One of the highlights of the Christmas Season is receiving cards and letters from people we have known for years. They may be people with whom we have had long relationships with, people from the past, or people we have recently grown close to. Sometimes, the letters allow us to catch up on news that has occurred during the past year or letters that are sent to express a person’s best wishes. Some letters may ask us how or what is happening in our life. Sometimes letters offer us gratitude or

appreciation for something we may have done. Letters and cards that we receive help us to clarify or understand where people are at or what they are doing in their life.

The Scripture Readings today help us to understand who Jesus is through the person of John the Baptist. Many thought that John was the Messiah that they were waiting for. Today, he makes it clear that it is not he, but some one greater than him, namely Jesus. He refers to him as the “Lamb of God” and the “Son of God”. The Scripture Readings remind us that God has created us and that we have a special place in God’s plan. We are called to answer the question: Who are you? The question asks us to reflect on where do we stand in relationship to God? The meaning of our lives depends on how we answer. The response we give will certainly determine who we are and where we stand when it comes to answering God’s call in our lives.

This weekend, we celebrate the life of a man who promoted peace and harmony for all people. The words and actions of Dr. Martin Luther King continue to resonate and call us to be a people who work together for all. The task is not easy, the struggles and challenges remain as we continue to keep looking for solutions to break down the barriers of hatred and prejudice. The biggest challenge is for us not to give up.

This week, we also experience new leadership in our country with a new president. We pray that as transition takes place, we will continue to unite as a nation and country in respecting all people.

Next Sunday, at the 9:30AM Mass, our 5th grade students from School and Saturday School of Religion will be celebrating our Family Mass for the month of January. All are welcome to join us for this celebration.

Our Spring Fundraiser is fast approaching. Tickets for the dinner and raffle will be available for purchase after all the Masses this weekend. Please reserve the date of March 26 at Gaelic Park.

A reminder that the Family & School Association is sponsoring Comedy Night this Friday in Vitha Hall beginning at 7:00PM. Hope to see you there!

Have a good week.

God Bless,

OLYMPICS

“This being my first year on the Mission Trip, I didn’t really know what to expect. I knew it would be a great experience for me and a chance for me to become closer to God. The people who I was around were great and made this trip unforgetta-ble. From the work to the people and just the atmosphere, it was amazing. I feel Harlan has made me appreciate the little

things in life because they are things that matter the most. God really guided me to make new friendships. I will never forget my first year in Harlan and the people whom I spent it with. Hopefully next year I will be able to come again and make even more memories.”- Matt

The Magic of Christmas Queen of Martyrs School

Many special events took place at Q of M School over the Christmas Season. Students participated in the Queen of Martyrs Women’s Ministry Advent Reflection Stations. The students “Followed the Star and Walked through Advent”. Students read the Bible verse and

reflection sheet at each station. They took a moment to relax in prayerful meditation. Faculty and students were grateful for the opportunity to renew their friendship with Jesus as they walked through the wonderfully arranged Advent Reflection Stations.

Kindergarten Student Monica and her Preschool sister Caroline invited their Papa to their classrooms to play his guitar and sing Christmas Carols with the Primary students. Mr. Konieczny is a retired CPS Music Teacher. His joyful music really filled the students with Christmas Spirit! The Pre-K students took the opportunity to visit the Nativity Scene in our beautifully decorated church. The children wondered at

the bright lights and the statue of Baby Jesus as they discussed the First Christmas. Wonderful memories were created during this most Holy Season!
