Question 2: how does your media product represent particular social groups?

Page 2: Question 2

Front page: CameraworkBy using the camera work I have used a mid shot to not only show his body language, but also his facial expression which is neutral. He is holding his collar, which makes him look a bit older and more mature. I have used a mid shot to show the audience what he is wearing, which he is wearing a smart buttoned shirt with a collar to show him to be older and more mature, this is quite unsterotypical as he is young and younger people are seen as more immature and juvenile, and as he is male they are more seen as quite ‘hard’ and more angry than female, but this image shows him to be smart and the opposite.

Usually, younger people (especially males) are going to be dressed in jeans and a hoodie, not a smart collared shirt, therefore this is an unsterotypical image.

Page 3: Question 2

Front Page: Images The mid shot of the artist on this front page, is very well posed, which is conventional. He is seen as an unsterotypical young male as he is the complete opposite of youths his age. He is holding a collar on his shirt to signify that he is cool and has style too. His facial expression is natural and plain to make him look more mysterious to grab the audience into the magazine. Normally males on a magazine are seen as quite masculine, and not wearing smart clothes, but more male and casual clothing. Normally they would have a neutral expression on his face, which the artist does, so in this way, is quite stereotypical and conventional.

Page 4: Question 2

Front Page: Mise-en-scene

The lighting is a natural lighting to expose his facial features/expressions more. I have dressed him in smarter clothes to not be the usual stereotypical young male. It is in a quite fashionable way, which some males could dress. The hair of the artist is up and ‘jazzy’ which could connote that he is cool and popular. The setting is on a plain wall to make it more conventional for a magazine. Usually males will

be wearing quite darker clothes and much more casual, when posing for a magazine, but the artist on my magazine is the complete opposite to not follow the representation of usual males.

Page 5: Question 2

Front page: Colours The colour of the main image is quite plain and not too colourful, but having a white shirt which signifies innocence and goodness, whilst it also has a positive connotation which most younger males wouldn’t normally wear as they would want to be seen as masculine. The colours used around him a white and red which is a weird mixture because red connotes danger, fire but at the same time also romance and strength, as it goes with the whiteish/pinky background. Usually colours for this genre should be a wide variety of mixed light fun colours. I have only used 3 maximum for my front cover as it is suppose to be a representation of billboard which don’t use that many colours.

Page 6: Question 2

Front Page: Typography The typography signifies the male in the photo to be quite cool as they’re cool fonts and there is a wide range of them, there is a mixture of serif and sans serif which shows the mixture of masculinity an femininity. I have chose to use a modern sense of style for the typography which can link in with the young modern artist. As he is a young male the main fonts will be sans serif to represent masculinity and more manliness.

Page 7: Question 2

Front Page: Language The language I have used on the front page is simple short and snappy words to grab peoples attention. The cover story 'LOUIS Ayres NEW ALBUM NEW MUSIC NEW GOSSIP’ is quite catchy which makes the artist on the front look more attractive and stands out, because he is young the words are simple, and not too long or too big for the viewer to read.

Page 8: Question 2

Contents page: CameraworkThe camerawork are mainly mid shots to close ups. I have used a mid/close up of Louis holding the microphone so that people can easily see what he is holding and to show his facial expression which shows him singing which will be stereotypical for a singer. I done this so you can also easily see what he is wearing, which is also unsterotypical for a young male as he is wearing a jumper with a collar whereas most males would wear a hoodie. This represents him as quite fun and young. The shot of Mollie which is a long/mid shot so you can see her outfit, which is conventional for a pop magazine, and represents her as fun and bubbly as she is wearing bright clothes, for example she is wearing a bright pink top, which is also fashionable. She is looking away from the camera to seem powerful and defiant. The image of the fan and Gary Barlow is in a wide shot to see them both, which is also a mid close up to see both their facial expressions and their costumes which ae quite fashionable.

Page 9: Question 2

The images on the contents page are all of the artists. They all seem to be fashionable and go in with the genre of the magazine as they are all bright and fun. All of them are quite young which is conventional for a young pop magazine. The images of the artists all seem to be happy and smiling which is also conventional for a pop magazine. The image of Mollie represents her as quite defiant as she is looking away from the camera and shows her as quite a bold person, she also stands out because she is wearing quite colourful clothes. The image of Louis holding the prop (microphone) shows him to be a normal pop star and as he is holding a microphone represents him as quite cool and fashionable.

Page 10: Question 2

Contents: Mise-en-scene The setting for most of these images are on a plain wall which is conventional as there shouldn’t be too much going on in a magazine like billboard. The only props used in these images are the ones of Louis holding a microphone to represent him as a singer, because he is really young for a singer it is unstereotypical for this. Lighting on these images are all light as its on a plain wall, I made it light because you can see easily their facial expressions and their body language and it is much clearer. Most images on a contents page are mainly close ups or mid shots.

Page 11: Question 2

Contents: Colours

The colours on my contents page goes along with the house style and the front colour of the red colour, which signifies danger but also passion and romance. This is a mixture as there is males and females. The colours on the artists are all quite colourful which represents them as fun and bubbly. The text is black on a white background to make it stand out more and contrast to the images. Mollie is wearing a bright pink top which is associated with femininity and sweet which could possibly go with her personality and represent here as a sweet girl. The image of the front cover in the top right corner, as I said previously, is a mixture of white and red which connotes positivity and kindness with a mixture of red which connotes danger and passion. This goes well with the house style altogether.

Page 12: Question 2

Contents: Typography

The typography on this is mainly serif which is modern and elegant, this can also be seen as feminine. This represents the artists as also being quite modern and also young.

Page 13: Question 2

Contents: Language The language on the contents is alike the front cover, short and snappy which goes with the magazine genre and the billboard type magazine. ‘LOUIS AYRES: new superstar tells all in this interview’ stands out as it sounds interesting and therefore makes the artist himself look more interesting.

Page 14: Question 2

Double Page Spread: Camerawork

The camerawork I have used here is a mid shot of the artist, I have used this because you can easily see his facial expression which is quite shocked and stunned, which goes with the whole article. I also used this shot because you can see what the artist is wearing, which is quite colourful fashionable smart clothes, this represents the actual artist to be smart and stylish. This is unstereotypical as it is a young male who, yet again, is wearing smart shirts, which is unlike normal males in that sort of age range.

Normally, males in a double page spread would have a wide shot and do some untidy pose. Mine is unstereotypical as he is more of posed than usual and in a mid shot.

Page 15: Question 2

Double Page Spread: Images My double page spread image is a posed male, looking shocked facing the camera, this is so it goes with the whole article. He is in a mid shot to see clearly what he is wearing and his facial expression. This mid shot represents him as a normal fun boy. It is unstereotypical to his age range because normally they are seen as teenage adolescents who can be immature and juvenile.

This image is unlike my one and this is seen as a stereotypical male singer. Mine isn’t posed like this because I would like people to see the outfit the artist is wearing.

In this image, this can be seen as a stereotypical male as he is wearing normal casual clothes, with a facial expression unlike the artist in my double page spread.

Page 16: Question 2

Double Page Spread: Mise-en-scene

The lighting used in this is a natural lighting, which is quite light which is conventional to go for a pop magazine as it isn’t dark and scary. I also used a natural lighting to go with the whole article so you can easily see the main body of text. This is on a plain background which is also conventional as it is clearer and more organised. He is wearing a smart fashionable shirt which is unstereotypical for his gender and his age, whereas most boys would wear a normal t shirt, hoodie and jeans, he is wearing a mart buttoned up collar shirt. He is also wearing a gold watch on his wrist which is unstereotypical for boys, as they aren’t always seen as fashionable and stylish, especially around that age.

Page 17: Question 2

Double Page Spread: Colours

The colours I have used in this double page spread all go well together. There isn’t a wide range which is conventional. They are mainly blue, white and black. His shirt is also quite colourful which is conventional for the genre of magazine. The colours on his shirt represent him as a fun bubbly pop star. The blue which I have used in this double page spread which connotes intelligence and loyalty, which can represent him as this. The white text which signifies positivity, is used in this also to go well with the rest of the double page spread.

Page 18: Question 2

Double Page Spread: Typography The typography is mainly in a sans serif type font, this shows is more modern and more masculine, to represent the artist on the double page spread as that. There are serif fonts as the pull quotes to make the page stand out and also make the image of the artist stand out. The main body of text is in a normal plain font, this is conventional as it isn’t too in your face. The main typography is in a blue font to represent him as more manly.

Page 19: Question 2

Double Page Spread: LanguageThe language on this double page spread is to represent the artist as new and cool. I use phrases like ‘It’s still a big weird dream’ and ‘I don't even class myself as famous’ to represent him as a normal boy.

I have used this phrease to tell people that he is still really young, and represented as a good singer at the same time.
