How does your media product represent particular social groups?
Transcript

The front cover presents an image that is an extreme close up. This allows the target audience to clearly see the makeup worn on the artist. Red lipstick and black eyeliner is stereotypical makeup for a woman in the rock industry to wear. This represents the female gender as fiery, passionate and hot headed. The colour red is also

an indication of love and lust which suggests women are idolised by both female and males.

The subject who is posing as the artist also appears to be a young adult. This is currently a typical representation as artists are commonly ‘young and fresh’. It is clear she is a young adult as within the mise en

scene she is throwing around a prop; a guitar. This is a slightly more immature/wilder approach to posing with a guitar as if it was an older artist they would perhaps be just sat down playing the guitar. Having my artist appear to be a young adult appeals to my target audience and becomes an ‘idol’ for them to aspire towards. This is a positive representation of young women as they are seen as becoming successful and passionate about their

careers.

The social class of the female artist is represented through also the Mise en scene. She is wearing a watch which in its appearance looks expensive. This shows that she is capable of buying material things. This is

typical stereotype for artists to spend their money on material items. This is a negative stereotype of them and also because she is a female she may be circled as vein or smug.

The pull quote ‘’ I did get kicked out of my hotel in London’’ promotes an extreme behaviour and gives a sense of them having ‘no fear’ because they are famous. This is a stereotypical representation of singers as middle class people believe they can get away with everything and are not necessarily following the rules of society.

The mid shot of a male artist on the contents page shows him wearing a denim jacket. This is not a stereotype of a male rock artist to wear and represents him in a way that appears to be he is breaking the rules. This is a

stereotype for males but is more of a stereotype for the genre of rock.

The other female artist who is presented in the smaller photo on the contents page is shown to have a high social class as she is wearing fur. Fur is seen to be an expensive piece of clothing and again suggests she

spends a lot of money on outfits and material items. Fur clothing is also frowned up on by many people, which represents the artist in such a way, that she is shown to not care for morals and what other people think she should do. She is following her own beliefs and has the confidence to do so. This is a typical stereotype for

people within the rock industry.
