Question 2: How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary text?

By Asyia [Group 3}A2 Media Evaluation

Our Media A2, brief was to produce a film which is 5 minutes long at least, a radio trailer no longer than 0:30-0:33 seconds long and a film poster professionally edited to look approachable and realistic. We were able to choose any type of genre, as long as we were able to understand it in depth analysis and able to produce it to the standards of the genre itself. The radio trailer had to be appealing and interesting to our target audience, as it was just a voice recording not telling them know what the whole film was about.

Introduction

Film Poster: Drafts (practicing and experimenting

As our film is a psychological horror, we had decided to make sure the film posters matched the film exactly and the mise-en-scene was matched to the genre. The first few drafts use the draft themed colours which emphasis the darkness pit which you are placed in with PTSD. The Mise-en-scene which we used in the film was the scene which our protagonist is having a immediate flash back of his past warzones. As in the film is it shown him in a military attire, for our film poster we took a few pictures of our leading character in the black uniform which is the military uniform as he had just recently returned from there. In both the film and film poster we used both costumes as this would make it look more as if they matched and it was not something unusual. In both film and film poster the protagonist is looking the same as well. The themes which link both film and poster is how there is a destroyed battle scene, in the film poster there is also a scene which was merged and blended into with the main image of our film poster.

Mise-en-scene/Themes used to link both film and ancillary text:

The framing of the images in the poster was kept quite simple and focused. By placing a large mid-shot head image of the leading character is lets the audience know who the main character is and who they should be concentrating on through the movie. As for the background the framing was made to take shape of the main images as it reflected the personality and the storyline of the the main character.

Framing

There are a number of things which stand out clearly which link the film and film poster together. The first thing would be the settings and locations, in the film it is a warzone in the poster a warzone fiery image was used as well as images of our protagonist. The use of the same costumes and attire of the main character links it back to the film as it is showing exactly is worn, the image of the leading actor is also used which shows specifically who the audience is supposedly has to be concentrating on as they follow the storyline. The use of colours in both productions are dark, mysterious and colours which would represent or be chosen are responding in answer to danger. The use of props in kept the same as in the film for the dream sequence used the solider is recorded holding a gun as a weapon, in the film poster one of the images used the protagonist is also holding a gun. The image and how the protagonist is actually presented is kept the same. The same outfits, same hair styles and attitude as it is representing the character to how we designed the profile of the protagonist as.

What key aspects of the film link to the film poster?

In the final poster we used the image of the solider in the military uniform from the actual film which then relates back as the uniform is representing his time working with military which is causing the PTSD and the horrific flash backs. In the the first few scenes in the film the protagonist is wearing the bland, dull colours, these costumes were chosen it was something not to over the top and basic as he is just returning from finish his duties. In the film there are quite dark backgrounds, lighting and locations. We used that to created our poster by making images quite faded and use the shadowy and gloomy, as it gives off a depressive and trapped feeling. The fiery background used in the film poster, was inspired by the dream scene, war scene which connotes the exposure to quick danger.
