the children how a firefighter would look like when fighting a fire and reminded the children that they should never hide in a closet or under a bed in the event of a fire in their home. The children also learned the importance of crawling under the smoke of a fire and feeling a door to make sure that it is not hot before opening it to escape a fire. The students looked forward to Fireman Ed’s visit’s and learned many helpful ideas to keep safe and be aware. The children finished the “Learn Not To Burn Program” by taking a Field Trip to the Evergreen Park Firehouse. The Pre-Kindergarten students toured the Fire House, made Fire Safety buttons, climbed into a Fire Engine, and even used a fire hose. The students especially enjoyed eating a snack at the Firehouse. Thank you to Lieutenant Dunne for teaching the children so much about fire safety and for bringing this special Program to Queen of Martyrs School!
