Aim and PurposeI carried out this questionnaire in order to find out the preferences and likes and dislikes of the new music magazines target audience so that I am able to include all of the elements needed to make the magazine successful.

I am going to use the results found from the questionnaire to add new elements or change specific parts of the magazines design so that it best suits my target audience.

Methods and Techniques

I chose to do a questionnaire because it allowed me to get results from a wider variety of people within the target audience so that I am able to easily interpret the results and make changes to the magazine from those results.

I also chose to do a focus group of a smaller group of people because it allowed me to get more in depth answers from them which I can also use to make my magazine best suit its target audience.

Audience ProfilingThe results from my questionnaire show that the target audience of my magazine would be between the ages of 21 and 31. The majority of the audience have some sort of income so will be able to pay for the magazine with a disposable income.

Media Purchasing Habits

From the questionnaire results, I can see that my target audience mainly buys around 3 magazines per month with the most popular other music magazines that they would pick up and read being kerrang and Q. The graph shows me that the most popular place to purchase a music magazine is from a newsagent.

Personal Preferences

The results from the questionnaire suggest that pastel colours should be used in the colour scheme. It also shows that my magazine should be released fortnightly and cost between £2.50 - £3.00. The most wanted free gift for the magazine is a CD/Album.

What would you like to see as the main feature of the dou-ble-page spread?

The results from the questionnaire suggest that sepia is the most eye catching image colouring is sepia and the front page should have a similar layout to mojo magazine as it was the most preferred layout. The target audience would like to see up and coming bands featured in the magazine with the double page spread focusing mainly on about the band being featured.

Focus Group In my focus group I interviewed 1 male and 3 females as my target audience is mainly females. All 4 of the individuals in the focus group were between the ages of 17 and 28 and came from Harlow. As a whole, their hobbies included listening to music, socializing and collecting CD’s. The amount of magazines purchased in a month varied from the male participant buying 3 magazines a month and all 3 of the female participants only buying either one or two. All participants from the focus group said that they would prefer for the magazine to be released fortnightly. From asking the participants what price range they pay for their current magazines, two of the female participants said they usually pay around £2.00 - £2.50 for their magazines and the other female and male participant saying they pay around £3.00 for theirs. Two female participants and the male participant all said that they’d like to get a CD as a free gift with a new folk magazine, with the other female participant saying that she ‘d like to get free concert tickets as a free gift. All participants said that they prefer a pastel colouring as the colour scheme of the magazine, and a mixture between black and white and sepia colored images because they think that it will fit the genre of music better than really bright images. Overall, the favourite layout of magazine front cover was one similar to MOJO which was liked because of its simplicity and being easy to read. The majority of the focus group said that they would like to read about up and coming bands in the folk magazine because it allows for more less known bands to be heard by a wider audience and make the folk genre of music appeal to a wider audience, due to the focus group wanting to hear about up and coming bands, they decided that the main feature of the double page spread should be about the band and the making of the album because they would like to know more about the band and how they create their music.

Conclusion and proposal

From the findings from the questionnaire, I have decided that the target audience of my magazine should be females between the ages of 20 and 30, rather than between the ages of 27 and 34 who have a disposable income. I have decided to increase the age range because from the people I asked on my questionnaire, the most common age of people who liked folk music was between 20 and 30. The magazine should be mainly sold in newsagents due to that being the place where the majority of my audience buys their magazines from, due to the audience on average buying 3 magazines per month I must ensure that it is not too expensive so only costs between £2.50 and £3.00 as it will be released fortnightly. The main types of free gifts to be given out with the magazine will be CD’s as it was the most popular choice of the audience. I will make my magazine front page to a similar style of the magazine ‘Mojo’ because over half of my audience preferred that style to any of the others offered. The images used in the magazine will either be sepia or black and white as they are typically used in the folk genre and two of the most popular colour choices from my questionnaire. I will mainly focus my magazine to be about up and coming bands and the main focus within the double-page spread will be about the band so that the audience would be able to know more in-depth information about these less known bands than they would have before.
