Question 2How does your media product

represent particular social groups?

Dominant representation of 20-40 yr olds

The average person in their late twenties to forties will generally be expected to have grown out of partying and have a serious work ethic and want to achieve and succeed in order to build a family and settle down.

My magazine shows an alternative representation of this age group that shows them as being very laid back, and having a serious work ethic when it comes to music, but not worrying about succeeding in an

office job, money is just another

materialistic object to these people, and its only

necessary to pay bills.

W O M E NDominant ideologies for women in media are shown as very sexually available, feminine and romantic. The image shown on the left was one of the first to come up when I searched “woman” onto Google images. During the course of my magazine I have tried to steer away from that stereotype by showing women as strong-minded, independent and show no sexual availability at all. This way my magazine can be more focussed on music rather than imagery.

M E NThe image shown on the right is a dominant representation of males in media today. They are often photographed topless to show off a perfectly airbrushed six pack. The overall dominant ideology of males connotes a macho, cheeky and selfish representation. My magazine has a lot of realism in that it shows men not really caring about their body image, and enjoying their lifestyle and being opinionated on things that interest them, I think it is important to the genre that my magazine is represented this way so that it’s more focussed on the music rather than the image it is presented as.

Wo r k i n g C l a s sMy target audience are mostly working class, commonly described as unsuccessful people that haven’t achieved much and aren’t very intelligent due to not being well educated. I try to show my audience as aspirers that want to succeed, but are only working for money to live off and probably don’t enjoy their actual job, but aspire to be musicians, and probably didn’t carry on their education in order to follow this. The people I'm trying to represent are radicals and hedonists.
