Central Queens is home to the most diverse demographic makeup in all of New York City and perhaps the world. The decommissioned LIRR infrastructure serves as a dynamic medium for social interaction, food production, environmental remediation, education and local economic development initiatives. Our recommendation emphasizes urban agriculture, active design, physical access, multi-modal transportation, wa-ter, renewable energy, and waste management systems. Community participation via outreach will bring these interventions to life.
For the Ozone Park Station, we propose the Sustainable Living Institute, which is a learn+work cooperative that includes a community kitchen with cooking classes, sustainable technology classes and flexible space for health and fitness activities. Local schools and organizations can integrate educational and workforce development into their curricula in tandem with the evolving food and transportation facilities.
