1. E L I S E O G D E N MEDIA MUSIC MAGAZINE ANALYSIS 2. FRONT COVER SIMILARITIES 3. FRONT COVER DIFFERENCES 4. FRONT COVER DEVELOPMENT Using a white background instead of yellow like Q Using less writing but having the writing at a larger scale Use of the Special In a different font gives it the fun style and informs the reader its exclusive Aligning the text to the right, creates a simplistic yet professional feel to the cover lines First name in larger text- interests the reader, one of the first things theyd read as it looks simplistic and doesn'tt include a lot of detail Written in bold black implies its an initial part of the magazine Further information about the cover lines, without including quotes 5. FINAL DEVELOPMENTS Whilst doing my evaluation, I decided to make some drastic changes to my front cover. I have re- arranged a lot of the things which were on the cover at first and I have also got rid of some things too. I wanted my cover to look very simple yet not look too pop, so using my colour rule I have added some features other indie magazines use like the way text is formatted and placed. 6. HERES THE OLD AND NEW COVER: 7. MORE DEVELOPMENT Using the 3 colour choice, and placing a rectangle box at the top of the page as a boarder- and not on my logo like Q does. I added this convention because It shows the audience more of what is in my magazine. I used this convention because I like how its on other magazines like NME. Using different artists/bands above the masthead Always using the featured artists name in a bold font in the middle of the cover which draws needed attention to it 8. FRONT COVER CHALLENGES Logo goes in front of artists head, the logo is different in every issue, for example, the one with peace (the band) the logo is simple to suit the band, using warm colours, which indicates that the band are summery Logo behind artist head showing that he is the main person to read about inside the magazine, and his fierce look suits the colours. Colours are a vital part of a magazine, they determine the genre and reveal who the artist(s) are. For example, Matt is energetic because of the yellow and red used in the cover lines, Peace the band are laid back as proved by their band name, and the colours used give a chilled out impression. 9. Nothing like this is used on my cover because I wanted all of the information on Matt Birch to be in the white arrowed box because then its not covering the whole cover which makes it look untidy. I wanted my front cover to be neat yet have my genre pulled through. Rock type clothing- I wanted Matt to wear his hoodie and his pick necklace with his skull t-shirt because It brings out the rock/indie genre look which tells the audience that he is musically talented (as hinted by the necklace- and looks very into his music because of it) Q use plus! to pull the audiences eye towards it, using a red font because it is the only touch of red out of the writing in the bottom right, and red is a pop out colour which all attention gets to, the use of red links to their logo too. 10. CONTENTS PAGE SIMILARITIES 11. CONTENTS PAGE DIFFERENCES 12. CONTENTS PAGE DEVELOPMENT Using the masthead logo on the page A girl artist on contents- similar pose except my model is looking at the reader, it gives a welcoming/friendly approach to the audience 2 extra pictures used on the contents like Q 13. CONTENTS PAGE CHALLENGES Red boarder behind the model 14. DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD SIMILARITIES Large picture of artist which fills most of the page, also a box like the Q magazines double page spread which features something irrelevant to the actual story on the page. 15. MORE SIMILARITIES Use of guitar wires to spell boy meets world, I wanted to use this at first but create a pullout quote with microphone wire- but Photoshop is tricky! Using the microphone and wire to go behind text as if the story is talking into the microphone. 16. DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD DIFFERENCES This is a convention I wanted to add to the double page spread because I have seen it in another double page, It is the songs Matt wants to influence people to listen to Smokey effect used in the corner of the page; a good effect to suit the band 17. DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD DEVELOPMENT Using a caption and the photographers name- this sometimes isnt needed 18. DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD CHALLENGES It use the bands name and their set list from the show I went to, this is a contrast to the Q double page spread because the do not use it Spreading the picture across the page- Q do this but have it smaller and starting from the left hand corner 19. As you can see In the original picture, Matt was stood in the opposite direction and his guitar was blue. I wanted to change the guitar red because It would suit my magazine more as my 3 colour rule was Red, Black and Yellow. This was tricky as I had to use the lasso tool which I had never used before, and using the contrast and saturation options, I changed the colours.
