Baptisms are wonderful occasions to celebrate. For many parents, its an opportunity for family members and friends to gather and welcome the newborn child. Baptisms also mark the beginning of the baby’s spiritual journey with the Lord in their life. Today, we celebrate the Baptism of Jesus as he was baptized by John the Baptist. It’s another

occasion for God to present His Son to the world. We are reminded today of how much God loved His Son and was pleased with Him. From this point on, the Holy Spirit would guide and direct Jesus in his ministry. Parents often wonder what their child will be when they grow up. What career path will they take? Sometimes the future is predictable like becoming a policeman, firefighter, teacher or nurse. Other times there maybe a few surprises along the way like entering religious life as a brother or sister or becoming a missionary or priest. Baptisms help to begin that journey. What do you remember from your baptism? How did your Baptism help to define you as a son or daughter of the Lord? Baptisms remind us of how special we are to our parents and to God. We are given the opportunity to grow in our relationship with our family and with God. It gives us time to show how proud they can be of us.

I want to take this opportunity to congratulate Mr. Gerald Refermat who will be receiving the Christifideles Award this afternoon at Holy Name Cathedral. This prestigious award is given to one lay person or couple who have demonstrated faithfulness and dedication to ministry. His commitment and generous time in helping to run Bingo every week and ushering the 4:00pm Mass on Saturday is a wonderful example of his support to our parish community.

Don’t forget that this Friday, the Parent Advisory organization is sponsoring Comedy Night in Vitha Hall featuring Pat McGann. A great opportunity to enjoy some laughs with family and friends.

Thanks to Altar & Rosary Society for sponsoring the Living Rosary last Friday. It always is a special celebration that is spiritual and uplifting at the beginning of a new year. I am grateful for all who came and participated in the event.

Have a good week.

God Bless,

Have your resolutions for the New Year gone by the wayside already? Here’s a quick idea for a simple resolution that can actually make it through the year: Plan to do one random act of kindness each day. It could be as simple as adding an extra dollar in the collection basket, dropping change in the poor box, donating clothing you no longer use, saying hello to a stranger during your normal day, stopping by to spend some time with a shut-in, or a nice compliment to someone. You might be surprised at how good you’ll feel about yourself by this time next year!

QM Holy Name Society News... Here is a reminder on our upcoming National Championship night coming up on Monday January 11th in Vitha Hall at 7:00. We will have Alabama vs. Clemson up on the big screen and it should be a great game this year. The meal will be pizza and wings, beverages provided as always. Strip Cards, Split the Pot etc. will be going around as well. We will be drawing the winner of this year's Blackhawks Raffle at the 11th meeting. As reminder, the winner takes home 4 front row seats, a parking pass and $2,000 cash. I want to personally thank you all for your efforts as we are nearly sold out on this, there may be one or two tickets still available so if you want one speak quickly, I don't think we will have any for sale the night off as it will likely be completely sold out by then. We are going to attempt to have a secondary raffle the night off for a flat screen tv. I don't have all the details on tv size etc. however all Blackhawks Raffle stubs that did not win the grand prize will be re-entered and the winner must be present at the event to take home the tv. I hope this encourages some of you to get off the couch and come out and enjoy the game with us.

Religious Education News Happy New Year from the Religious Education Center!

Saturday School of Religion classes will not meet on Saturday, January 16 due to the Martin Luther King weekend. Classes resume on January 23 at 9:30 AM Continuing with the theme of GO for this school year…we would like to share with you some responses from our Confirmation candidates after following their service experiences….GO and SERVE others. …doing the smallest things could impact someone’s life greatly. …I saw a homeless woman crying over the food we gave her. I loved helping and will do it again. …I felt honored to help my cousin. She did not have to work alone. …I felt the best after the Ronald McDonald House because those families are suffering a lot. …I felt so good about what I was doing that he didn’t even seem like work. …It was good knowing that I was making someone’s day a little bit easier. …It was a lot of work and I was tired. …By putting out the Bingo chairs, I helped out janitor so he didn’t to do all the work himself. …I loved seeing the families’ faces when they saw us walk in and they knew we were cooking for them. …I felt good when I came home from Mercy Circle because I was doing something for the Church. …I felt there was a good person inside me who was trying to be successful. …The Park Lawn experience was great and I look forward to getting there again to collect for those in need. …I had a blast helping Mr. Kenny this summer and am grateful to have been part of it. …I still think about the people I helped. Thank you to all our Confirmation candidates…keep up the good works of service!

“Jesus, be with me today in everything I do and say.”

Our family would like thank everyone for all the thoughts and prayers with respect to our unexpected loss of Paul. We sincerely appreciate all the kindness and generosity during this difficult time and through-out the holiday season.

Queen of Martyrs School Observes “Veterans Day”

The students in Mrs. Biszewski’s and Mrs. Kettering’s 7th Grade classes took up a collection for a student in their class whose dad is on active duty in the Air Force Reserves. He is currently stationed in South Africa. The students wanted to honor him for his service to our country. The money collected was given to the family to use to go to dinner on Veteran’s Day and celebrate their dad and husband. The family was truly appreciative of the gesture!

Students in all grades made projects to reflect on the sacrifice made by the men and women in all phases of the military. Students also made cards for Veterans in the area. Queen of Martyrs 8th Grade teacher, Mrs. Pat Pekelnicky, invited her husband Dave, a Vietnam War Veteran, to speak to her class about his experience in Vietnam. The students asked great questions as Mr. Pekelnicky shared facts about historical events that occurred during the Vietnam War

Queen of Martyrs Spanish and Music Teacher, Ms. Jessica Therriault, a member of the Army Reserves, played the French Horn in a free Veteran’s Day Concert in Deerfield. Students and families were invited to attend to listen to an evening of Patriotic Music.

Queen of Martyrs School is grateful for all the men and women in our military who make great sacrifices to help keep America Strong!
