Question oneIn what ways does my documentary use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

GraphicsThroughout our documentary we tried to make it look as professionally as possible by conforming to the codes and conventions of documentary making. When an interview is shown on the screen after five seconds of the person speaking, the persons name and information shown up on the lower third of the screen and appeared on the opposite side of the person that was being interviewed. During our opening sequence we had various different cut away’s that made it into a montage of clips that matched what the voice over was talking about. This gave our audience a visually view with the voice over.

Mise en Scene The mise en scene was important to the documentary as it made it look more interesting for the audience. When we was filming an interview with someone who was afraid of wet cardboard, we made sure the backdrop for this was four sheets of brown cardboard. We also did this for someone who was phobic of dogs. We used the green screen to project a picture of a scary dog onto the backdrop so this looked effective. When it was possible to have mise en scene that was relevant to our documentary and what was being said on screen, we did it as it was important to make the documentary visually interesting for the audience.

Cutaways and voiceover.

The voiceover for our documentary was important as it set the tone for the mood of the documentary and what it was going to be like. We used an older man with a deep voice which was very fitting. We used various cutaways that were relevant to the topic that was being spoken about on the documentary such as spiders, dogs, trains, and skydiving. The relevant cutaways conformed to the use of regular codes and conventions of a documentary therefore made it more interesting for the audience.

Framing techniques. We used regular framing techniques throughout our documentary to comply to the codes and conventions and to make it look professional.Making sure the person that was being interviewed was looking off screen at the person who was interviewing them and having their eye level we three quarters up the screen, to ensure the person isn't looking directly into the camera.

In what ways does my print advert, challenge and conform conventions

of real media products?

The text used is very similar to what channel 4 regularly use. Also, the day and time are usually on print advertisements for Channel 4 therefore we decided to put it on ours.

We decided to have one main image with a plain background in order to draw attention to the editing we did on the image. Although Channel 4 do minimal editing on there adverts we wanted to draw a lot of attention to the image.

The banner showing the tag line of the documentary to show the meaning of the documentary and get the message across to the audience.

Banners were used for the tagline and title as Channel 4 do this for every ad.

In what ways does my radio advert use, challenge and conform

conventions of real media products?

• We used the same voice over for the documentary and radio advert to maintain continuity and so the audience would recognise the voice.

• The length of the radio advert was around 30 seconds which is usually how long they are.

• It featured vox pops from our documentary.• It gave information about the time scheduling for the

documentary and included our tag line that was on our print ad.
