DIRECTOR ’S NOTES

I discovered the script for Ann Chislett’s Quiet in the Land on a trip to Canada’s Stratford Shakespeare Festival with my students several years ago. While the play, written in 1981, had been performed at the Festival as part of the previ-ous season, I did not get the opportunity to see it. I did however discover a published edition of the script in the Festival Gift Shop. Always on the outlook for new plays, I purchased a copy. It wasn’t until several months later that I finally found time to read it and I was delightfully surprised and moved by the play. I knew that at some point in the future I would like to direct a production. Finally that opportunity has presented itself and I and the entire cast and crew hope that the production will provide you with a thoughtful and involving experience in the theater.

While the play deals specifically with the Amish community in Ontario at the end of World War I and the conflict presented by the attempts of the Canadian government to conscript “pacifist” Amish men into the armed forces, it speaks to each of us of the universal human condition, of the struggle between parents and children in a time of change and social upheaval, of prejudice toward those who are different, of love compromised by religious practice and dogma, and of the difficulty of reconciling the contradictions between tradition, progress and the exercise of individual freedom.

A note from the author on the language of the play, “Among themselves the Amish speak a low German dialect into which many foreign phrases have been introduced. In the play it is introduced into the ordinary speech of rural Ontario. I have used a convention [in the play] that when the Amish are speaking English, as in the scenes with O’Rourke and the Recruiting Office, they speak with a German accent…the English language was looked upon as ‘proud and worldly,’ and once the children had left school [at this time legally at the age of 14], they would not have spoken it again except under necessity. The only books in the home would be a German Bible and the Martyr’s Mirror (a history of Mennonite persecutions in gory detail).”

DEDICATION – SR . LUC ILDA SEWALD OSF (1916 -2010 )

“It seems I always wanted to be a sister, so I cannot remember making the decision.”

It is with the warmest memories and deepest gratitude that I celebrate the life of my friend and colleague Sr. Lucilda Sewald by dedicating this production of Quiet in the Land to her. She would be pleased I think - and humbled - by this recognition

of what was a long and rich life that touched so many others in such a positive way. While her love of sports was legendary, she was also one of the Theater Department’s most loyal fans and she could often be found in a matinee audi-ence of one of our productions. She never failed to send a “thank you” note to our students for sharing their talents with the Sisters.

I first met Sr. Lucilda when I joined the faculty af Cardinal Stritch University in the fall of 1978. At that time she was manager of the campus bookstore, which was located in the lower level of Bonaventure Hall. Her businesslike manner was at first daunting and even a bit intimidating but, as I got to know her, I found her to be congenial, friendly and always helpful. She proved to be a wonderful mentor and friend over the years. I have many stories I could tell but two remain especially warm ones. I remember coming to my office one morning to find an envelope on my desk with no return address. When I opened it to take out the sheet of paper inside, ten new crisp $100 bills dropped out. When I read the note enclosed, it was from Sr. Lucilda. She had written, “Someone recently gave this money to me but I have no need for it. You and the students have been so generous in providing complimentary tickets to the OSF Sisters to your theater productions that I would like you to have it. I’m sure you can find a good use for it.” That generous act made it possible for our students to travel to Stratford, Ontario to the Shakespeare Festival that fall.

On another occasion, as I walked past the bookstore (in its current location), I asked Sr. Lucilda “how are you?” and rushed on to whatever meeting I had to attend. Suddenly I felt a tap on my shoulder; I stopped and found Sr. beside me. She reminded me that I habitually asked her this question as I hurried past but never waited for a response. Thus did I really care “how she was?” I can’t tell you how much I appreciated this gently given admonition. And I can assure you that I never passed her in the bookstore again without going in and listening for a few minutes to how her day was going and sharing how mine was progressing. These were conversations that I will always treasure.

In her later years I often went to visit her at Clare Hall, attending Mass and then staying for dinner. She was always interested in what was happening at Stritch, where she had joined the Science faculty in 1974, finally retiring as the bookstore manager in 1998. She shared with me the work she was doing at the Mother-house and her tutoring of math students at Thomas More High School, once shar-ing with a laugh that her tutoring appointments were scheduled back to back. Didn’t they know she was an old lady? I chuckled as well. I last saw her at the Ju-bilee Mass in which she celebrated the 75th anniversary of her profession. It was truly a joyous occasion, not only for her but also for all of us who were privileged and blessed to share in her wonderful life.
