Question 2How effective is the combination of your

main product and ancillary texts?

Page 2: Question 2

Looking at my ancillary texts shows that there is a house style when it comes to work from my product, with the text for both titles, subtitles and small print being set from the poster. Although the title fading into black isn't reciprocated at every instance, the font is kept the same throughout. The general darkness of my poster was part of an initial setup of my media piece where it was set in a pitch black room, however it still creates a strong hermeneutic question as to where the piece is set. Although we did move to an outside location, the sense of mystery was maintained and thus we kept the black background of the poster. The main image on the poster is effective in promoting the mysterious nature of the short film, instantly creating hermeneutic questions as previously mentioned. The fact that we used two images of the same actor staring at the main character should immediately cause the audience to question what is occurring in the image, while still wondering about the setting, as previously mentioned. Although this minimalistic poster could not always be received well amongst audiences, we believe that it fits our piece well enough.

When looking at a film review magazine we saw that there was no trend amongst them when reviewing films to include them in a specific layout or colour scheme. This meant that we would not have to be concerned with a specific colour scheme or house style to fit our piece when sortingout the review. Outside of specialone-off parts the layout for shortfilms is generally all the same. Weattempted to emulate this with ourfinal film review, adding a tint tothe background to make the textstand out slightly more.

The mise-n-scene of the final piece and that of the poster are both very different, with the final piece being filmed in a well lit outside area. The exact location is never explicitly mentioned, thus keeping a sense of mystery, however the dark nature of the ancillary therefore doesn't fit the bright film footage. However this does take away any dominant feelings of fear that may be created as a connotation of the darkness, as the audience is never put in a place of fear throughout the piece as they are more an observer than a participant in what is going on. However the inconsistency is still obvious between the main product and the ancillary.

Although initially not too obvious, our piece does deal with the representation of those who have psychological problems. Our main character is revealed to have committed suicide because of her unstable state of mind. However this theme isn't overly explored during the text, as we were hoping to prompt more audience thought on what they do towards those who have mental problems. This wasn't specifically aimed at an age group or a specific gender, but instead it was an attempt to get people to consider things they may normally ignore in the world around them.
