How does my media product represent particular social groups?

REPRESENTATION OF TEENAGE

GIRLS IN MAGAZINES

Here are a selection of images that you would expect to find in the genre of magazine I made. As you can see the images are sexual and there is a lot of flesh on show, the images also imply the girl next door and they also connote money and sex. In my images I did not want to represent money or sex because I think that it would not be acceptable with my audiences age. Therefore my images keep to a minimum of sexuality and I represent teenagers as innocent and friendly.

Page 3: Question 2

Although here you can see that this image could potentially connote sexuality because the girls are blowing a kiss. I think the content in which I have used it represents fun and having a good time with your friends.

In this image the girls do not have clothes that show their flesh very much. They are wearing jeans and plain tops which does not show money, therefore in this image I am not following the trend of representing women in a sexual way but in a innocent non sexual way.

DOMINANT IDEOLOGY EMERGENT IDEOLOGY

Women were seen to be a house wife and that their

husband should go to work and earn money. They

were seen as an object of sexual affection and they were to have children and look after them full time.

Emergent ideology is a new idea in society. For example in

my magazine I represent women/girls as being

successful and confident. This is something that has

developed for many years now, and women are

becoming more powerful and more successful.

This image represents young women in a powerful way,

the emergent ideology is that they are in control and they are their own person, they

do not obey men. Their facial expression is strong and this

forces the new emergent ideology.

Page 5: Question 2

The colours I have used such as pink, bight green, yellow and turquoise all reinforce the stereotypical young teenage girls who love all these colours.

The stories which are included in magazine also force this stereotypical view that my audience is interested in relationships, make up dance and shopping.

Page 6: Question 2

In my magazine I have represented men as an object of desire. For example in this title the girls want to see posters of their crush this means that women have power over men because the man is being exposed to the women, not the other way round. This challenged dominant ideology.

Here the man is seen as bad, he has cheated on his girlfriend therefore he is seen as being a liar and unfaithful to his girlfriend, this reinforces the idea that men cheat not women. This reinforces the idea that men are sexual predators not women

REPRESENTATION OF MEN IN MY MAGAZINEI only have 2 pieces in my magazine which involve men. This means that I have represented men as not being important. The 2 pieces in which they are included show men as an object of desire or as cheaters.

LANGUAGEHere are some examples of the type of language I have used to represent social groups. The language is slang and I have also used abbreviations (“omg”) similar to text language which is what the age of my audience would recognise.

I have communicated a young female social groups my using words like “gorjj” and “goss”. These are all the type of lexis that the particular social group I have represented would recognise.
