Question 3: What have you learned from audience feedback

Target Audience• Before we asked for any audience feedback, we as a group had to decide exactly

who we were aiming our media product at and why. • We decided that our product would be a music video.• We considered the style of video we would want to produce, and the type of people

that would be interested in viewing it.• Once we had decided on our song Brimful Of Asha by Cornershop, we decided that it

would be interesting to cross over this Brit pop era song, to a new and relevant audience.

• We decided that our target audience would be 16-24 year old males and females, interested in indie music.

• To stick to the original video, yet at the same time refer to relevant trends and styles, we added a hippy vibe to the video and ancillary products, by introducing an element of bright colour throughout all our products. We also introduced a ‘groovy’ feel to our video by introducing psychedelic dance moves. This was to add a modern style to our video which other Indie bands have previously introduced, whilst also acknowledging Cornershop’s original video.

Page 3: Question 3

• At the beginning of the project, we used focus groups to come up with initial ideas and our final song choice. We offered a variety of choices to class members, from Arctic Monkeys to Dizzie Rascal.

Page 4: Question 3

• The result from the class showed Arctic Monkeys- When The Sun Goes Down song, to be the most popular and Brimful of Asha to be the second most popular. After group discussion, we decided that, even though the audience preferred the Arctic Monkey song, we as a group felt that perhaps this choice had been influenced by the fact that this particular band were local and relevant to the small group of people that we asked within the focus group. We also felt that our chosen song fitted better with the style of the video we wanted to produce. This was a good example of how audience feedback helped us to narrow down our choices, whilst at the same time, still allowed us to have the final decision. Something we as a group considered important.

After help from focus groups, we as a group sat down and asked

other class members to help us decide on a

beginning, middle and end. This initial

planning however, altered quite drastically, as our ideas developed

and became increasingly more

realistic for the time and technological devices

we could acquire.

Page 6: Question 3

This Questionnaire helped us to decide a number of things about the video at this early stage, mainly about aspects of mise en scene, for example; The costumes that would be required to connote a stereotypical representation of an indie star. We analysed all of the questionnaires and the answers people had given and came up with our final costume ideas for each character.

Page 7: Question 3

We as a group conducted a PowerPoint presentation to the class about our ideas. After watching the presentation, class members were invited to comment

and answer a few questions on what they liked and disliked about our ideas. Some comments made were, that we could possibly add various colours to

stick to indie codes and conventions, as well as the video’s original Brit pop era vibe.

Page 8: Question 3

From the success of our presentation, we decided to repeat the exercise for our final video, from this, we decided that our miming could be better timed,

we took this in to consideration and instantly changed it.

Ancillary Tasks

Page 10: Question 3

• We showed class and staff members our final CD package and poster in the hope of gaining extra knowledge and opinions on how to make them better and more realistic.

• Some comments which were made were, that our font could be better and we could include quotes on our poster to stick to codes and conventions of real media products.

• We took these points into consideration and altered both things.

Improvements from feedback

• A number of improvement we noted needed addressing after considering all our audience feedback were as follows;

• Lighting/Settings in our video- We felt that these were hindered by the fact that we had limited access to professional studios/ lighting technologies. We did however feel that under the circumstances, we did manage to make our finished product as professional as possible.

• Digipack- We decided to make our CD a three part promotional package, based on the Indie play on words ‘Hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil.’ We felt that this idea gave our product a unique selling point. Our audience feedback helped us with this, we gathered a small focus group to discuss this idea, every member of the group seemed to support this idea and after experimentation, we too felt that this would have a positive impact on what we were trying to achieve.

Page 12: Question 3

• Overall, we as a group feel that we have successfully achieved a realistic media product and supporting ancillary tasks to the best of our ability, considering that we had limited access to certain professional technological devices/settings and time.
