Quick Users Guide (for viewing and managing photos on for Historic Rivers Flickr site) Flickr can be a bit confusing at first, so this is an attempt to ease the pain for those of you who are new users. Flickr uses something called a Photostream to allow you to view all photos on a site in the order that they were uploaded. The latest photos are always at the top. Once you have uploaded photos you can organize them into Sets of photos. In addition, for Pro accounts, you can crate Collections. Collections can contain other Collections or Sets, and can be used to organize our photos. For example, you can create a Collection called INSECTS and then create another Collection in INSECTS called BUTTERFLIES and add Sets containing different types of butterflies to the BUTTERFLIES Collection. When you go to Flickr using the main link http://www.flickr.com/photos/historicrivers , you will see a page that looks like the one below. I have marked some areas on the page with highlight and a letter. I wonʼt explain all of the functions, but just give you an idea what they are and let you explore on you own. At the top of the page the area A, shows a menu of functions that you can use if you are signed in. If you are not signed in, you do not get most of these menu functions. The next group of commands B, are used for navigating the site and are available to all viewers signed-in or not. You can look at all Sets or look at a map that shows where photos were taken. The group marked C, is the main window and shows the latest photos in the Photostream. The wiggly line means that there are more photos, but I wanted to show what was at the bottom of the page marked F. Note the page navigation. At the very bottom are some quick links. Back to the top right is the Slideshow icon D. This icon appears on many pages and will allow you to view a full screen slideshow starting from the page you are on. The icons at the right of the main page E, are either Collections or Sets depending on the display settings chosen. Clicking on one of the Sets or Collections will show another page of either Sets or Collections or Photos. So thatʼs the general overview and the best way to become familiar with viewing photos on Flickr is to begin clicking. On the next page, is a view of a Set page, in this case the Set of photos that members have uploaded from our 2010 picnic.

If you move your cursor into the map, a closer view will be shown, and if you move youʼre cursor over the location dot, a close up map of the location is shown. Adding comments on photos. Only Flickr members who are signed in can make comments on photos. If you donʼt have a personal Flickr account you can sign on to the historicrivers account using the information you were provided. This page shows the selected photo in a larger size and on a high contrast black background. At the top center are previous and next links so that you can cycle through the photos in the Set in this viewing mode. To return to the Set view, click the Close link at the top right. At the far right top, is a link that allows you to see all the available photo sizes and allows you to download any available size. The available size depends on the original size that the person who uploaded the photo chose. In general, if you are going to print a photo, chose the largest size available in order to get the best print. To return to the Set view, click the Photo link at the top left. Well this should be enough to get you started and you can always email or call me (your webmaster) for help. If there is enough interest, Iʼll add some more information on adding and managing photos.
