Question 2 How does the media product represent particular social groups?
Transcript
Page 2: Question 2

Fans of the magazine content, Male & Female and Age The male and female social group I am targeting is Indie music lovers aged 16-30. I chose this age range due to when you are 16 you can legally get a job meaning they have more of a spending power than anyone under this age. They would then be able to afford my magazine as well as being able to attend gigs and festivals. My media product represents the Indie genre through the images, colour scheme and codes and conventions that I have used. By using this colour scheme I feel it represents my target audience well. To target both male and female I started to use a unisex colour scheme which was blue, red, black, white and grey. I felt that this would be a suitable set of colours to uses as neither is to dull or to suited to males or females. My colour scheme is bright white and by using these colours I think they are suited to portraying an indie magazine as from my research other indie magazines were bright and also had a similar colour scheme. I think these colours create a happy positive outlook making people feel happy when they look and read my magazine from the colours and conventions I have used. I carried this colour scheme out throughout my cover contents and DPS.

Religion and Ethnicity, Disability and Ability

I feel I have covered this social group as I have made my magazine as diverse as possible. By making sure my magazine is just about the music and making sure that the concerts and festivals and things advertised in my magazine can cater for any ability or disability and that there is no sexism or racism within or connected to my magazine.

Page 4: Question 2

The images on my magazine are bright and the people in my images are all young adults. My cover page shows an image with direct mode of address where she has a guitar which links in with my Indie theme and she also has more of a straight face linking in with my Indie theme as if she has smiled or been more upbeat in the picture I think my particular social group target would get a bit lost and it would loose its Indie vibe.My contents page pictures are of different bands, in the top right picture it is bright with different colours showing. The bottom picture is more of greys blacks and white tones and my middle picture is quite murky browns with some standout lighting. I think that all these pictures fit in well with my Indie theme and suit the social group I am trying to attract. The images I have used are all quite clear which I think helps the reader to connect with the picture. Having interesting pictures is what will initially draw the audience in so I felt that I needed to have some strong images to do this. I think that my images show a positive outlook which Ihope will draw in and attract the target audience I am aiming to.

Addressing different social groups with particular conventions on my magazine

Page 5: Question 2

How have I targeted particular social groups? I feel that the article that I created though conducting an interview gives my target audience and all social groups an insight in to a new and exciting band. I think this is what magazines should be about all about the exciting new music which I think is what the Indie genre is all about. People who are interested in Indie music are more the people who look at everyone equally and who are a bit different which I think makes the people of the Indie genre more understanding and open to new things such as new artists and bands. The article on my DPS is asking all about how the leader singer of the band started his interest in music and talks about because they are a new band how other new bands should feel and act and saying that’s its ok to be scared or nervous but that no one will judge you and if they do they couldn’t probably do any better. This also links in to how I diverse I wanted my magazine to be to make sure that people who read it would also feel equal and more confident to achieve their dream as well.
