Question 2 • How does your media product represent particular social groups?

My magazine is mainly aimed at teenagers who like alternative/alternative rock music. I found that magazines like Q and NME were helpful when creating my magazine and from looking at them I worked out how to represent the alternative rock genre and how to go about creating my magazine.

• In a stereotypical alternative rock magazine there would usually be a male performer on the front cover however I have not followed this convention and have chosen to put a female on the front cover because some magazines do use women on their front covers, it is just more common to find a male on the front. I have done this because I think it will appeal to a teenage audience and that they will see my cover star on the front and want to know more about her, I think her style and poses throughout my magazine represents my target audience as casual and carefree. It escapes the idea that teenagers listen to music in order to get rid of their problems and can portray that people listen to this genre because it makes them happy. The photos I have used are interesting, artsy and colourful which can be seen as quite fun and youthful. My pictures represent specific traits that teenagers have which is why I have used them.

Relatively serious but the slight smirk might represent a good mood or just general happiness.Playful and

can represent the feelings towards the image of Amy Winehouse which include respect, admiration and the feeling that my cover star thinks the artist is ‘cool’ which can influence others.

This picture can be interpreted as the more rebellious and cheeky side of teenagers. The graffiti writing which says ‘If you’re bored you’re boring’ is an important part of it and the fact that my artist is crouching in front of it shows that she thinks this is ‘cool’ and agrees with the statement. My audience might agree with her and become interested in her as an artist because they can relate to it.KO-KO is a well known concert

venue in Camden so I have decided to include it in my music magazine because British teenagers might know of it and wish to be informed on who’s performing.
