Page 2: Question one

The first thing I researched was on my target audience. I asked themwhat interested them when it came to my magazine. I did this byhanding out a physical copy of the survey and then analysed theresults. I found out through research that Ed Sheeran, Florence andthe Machine and the Arctic Monkeys were the most popular artists. Ithen researched how magazines PRESENTED THEM, so I was able tochallenge the form and adapt my design.

This lead me to find…Artists such as Ed Sheeren, The Arctic Monkeys & Florence + the Machine had been presentedin specific ways. I found in my opinion they way they had most successfully been promoted fortheir indie music was on the magazines, Q, NME and Rewind.

Research and analyse some of the conventions Q, Rewind and NME

magazine contain. This would then allow me to challenge theseconventions when it comes to designing my magazine.

I then decided to…

I then continued to look at the traditional conventionsand presentation of Indie musicians. Here is a prezi Ihave made:http://prezi.com/ya5wcfqo6b9x/conventions-of-indie/

Typically Indie Magazines use a andcolour scheme. They use a minimalistic effect whenpresenting information, and like to commonly listthings such as artist and band names. They also liketo use imagery to represent the free lifestyle andthe music. Some magazines go for different effectson their double page spread but I felt the mostsuccessful was a photo montage.

Through research I found that…

CHALLENGING THE FORMS OF A REAL MEDIA PRODUCT: front cover analysis

When trying to do mylogo, I wanted to try andcombine both NMEmagazine and Q magazine.I think I have done thissuccessfully, and the nameSTAMP OF APPROVAL isreally striking and iconic.

I also found that when researching into how indiebands had been represented they’re album frontcovers were often by garages. I thought this wouldbe an interesting technique for my front cover, andI think it has been successful as it looks like thewriting is on the garage.

Finally, being indie is about being different;therefore I thought I would make my model posewith a pout which traditionally a girl would do. It’sa different idea that usually isn’t represented withmen and indie bands.

CHALLENGING THE FORMS OF A REAL MEDIA PRODUCT: contents page analysis

I felt rewind magazine portrayed the indie lifestyle the best, so here ismy adaption. I have made a photo window to divide the page upallowing focus on the pictures

I used some images from the feature artist Harry. I edited them usingan application called instagram. I felt by incorporating cross mediaconvergence and another product within my magazine it wouldincrease the publicity and awareness. The photos also achieve a nicevintage effect.

Here I have added a small caption tagline of the winners photosinstagram links. This also links to their twitter. This prize increasespublicity of the magazine – but also their photography account. Theuse of the winners photos makes the magazine more interesting toregular and new readers, and connects people from different types ofsocial networking. The page also looks iconic, like the front cover.

I have broken up the contents page under the headings “FEATURES”and “REGULARS”. I swapped the order of these after my first draft, asmy audience felt it was more likely to be effective to draw attentionto the new feature spreads every week.

Here are some features which I think represent the indie lifestylealong with the music. I have continued the black white and red(although there is no red featured) colour scheme. I think it issuccessful and would appeal to my target audience.

No page number was used for the contents as it will ALWAYS be the second page of SOA magazine

CHALLENGING THE FORMS OF A REAL MEDIA PRODUCT: double page spread analysis

I have based and adapted my magazinearound an NME double page spread ofthe Arctic Monkeys. I felt it portrayedthe indie genre and lifestyle the mostsuccessfully through the use of theiredited images.

Firstly however I looked for someinspiration by researching how indieartists present themselves…

CHALLENGING THE FORMS OF A REAL MEDIA PRODUCT: double page spread photo examples

Here is an adaption of Indie artist Ben Howards albumphotography. When looking at it I felt it looked very interestingand iconic with meaning. I wanted to adapt my photographyaround this by using a dark mise-en-scene and playing withshadows and sillohettes

CHALLENGING THE FORMS OF A REAL MEDIA PRODUCT: double page spread analysis

As you can see I have adaptedmy photography aroundsimilar indie artists. Theirphotography usually tends tobe in derelict locations with adark mise-en-scene. I alsochose to display my pictures ina photo montage similar tohow the Arctic monkeysdouble page spread presentedtheirs.

Like the arctic monkeys doublepage spread I have done asmall feature including the titleSTAMP OF APPROVAL.Audience feed back told me toadd the title in, so I haveadded it to the left of the boxwhich I think makes a boldeffect and draws the readerseye straight into the title andquote.

The red, black and white colour scheme has been run throughout the front andcontents page. I think it breaks up the interview well making it more manageable toread as well as making the page more attractive to look at.
