QUEEN OF MARTYRS CHURCH

Evergreen Park, Illinois

20th Sunday in Ordinary Time August 17, 2014

Recognizing the Canaanite woman’s great faith, Jesus told her,

“It shall be done as you wish” —Matthew 15:21-28

Welcome to the 2014—2015 School Year! May God Bless all the students, their parents and

their teachers as we enter a new school year!

The readings from Scripture focus on faithful foreigners, outsiders, who seek refuge in the Lord. In our society today, many of us look at foreigners or newer immigrants and say, “They all should be speaking English”. We forget that America is looked upon as a

melting pot for people. When European immigrants were coming over, each group had its own churches. Neighbor-hoods were identified by the people and nationalities they represented. Many churches were established from German, Italian or Polish communities. Faith was the key element in communities honoring a place to worship while respecting and keeping the traditions of their cultures together. Today, we see a similar process happening in the Hispanic communities. Jesus faced the same kind of challenges in his ministry. The Scripture readings remind us of the importance of focusing on what unites us rather than what divides us. It is our faith in Jesus Christ. It is through our faith that we recognize the foreigner as our neighbor. Where do we stand on this issue? What do we need to do to change and make this happen for ourselves? For our parish? With some patience and determination on our part, by following the example of Jesus. We can accomplish this task, of being a community that worships together as one.

It’s hard to believe, but school begins this week. Monday, August 18 is Welcome Back Day. This event is from 3:30 until 6:30PM in Vitha Hall. All families are asked to come during this time to pick up and return important information related to the coming school year.

Classes begin this Wednesday, August 20th for all students Pre-K through 8th grade. We welcome back our teachers and staff from their summer break . In addition to our new principal, Mr. Ted Morgan, we welcome Dina Egan, Bill Longevan, and Jacqueline Lang to our staff. My prayer is that this will be a year for our children to achieve academic success along with the help of our teachers and staff to reach this goal.

Have a good week.

God Bless,

"My whole life all I've wanted to do is help people, I've wri en endless essays and talks about how my life will mean something the moment I help someone. Harlan gave me the opportunity to physically achieve my life goal

and I couldn't be more grateful for that amazing opportunity. The en re week of roofing and siding in the heat and rain, I was beyond happy because I knew I was helping someone in need. In a way Harlan helped me; Harlan helped me see that if I give a li le bit of myself I can make a huge difference in someone's life and it means the world and more to me to know that. If I had the chance to go back to Harlan and help more people, I would drop everything in a heartbeat to go." ~ Mady

Queen of Martyrs Students Celebrate Summer!

On June 6th, Faculty and Students gathered together for Mass to give thanks for a wonderful school year. Father Ed spoke to the student body to remind them to keep safe during their Summer Break and to always keep Jesus close to their hearts. Each Grade level had the opportunity to speak of an outstanding event that took place over the course of the school year. Students recounted the many service projects that they were involved in and were grateful for the sense of responsibility and accomplishment that completing the project gave them. The students are looking forward to the new school year and the wonderful opportunities that a new beginning always brings. We welcome our new principal, Mr. Ted Morgan and wish him much success. Welcome Back Day takes place on Monday, August 18th, 3:30 pm to 6:30 pm

First Day of School, Wednesday, August 20th,2014, 7:50 am to 11:30 am.

The 6th Annual Sully Shuffle for Parkinson’s disease research, a 5K run and 3K walk is scheduled to take place Sunday, September 14, 2014. The Sully

Shuffle namesake is lifelong Oak Lawn resident and retired Oak Lawn Community High School teacher, Skip Sullivan. Skip recently retired from being the Assistant Varsity Girls Basketball Coach. He was also an Assistant Football, Golf and Head Varsity Baseball Coach during his tenure at OLCHS. He has been fighting Parkinson’s disease for the past 10 years. His positive attitude and eternal optimism continues to inspire many.

We are excited to announce that we have a new route this year—the 5K run is a Certified Course (IL-14003-NM)! We are, therefore, anticipating an even great number of participants for this year's event.

We are grateful for the support and dedication from our com-munity and the commitment of our participants. We are proud to have donated almost $115,000 over the last 5 years to the American Parkinson Disease Association Midwest Chapter to fund PD research. The generosity shown by our community in the past has been overwhelming.

Working together we can help find a cure!
