How did you use media technologies in the

construction and research, planning and evaluation

stages?

Page 2: Question 4

◦ Media 2.0 was our main source when researching music videos, all of our ideas stemmed from;

◦ YouTube- watching existing videos ◦ Facebook- correct target audience, moodboard.◦ Google chrome- research theorists ideas◦ IPod touch- another source to watch videos

Research.

Page 3: Question 4

I think that when using these different types of technology some were more efficient than others in order to research music videos.

I believe that YouTube was the most helpful as I was able to research the punk/rock genre which was the genre of my song and study the mise en scene, locations, costume & props, lighting and proxemics etc.

We used Photoshop to create a moodboard of pictures that linked in with the genre of our music video and I found that this was a great way of brainstorming ideas, especially in image form. We uploaded it onto Facebook to gain feedback.

I think personally I could have used more digital technologies to plan my work and I believe I could have put more work in, however I still managed to use quite a few different technologies.

Nikon D60 DSLR Camera- We used a camera to take pictures of the locations we were interested in and we took test shots to see what whether the lighting was any good on camera. We used the swimming pool basement as a location as we thought it would create a ‘grungy vibe’, however when looking at the pictures it became apparent to us that the lighting was pretty dark and the camera struggled to pick up peoples faces.

Planning.

Blogger- I used blogger in order to store my research and planning, I found it really good for just making notes and writing down how well the planning was going. I was able to access Blogger at college, at home and I could use It on my IPod touch, as long as I had access to Wi-Fi. This meant that I could keep note of where I was with the planning stages and if I had an idea I was able to access Blogger straight away without any hassle.

Mobile Phone- My mobile phone isn’t an Iphone therefore when accessing the internet on my phone it isn’t the best! However I used my mobile for planning as I was able to text various people who were taking part in my video to makes sure they were available for test shoots and to organise meetings etc. But overall my phone was quite useful.

PowerPoint- I used Youtube in planning as we created a pitch, in order to show our ideas to the class and gain feedback to what audiences thought of our original ideas. PowerPoint was useful throughout my project as I used the programme a lot to present my work and ideas.

Youtube- In order to plan what shots, and angles we were going to use in our video we created some test shots and shots of angles and put the videos onto Youtube to show our original ideas.

When filming the actual video we used both the Panasonic DV cameras and HD Cameras. The reason we had to use both was due to everyone wanting to use the HD cameras, therefore they tended to always be booked out. We managed to use the HD cameras for filming the storyline of our video, which meant it was better quality and looked excellent on screen. We used the DV camera for filming the band in the basement, however even though the camera was if less quality compared to HD, I felt that it made the basement look slightly darker on screen and this was actually a good point as it created a great rocky effect on screen.

Construction.

If I had to compare the cameras I would definitely say that the HD camera was much easier to use. This was mainly because it was a lot simpler to set up, and instead of using the old tapes like the other camera, it used SD card, which meant we could just slot it in, instead of having to wind the tapes back and forth. However I think that both cameras were both easy to use when filming, and that with the accessories such as tripod etc they helped my video to look as professional as possible.

Adobe Onlocation- We used Onlocation in order to upload the video onto the D drive. We didn’t initially have any problems with this programme as it was pretty easy to get the hang of.

Adobe Premiere Pro- We used this programme in order to edit our video and make sure the lip syncing was correct. When I first used this programme in my first year I found it quite hard to use, however after doing test videos and having a chance to edit them I was able to learn about the tools on the programme and I learnt how to edit correctly.

Adobe Photoshop- I used Photoshop mainly to create my print products and edit pictures, however because I have used it a lot in my own time I found the programme very

useful and easy to use.

Page 11: Question 4

IPhone- Even though I have an IPod touch the internet access relies of Wi-Fi hotspot points and if I wanted to be able to use the internet all the time an Iphone would have been more efficient. I would have also been able to take pictures for test shoots and upload them straight to blogger without any hassle, however my phone doesn’t allow me to do this.

HD camera- if we had booked the cameras out in advance then we would have had access to an HD camera for all of our shots and this may have improved the continuity editing and lighting problem. Also it would have been much easier for us due to the fact we wouldn’t of had to rewind tapes to find the correct footage, we could have just looked on the SD card.

How my production would have improved if I had different technologies at my disposal.

Page 12: Question 4

Technology determinism- I believe in this theory to some degree for example, the technology I had available to me I used therefore the technology I had did determine what I created. However I don’t think the technology completely controlled what I wanted to do, as I already had ideas in my head, I just used the technology available in order to produce these ideas.

Creativity- I think that new technology did help me to improve the creativity of my project to some extent, for example I was able to take pictures on the DSLR camera and then use the editing suite in order to improve my pictures and make them more creative. However I think learning from my mistakes helped me to be more creative as I went along, this links into Sir Ken Robinson’s quote, he said: "If you're not prepared to be wrong, you wont come up with anything original."

Theory.
