ChildhoodVictoria was the daughter of Prince Edward, Duke of Kent and Strathearn and Princess Victoria of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld, a german-born lady.

At birth, Victoria was fifth in the line of succession after her father and his three older brothers.

She was baptised Alexandrina, after one of her godparents, Emperor of Russia, and Victoria after her mother. The princess was raised under close supervision by her mother, largely isolated from other children.

Victoria later described her childhood as

“rather melancholy”.

Early adulthoodBy the age of 18, all the heirs to the throne were dead, so she was crowned Queen of England on June 28th 1838. She became the first sovereign to take up residence at Buckingham Palace.

At first, documents described her as Alexandrina Victoria, but her first name was withdrawn at her own wish.

In 1840, at the age of 21, she married her first cousin, Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gota.

Several men attempted to assassinate her but

fortunately never succeeded.

The EmpireHer reign of 63 years, 7 months and 2 days. which is longer than that of any British monarch and the longest of any female monarch in history, is known as the Victorian era.

It was a period of industrial, cultural, political, scientific, and military development within the United Kingdom, and was marked by a great expansion of the British Empire, which had become the largest Empire ever.

In 1876 Victoria was also declared Empress of India.

Education in nineteenth-century England was not equal - not between the sexes, nor between the classes.

The industrial revolution transformed Great Britain, between 1750 and 1830, from a largely rural population to a town-centered society.

The end of the Victorian AgeQueen Victoria died on Tuesday 22nd Juanuary 1901 at the age of 81, in the Isle of Wight.

The world that Queen Victoria left behind at her death was a far different place than when she had begun her reign. On her death, her son Edward took over, leading to the Edwardian Age - an age that promised to be equally glorious, but whose promise was snuffed out by the horrors of World War 1, only 13 years later.
