Head CoachMatt Crispino

After making an immediate impact on the Tribe diving squad on his arrival in 2000, Dr. Robert Mc-Namee has continued to lead W&M to success from the boards. In 2003-04, he led three of his divers to top-eight fi nishes at the CAA Championships, while 2004-05 saw Carrie Gerloff achieve school records on the board as part of a strong CAA performance. Gerloff captured the bronze medal at CAAs after a school-record dive of 419.75 in prelims. In 2005-06, he coached Joe Cin to all-time top-10 marks in both 3-

Meter categories, and in 2006-07 he tutored Meg O’Connor to the fourth-best all-time performance at the College in the 1-Meter event.

A diving coach since 1975, Dr. McNamee has held various other positions in the world of competitive swimming and diving, including volunteer positions with the United States Synchronized Swimming Team and the Amateur Athletic Union.

With a professional career that spans from his early years as a Dental Offi cer in the United States Navy through years of private practice, Dr. McNamee has amassed an impressive resume. He earned his undergraduate and dental degrees from the State University of Iowa. In 1996 Dr. McNamee was a Medical Logistics Offi cer for the Olympic Games in Atlanta, Georgia. Also a member of several professional organiza-tions, Dr. McNamee is a member of the American Dental Association and the Profes-sional Diving Coaches Association.

In addition to coaching the Tribe diving squad, Dr. McNamee works at the Old Towne Dental Clinic.

Steven Evans comes into his fi rst season on the Tribe’s coaching staff as an assistant coach. Evans, a 2008 James Madison University graduate, was a four-year member of the Dukes’ swimming and diving team. More recently, Evans has worked locally as an assistant coach at the Williamsburg Aquatic Club.

Tribe head coach Matt Crispino says of Evans, “With his swimming experience at JMU and his famil-iarity with the CAA, Steven really knows what it takes to succeed and excel in our conference. Steven comes

highly recommended from his coaches in the Williamsburg area and I look for him to bring an abundance of energy to the pool deck.”

A graduate of of Jamestown High School in Williamsburg, Evans earned his bachelor’s of science in sports and recreation management from JMU in 2008. Evans, who resides in Williamsburg, currently works as an assistant age group coach at the Williamsburg Aquatic Club.

Matt Crispino was named the Direc-tor of Swimming and Diving at his alma mater in September of 2007 after fi ve suc-cessful years spent in the assistant ranks. Crispino became the school’s sixth direc-tor since the men’s and women’s teams were combined in the 1989-90 season, and is the fi rst W&M alumnus to head either swim team since Keith Havens ’76 from 1981 to 1984.

During his fi rst season on campus the men’s swimming and diving team per-formed well and saw a number of school records fall. Junior Shawn Matthews broke his own school-record in the 200

back, touching the wall in 1:49.10 at the Colonial Athletic Association championship. Also at the meet, Jason Brisson set the school-record in the 400 IM with a time of 4:03.26. The 200 free relay team that included Nader Amer, Kevin Gallagher, and Michael Naccarelli earned a second-place fi nish at the CAA Championship, fi nishing in a school-record time of 1:22.93

The 2007-08 season for the women’s team was one of the more successful years in the school’s history. The Tribe would fi nish the year ranked sixth by CollegeSwim-ming.com in the mid-major poll due in large part to the team’s runner-up fi nish at the CAA Championships. Sophomore Katie Radloff was named Outstanding Swimmer of the Meet for the second consecutive year after sweeping the sprint events. Radloff was also named CAA Swimmer of the Year and was named to the CollegeSwimming.com Mid-Major All-American team. Radloff would go on to break not only the school’s record in the 100 free, but also the conference’s record with her time of 48.91 at the NCAA Championships. After her great performance at the NCAA Championships, Radloff would go on to swim at the Olympic Trials. Also having great years for the Tribe were junior Marina Falcone, sophomore Lindsey Guers, and freshman Emily Burns, who along with Radloff , were a part of the winning 400 free relay team at the conference championships.

Crispino returned to his alma mater last season after fi ve years in the assistant coaching ranks. His most recent stop was at Colgate University for the 2006-07 season, where he served as the assistant coach for both men’s and women’s teams. Directly responsible for the sprint corps, Crispino saw his athletes race to 49 lifetime-best per-formances, including four school-records and one freshman record.

Prior to Colgate, he spent three years on the deck at West Point as the assistant coach for both men and women, helping the Corps of Cadets to a 23-12 record and a pair of second-place showings at the Patriot League Championships. In addition to his direct responsibilities for the sprint group, Crispino also helped develop the dry-land and in-pool training regimens for the middle-distance and distance swimmers, leading the team to break 12 Academy and 13 plebe (freshman) records and producing four U.S. National qualifi ers and two NCAA “B” cuts. His 27 sprinters alone achieved 109 lifetime-bests.

Crispino got his start in coaching as a graduate assistant at Florida State Univer-sity, where he worked with several athletes who counted NCAA, U.S. National, and Olympic Trials bids among their accomplishments. He helped guide the Seminole men to a runner-up fi nish at the 2003 ACC Championships, while the women came in third. The teams combined to send seven athletes to the NCAA Championships during his tenure.

The captain and Most Valuable Swimmer of the 2001-02 Tribe men’s swimming team, Crispino helped set the school record in the 800 free relay as a freshman at the CAA Championships, with a time of 6:47.85. In his rookie season, the team placed a program-best second at the conference meet after going 15-1 (6-0 CAA) during the regular season. Crispi-no still ranks among the all-time top-10 in the 100, 200, and 500 free, and is fi fth all-time at the College in the 200 IM.

Crispino received his bachelor’s of arts in government from the College in 2002, and his master’s in physical edu-cation from Florida State in 2003. In July 2008, he married Liz Koch, former Tribe swimmer and CAA Champion in the 100 and 200 fl y. The couple resides in Williamsburg.

Former Tribe swimmer Joey Peterson enters his second season, assisting with all aspects of the swim-ming program.

Peterson was a butterfl y and individual medley specialist, advancing to the consolation fi nals at the CAA Championships four times during his career. His best fi nish came in 2004, when he placed 11th in the 200 fl y as a freshman.

While captain in 2006-07, Peterson helped to lead the Tribe to its fi rst winning season in eight years, 6-3-

1 (4-2-1 CAA), and post a fourth-place fi nish at the CAA Championships. Individually, Peterson claimed nine top-fi ve individual fi nishes during the dual meet season and was part of fi ve top-three relay teams, including the 200 medley relay that was victorious against Georgetown.

A native of Williamsburg and a graduate of Lafayette High School, Peterson earned his bachelor’s of science in neuroscience in May of 2007, and is enrolled in the part-time MBA program at the Mason School of Business.

The 2007-08 edition of the Tribe’s women’s swim program had one of its fi nest seasons in school history, setting numerous school records and qualifying several athletes for the NCAA Championships. After falling just short in its bid to defend its 2007 CAA crown, the Tribe will attempt to reclaim the conference title it earned in 2006 this season. The following is a close look at the squad for the coming year.

Sprint Freestyle Junior Katie Radloff will once again lead the deepest group of sprinters in the College’s history after being named both Swimmer of the Championships and Swimmer of the Year by the CAA for the second consecutive season. After a school and conference-record breaking effort of 48.91 in the 100 free at the NCAA Cham-pionships and swimming at the Olympic Trials during the summer, Radloff remains the swimmer to beat in the conference. Coming off great initial campaigns for the Tribe, both junior Lindsay Guers and sophomore Emily Burns will look qualify for the NCAA Champion-ships and earn All-CAA honors in multiple events in 2009. Sophomores Haley Smith and Stevi Anderson, who were limited most of last season due to injury, will look to contribute right away to the sprint corps. Providing depth to the sprinters this season and with the potential to immediately break into the starting line-up will be freshman Liza McDevitt, who was a three-time All-American at Germantown Academy and totaled 12 championship-fi nals appearances at the Eastern Interscholastic meet in her four years in high school.

Distance Freestyle Leading both the middle and long distance swimmers this year for the Tribe will be senior Marina Falcone, the greatest middle-distance swimmers in school history. Falcone, who earned NCAA provisional marks in both the 200 (1:50.28) and the 500 (4:51.15), will look to re-qualify for the NCAAs and claim her fi rst CAA individual title in 2009. Freshman Molly Emery will look to make an immediate impact in the conference during her rookie campaign, with national-class speed, as best evidenced by her 1,000 free lifetime-best time, which is 17 seconds faster than the current school record. Senior Sara Fitzsimmons, a conference medalist in 2006, will look to close her Tribe career on a high note and qualify for the CAA fi nals in the 200 and 500 free. Junior Tage Waite broke out at the CAA Champion-ship last year with a school-record swim in the 1,650 free and will be challenged to re-tain her position by the return of classmate Jill Hamilton, the 2007 bronze medalist in the 1,650 at the CAAs, from a shoulder injury that limited her to only four meets last season. Sophomores Kristin Fimian and Clare LeGuyader had outstanding swims at the CAA Championships last year. Fimian fi nished in ninth-place in the 1,650 free, while LeGuyader placed 15th in the same race. Freshmen Liz Fireman, Kelly Fini, and Hope Sweetnam all boast impressive prep resumes and will look to contribute right away for the Tribe in both the middle and distance freestyle races for the Tribe this season. Both Sweetnam and Fini were state qualifi ers during their prep careers, while Fireman was a Junior National qualifi er in the 200 and 500 free. Guers, the only woman besides Falcone to swim a sub-fi ve minute 500 in school history, and Radloff are both able to swim the middle distance races and provide quality depth when needed for the Tribe.

Butterfl y Senior Whitney Pezza will lead the butterfl iers this season after breaking the school record in the 100 fl y and fi nishing seventh in both the 100 and 200 fl y last year at the CAA Championships. She aims to win gold at both distances this season, as well as earn a spot on the Tribe’s medley relay teams. Junior Erin Welshofer, the 200 fl y titlist in 2007 and the school-record holder in the event, will look to regain the conference title in the 200 fl y this season. Adding depth to the group of fl iers this season will be sophomores Burns

and Julia Applebaum and freshmen Haley Hewitt and Fimian. Applebaum, a transfer from Vanderbilt, was a YMCA national qualifi er in the 100 fl y during her time at Talawanda High School, while Hewitt, a seven-time All-American, qualifi ed for both the SC Nationals and the USA Swimming Junior Nationals.

Backstroke Replacing Meredith David, one of the greatest backstroker in school history, was a top priority for the Tribe this season, and Coach Crispino has high and justifi ed expectations for the event in 2009. Freshmen Erica Rapp and Hewitt will look to make immediate noise at the CAA Championships in their fi rst collegiate sea-sons. Rapp arrives at the College boasting an impressive prep resume that includes qualfi ying for the USA Swimming Junior Nationals and being a fi ve-time fi nalist at the PIAA state championships. Both look to be contenders, with Rapp specializing in the 100 back and Hewitt in the 200 back. Providing depth to Rapp and Hewitt will be a trio of versatile Tribe swim-mers in Radloff, Fitzsimmons, and Applebaum.

Breaststroke Pacing the breaststrokers this season will be junior Suzanne Figuers and

sophomore Carolyn Royce. Figuers is a threat to medal at either distance, and will look to consistently score points for the Tribe this year. Royce aims to make the fi nals of the 100 breast at the CAA Championships after fi nishing 12th last season, and challenge Figuers to swim the medley relays for W&M. Senior Rebecca Brofft will look to close her career at the College and score points for the Tribe at the conference championships after coming up just shy last year. Both freshmen Megan Berke and Laura Matthews have great po-tential and will look to contribute imme-diately for the Tribe. Berke was a NCSA Junior National qualifi er during her prep career, while Matthews was named fi rst-team all-conference as a senior. Adding depth to the group of breaststrokers will be junior Courtney Alles, who owns the seventh fastest 200 breaststoke in school history.

Individual Medley IM specialist Alles will once again look to contend at the CAA Championships and regain the two titles

she won as a freshman in 2007. Last year, she won the consolation fi nals of the 400 IM and fi nished eighth in the 200 IM. Although Alles will headline the group of IM specialists, the Tribe has numerous swimmers who will be able to provide great depth when needed. Among those who will be called on during the season will be Pezza (third in the 200 IM at the CAAs), Figuers, Emery, and Hewitt.

Diving Providing veteran leadership for the divers will be senior co-captain Sam Greenwood, who will lead a very solid group of divers for the Tribe this season. Sophomore Sarah Cannon scored in the top eight at the Terrapin Invitational as a freshman and will look to move up the scorig ladder at the CAA Championships this season. Sophomore Jean Rodini and freshman Maureen Reed will look to contribute heavily to the unit and are expected to score a signifi cant number of points for the Tribe this year at the conference championships.

Relays This season the Tribe has a great opportunity to not only qualify its fi rst relay team to the NCAA Championships, but has a chance to qualify all three free relays. The NCAA-quality swimmers the Tribe boasts in both sprint and middle-dis-tance free events makes this year the strongest season yet for the relays. Both medley relays will have to overcome the loss of Meredith David, who swam the lead-off leg for both relays the last four years.

17MEN’S 2008-09 PREVIEW

After the 2007-08 season saw the squad make solid gains across the board, the team returns for its coming year looking to challenge for its fi rst Colonial Athletic Association title in the College’s history.

Sprint Freestyle Leading a deep group of sprinters this season will be junior Kevin Gallagher. Gallagher had a great sophomore campaign last sea-son, setting personal records in both the 50 and 100 free, and is expected to be a contender for the conference championship in both events. Senior Nader Amer will once again be counted on as a solid competitor in the sprint events, and will look to improve his sprint times and contend for a CAA Championship. Sophomore Michael Naccarelli broke the College’s freshman record in the 50 free at the CAA Champion-ships with his time of 21.22 and should improve to the point of challenging for the conference title in both the 50 (21.05) and 100 free (46.23). Fresh-man Marty Harm will challenge to make the championship fi nals at the CAAs, and enters the College after earning four All-American awards dur-ing his senior year at Christian Brothers Academy. Providing depth to the group of sprinters during the year will be junior Kevin Lynch, sophomore Andrew Quesenberry, and freshman Max Glober, who helped The Bolles School win three state high school championships in Florida.

Distance Freestyle Senior Jeff Collier will once again be amongst the favorites to win the 1,650 free at the CAA Championships this year, and will look to reclaim the speed he showed as a freshman and challenge the Tribe’s distance records. Senior Shawn Matthews will pace the middle distance swimmers and look to contend for the conference title in the 500 free. Providing depth in the middle distance events, with more of an emphasis on the 200, will be sophomore Geoff Ramsdell and Gallagher. Backing up Collier in the distance events will be a young group of swimmers looking to make a splash at the conference level. Sophomore Austin Baraki has the speed to contribute in the 500 as well as the longer races. Freshmen Callum Lawson, Stephen Fay, Luke Robbins and Colin Stanton will all look to score points at the CAA Championships, as they all arrive on campus boasting impressive prep resumes.

Butterfl y The group of butterfl y swimmers this year for the Tribe is incred-ibly deep and head coach Matt Crispino can count on several athletes to step up and headline both the 100 and 200 events. Leading the fl iers in the 100 this season will be a group that includes Amer, Lynch, and Ramsdell, along with freshmen Harm and Matt Krebs, who helped lead Robinson High School to four Virginia state titles. Pacing the Tribe in the 200 fl y this year will be seniors Jason Brisson and Amer, along with freshmen Evan Mulloy and Stanton. If the fl yers continue to show the steady progress of the past season, the group has a great chance of not only scoring at the conference meet, but also competing for a CAA title.

Backstroke Headlining the corps of backstrokers will be the senior duo of David Mangini and Matthews. Mangini will challenge for the title in the

200 back after fi nishing fi fth last season at the CAAs with a personal-best time of 1:51.87. Matthews will be looking to claim a conference title at both distances after breaking the school records with performances of 50.94 and 1:49.10 and qualifying for the championship fi nals in both events. Providing depth in the backstroke events this season will be junior Marshall Raiskin, who was a fi nalist in both the 100 and 200 back at the CAA Championships, and freshmen Jake Maloy and Krebs. Maloy was an All-American in the 100 backstroke his senior year at Culpeper High School.

Breaststroke In the breaststroke events, the Tribe will be led by Brisson, who is again expected to be a top contender at the CAA Championships after fi nishing fi fth last season in the 200 breast. Freshman Derek Bui comes to the College with an impressive prep resume that includes being a Junior Nationals Qualifi er the last three years in both breaststroke events. Bui is expected to challenge in both events at the CAA Championships. Sophomore Jim Fenningham, who had a strong performance for the Tribe last season at the Terrapin Cup Invitational, will be counted on to provide depth for the team this season. Joining Fennigham in provid-ing depth will be junior Drew DeMichaelis, who had a breakout season and earned his fi rst career victory in the 100 breast last year against Dela-

ware, and freshman Jack Collins, who was a multiple-time state fi nalist in high school.

Individual Medley Leading a strong group of versatile swimmers for the Tribe will be seniors Brisson and Mangini, who are both expected to challenge for conference titles in both the 200 and 400 IM. Brisson set the school-record in the 400 IM last year at the conference meet with a time of 4:03.26 and also took third in the 200 IM, while Mangini was a fi nalist in the 400 IM. Providing strong depth in what is one of the team’s best events will be Collier, a 400 IM specialist, along with Ramsdell and Krebs.

Diving Sophomore Mike New-comb will have some company on the diving platform this year after being the lone diver for the squad last season. Newcomb performed

well last season for the Tribe, scoring a collegiate-best 202.80 at the CAA Championships in the 3-meter dive. Freshman Kyle Comiskey joins the Tribe this season, arriving on campus as one of the best high school divers to come out of Virginia last year. Comiskey will look to emulate the solid freshman campaign Newcomb had last year and the duo expects to score signifi cant points for the team at the CAA Championships this season.

Relays Last season at the CAA Championships, the Tribe suffered two disqualifi cations, one in the 400 freee relay and one in the 400 medley relay. The team will look to bounce back this season and look to be amongst the top three or four in the conference, and all relays could challenge for titles at the conference meet. Along with challenging for gold at the CAAs, all relays have a legitimate shot at rewriting the school’s record book during the season after the 200 medley and 200 free relays did so in 2007-08.

CAA REVIEW

29HEADLINE

William and Mary is committed to building and maintaining outstanding facilities for all 21 of its varsity athletic teams. The College has demonstrated this commit-ment by investing approximately $16 million toward the construction and upgrade of its athletics facilities during just the last fi ve years. Among W&M’s recent proj-ects was the construction of the $11 million, 30,000-square foot Jimmye Laycock Football Center, which was dedicated this past June. In recent years, the College has hosted NCAA tournament events for football and women’s tennis, while a number of other W&M programs have hosted conference championships at Tribe venues.

The home of William & Mary swimming is the Student Recreation Center Pool, housed in the “Rec” on the west end of William & Mary’s historic campus. Built in 1988, the swimming facility is an 8 lane, 25 yard pool with a fully equipped Dak-tronics timing system. In the summer of 2008, upgrades were made to the facility due to a successful capital campaign conducted by the Friends of William & Mary Swimming and Diving. Among these improvements are a new sound system and soundproofi ng, bleachers for spectators, backstroke fl ags, dry erase boards, and storage benches. The pool also boasts green and gold Paragon starting blocks, an 8 lane Daktronics scoreboard, a new record board, and a recently renovated sauna.

The divers at William & Mary practice and compete in the pool at Adair Gym-nasium. The 6-lane, 25 yard facility located on “new campus” houses two Durafl ex one-meter diving springboards. Three meter springboard practice occurs at nearby Midtown Aquatic Center in Newport News, VA.

ATHLETIC SUCCESS • The 2007-08 season was another strong year for the College, as Tribe teams added four more CAA titles to bring the school’s all-time league-leading total to 92. W&M also had eight different program’s represented at the NCAA Championship level in some capacity.

• The men’s cross country squad won its eighth consecutive CAA crown in the fall, while the women’s cross country team won its fi fth straight. The women’s track and fi eld team won its seventh CAA Championship in the last eight years, while the wom-en’s tennis team added its 20th all-time CAA crown in the 23-year history of the league during the spring

• In total, W&M had fi ve conference players of the year, fi ve conference scholar-ath-letes of the year, 18 All-Americans and 100 athletes earned all-conference honors in their respective sports during the 2007-08 season.

• Individually, the women’s tennis doubles team of Megan Moulton-Levy and Katarina Zoricic garnered All-America honors by advancing to the quarterfi nals of the NCAA Doubles Championship. Moulton-Levy also became the fi rst Tribe athlete and only the fourth in CAA history to win conference player of the year honors for a fourth time. Katie Radloff, who garnered CAA Swimmer of the Year and Swimmer of the Championships honors for the second straight season, earned a spot in the NCAA Swimming Championships for the second time in as many years. Christo Laundry earned All-America honors for the third time in cross country and also won the CAA In-dividual Championship. Women’s soccer player Claire Zimmeck garnered CAA Player of the Year honors for the second straight season and was a semifi nalist for the MAC Hermann Trophy. Additionally, Emily Anderson earned All-America honors with a fi fth-place fi nish in the 1,500m, marking the best Tribe fi nish in 14 years.

W&M A COLLEGE OF CHAMPIONS

31HEADLINE

ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE• The Tribe’s athletic accomplishments do not come at the expense of its student-athlete’s aca-demic responsibilities, as W&M ranked fourth, the highest of any athletic scholarship-granting school and of any public school, among the Division I teams when the NCAA released its inaugural Academic Progress Rate scores in 2005.

• In a recent NCAA survey on graduation rates, William and Mary athletic teams set the stan-dard for academic excellence – 13 teams graduated 100 percent of their players. The overall graduation rate for our athletes is 96 percent (higher than 86 percent for the entire student body).

• There have been 45 student athletes elected to Phi Beta Kappa in the past ten years. Four Rhodes Scholars were W&M student-athletes

• The College’s Athletics Department showed a Graduation Success Rate (GSR) of 86 percent among its student-athletes who entered school on athletics scholarships in the 2000-01 athlet-ics year in data released by the NCAA in 2007.

- The national average among all Division I schools was 63 percent. W&M is tops in both the CAA and among all Division I Virginia schools.

- In 2002-03, the CAA created a Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award in each of its sports, and not surprisingly, W&M has set the pace with 25 winners in the six-year history of the award.
