Two Possible Fall Calendar Frameworks: F1 and F2

Four Possible Spring Calendar Frameworks: S1, S2, S3, and S4

Major Details to Work Out: The Fall orientation period and the structure of the modified exam periods.

Fall Calendar F1

• 2-day Fall break• 3-day Thanksgiving break• Modified exam period.• Four August class days moved to

December.

This gives the latest possible August start given that the Fall and Thanksgiving breaks stay the same.

Fall Calendar F2

• 1-day Fall break• 5-day Thanksgiving break• Modified exam period.• Four August class days moved to

December.

This gives the latest possible August start.

Possible Fall Calendars

Spring Calendar S1

• February break is 10 days later• Everything else the same

Spring Calendar S2

• The longer 1-week break comes first and occupies a “normal” spring break week in March

• The shorter break is in mid April

Possible Spring Calendars

Spring Calendar S3

• The 2-day break is cancelled.• The 1-week break is in the middle of

March• There is a full senior week

Spring Calendar S4

• Commencement is 2 weeks earlier• The 2-day break is cancelled• The exam period is modified.• The term starts 8 days earlier

CD: Class Days

CD = 69 means that there are 69 class days.

WW: Whole Weeks

WW = 12 means that there are 12 weeks with

Monday through Friday classes.

WB: Weekday Balance

WB = (13,15,13,14,14) means that among class days

there are 13 Mondays, 15 Tuesdays, 13,

Wednesdays, 14 Thursdays,and 14 Fridays.

NYS: New York State’s Class Day Count

NYS = 76 means that (roughly) the sum of class days

and exam days is 76. (75 are required)

Calendar Metrics

:

CDS: Class Day Streaks

CDS = 18-2-28-5-23 means that there are class day

streaks of 18, 28, and 23 that are separated

by a 2-day break and a 5-day break.

CCD: Child Care Days

CCD = 10(2) means that there are approximately 10

Cornell class days that are NOT ICSD class days

and 2 Cornell class days that are NOT ICSD

elementary school half-days. (Based on 2016-17

ICSD calendar.)

A Note About Single-Year Snapshots

What follows are descriptions of Fall Calendars F1 and F2 and Spring calendars S1, S2, S3, and S4. They are illustrated for AY 2016-17.

For the same reason that Labor Day has a one-week range (Sept 1 to Sept 7), every possible semester calendar has a one-week range when it comes to the first day of class and the last day of exams.

These ranges are reported on the slides that follow. Keep in mind that we have “calendar situations” when Labor Day is early or late!
