WHO WOULD THE AUDIENCE BE FOR YOUR

MEDIA PRODUCT?

Page 2: Question 4 Presentation

The target audience for my music magazine is aimed for an age range of late teens to early twenties. I believe this would be the most appropriate for my

magazine as it is a 60s theme and younger teenagers may not find this appealing. Due to this

specific age range I have made sure that the price of my magazine is quite a moderate price at £2.99

because those who are in their late teens would most likely be a student who would want to spend less on

external purchases such as magazines. Whilst creating my product I was aiming to appeal to an

audience of mainly females, as I think a 60s themed magazine with a genre of pop is what stereotypically

a female audience would prefer.

Target audience research into popular genres:

During my research I created a mood board in which detailed the sort of content that my audience would be interested in seeing in the production of my magazine. I included the colour swatches that would be the home style of my magazine and the various clothing style and makeup choices that would fit the genre of my magazine the best. I included various pop magazines in my mood board as this is the genre of magazine I was appealing to and as I have a lot of interest in this sort of genre and the theme of 60s, I was able to use a lot of myself when creating my magazine with regard to the sort of things my target audience would expect to see.

In terms of my target audience, I had to research in to the sort of music tastes that they’d be in to. I had to take into consideration various aspects of media that my target audience would appreciate such as TV shows, clothing and shops. The clothing I decided had to have a feeling of 60s which were warm, soft and ‘pretty.’ I found that many modern icons in the 60s wore warm knit jumpers which were quite bold and statement which how I chose to dress my model similarly. Also I found the colours during this time were popularly pastel lights, which I tried to dress my model in the double page spread. In terms of shops, I found that high end retailers such as Dorothy Perkins and Miss Selfridge would be what my target audience were most likely to shop in; therefore I made sure to use the items of clothing on my model from one of these stores which was Dorothy Perkins.

It was quite difficult finding the possible TV shows that my target audience would watch that appealed to theme and

genre of my magazine as many shows are now modernised and don’t base their shows are a period of the 60s.

However as the genre of my magazine is pop I thought that as I tried to appeal to an audience of females generally that

my target audience may be interested in shows such as ‘pretty little liars’ or gossip girl. Henceforth I had to dress my model and make sure her makeup appeared in such a

way that related to these sorts of shows.

I was endeavouring to reflect the style of my target audience through the images in my magazine. Such as, the images from my front cover and double page spread have been presented in a way which sets out what my audience may be looking for in a pop genre magazine. My model’s hair has been pinned up and well done in order to seem professional and chic which is sophisticated and elegant, that may relate to the theme of 60s and suit a pop magazine. The hair is pushed back out the model’s face so we get more emphasis on her clothes and makeup which my target audience may be interested in. The body language of my model is quite fun and energetic as well as being well grounded and serious which is what I was trying to present as someone who I would see reading my magazine.

I believe my target audience would buy my magazine because it is different and I tried to include conventions that would attract them.

Such as considering the theme of a 60s magazine is different and unique, I tried to

appeal to this sort of audience by making the images of my model suit this through the way she dressed, her makeup and positioning. My

magazine may generally suit more of the feminine audience as there is a lot of emphasis on effeminate styles such as the bows on the

media product, however considering the colours are dark such as black and grey which is stereotypically colours that associate which

the male gender, my magazine could still appeal to both.

Page 9: Question 4 Presentation

Once I had completed my magazine production I made sure I went back to

interview some of the people which filled in the questionnaire of my research. They all considered the aspects of my magazine and agreed with most of the content and presentation that were on there. Most of

the people I interviewed agreed with what I had created and said that the themes

and conventions are definitely what they would be attracted to and interested in purchasing. Therefore, I feel that I have met my objectives and met the needs of

my target audience which means my magazine is appealing to them and would

hopefully sell.
