Climate Change and Megafauna in the Tropics 2.

Detail: QM Geosciences team will excavate, date and analyse the unique fossil assemblage preserved in Colosseum Chamber, Mt Etna, Rockhampton region. This fossil site contains hundreds of thousands of fossils of small fauna, including small mammals, reptiles, frogs, birds, and snails spanning the last 50,000 years. This project will provide the crucial deep-time knowledge of the biodiversity of semi-evergreen vine thicket, dry rainforest and cavernous ecosystems, which are experiencing unprecedented environmental degradation. Knowledge of such prehistoric records provides unique insights into how climate has impacted upon and shaped our terrestrial ecosystems, and allows us to better predict the effects of future climate change. Julien and Scott visited the site in September, to re-establish contact with the caves’ owners and collect preliminary charcoal for U-series dating.

Detail: This project utilises diverse phylogenetic, biogeographical and isotopic analyses to investigate factors responsible for past speciation, dispersal and extinction dynamics (e.g. tempo of evolution, divergence timing and climate change) in Australian Mesozoic biotas. The Australian mid-Cretaceous continentalrecordisparticularlysignificantbecauseit spans a poorly known stratigraphic interval and is associated with an ancient high-latitude zone periodically subject to near freezing conditions. Intensivepalaeontologicalresearchwillbenefitlocalcommunities by promoting regional museum tourism and directly creating jobs; this encourages fossil resources to be viewed as valuable natural assets to be responsibly managed for the future.
