WELCOME

On behalf of the QSAI Board of Directors, I would like to welcome you to the 2014 Symposium. We will be returning to the campus of Bumpus Middle School in Hoover, Alabama. Quilting has evolved thru the years, with more modern, efficient and technological advances changing our craft for the better. As we prepared for this year’s event, we felt that our name was not a true representation of what our quilt show and classes reflect. Our website reflects that change. ALABAMA QUILTS, we believe says it best. Come enjoy the classes and get acquainted with our wonderful nationally known instruc-tors. We look forward to meeting you, as you explore the techniques pre-sented during your classes, the goodies waiting to go home with you from the vendor’s booths in the shopping mall and the inspiration and delights of the quilt show. Come experience ALABAMA QUILTS!

Conna Canada President/Steering Committee Co-Chair 2014 Quilt Symposium of Alabama, Inc.

MARY STORI www.marystori.com

Mary is an internationally recognized quiltmaker, fashion designer, instructor, lecturer, and quilt show judge who has authored a cookbook, six quilt books and a DVD, "Mary Stori Teaches You Beading On Fabric". Her newest book is "Embellishing With Felted Wool". Mary was named 2004 Teacher of the Year by the Professional Quilter.

She has written extensively and had work appear in scores of quilt magazines and publications. Her award winning work has been widely exhibited both nationally and internationally. She's ap-peared on HGTV's "Simply Quilts" and "Sew Per-fect" several times. An entire episode of Fons & Porter's "Love of Quilting" featured her beaded quilts. She designed the Mary Stori Collection for Kona Bay Fabrics, and her own line of stencils for Quilting Creations.

Her work is often humorous, generously embellished, and displays fine hand quilting. She loves the challenge of creating one-of-a kind quilts and fashions. Traveling world-wide to present lectures and workshops keeps her motivated!

MS1A: UNIQUE BEADING TRICKS (AN INTRODUCTORY BEADING CLASS) Thursday June 5, 2014 9:00-Noon

Students make a reference sampler as they learn easy fundamental beading techniques including the basic bead stitch, straight and curve line beading, scatter stitching, and the lazy stitch. We’ll also learn to attach beads, charms, buttons, trinkets, & unusual objects to quilts and garments. Mary offers an in-depth discussion about beads; the care, storage, equipment needs, and stabilizing methods for your quilt or garment projects. Eliminate sagging beads and untidy looking threads on your embellishments! Class features live video projection, every stu-dent has a front row seat.

Handwork - NO beading experience necessary.

Kit fee required - $5.00 (contains beads, embellishment items, & beading thread).

13

Page 16: Quilt Show Classes Vendor Mall - Amazon Web Services · Quilt Show Classes Vendor Mall. June 5-7, Quilt Symposium. 2014 . of Alabama

MS1B: THE BRIGHT SIDE: BEADED EDGING & BINDING TECHNIQUES Thursday June 5, 2014 1:30-4:30

Learn creative edging techniques to decorate quilt bindings, borders, blocks or outline appliqué motifs with beads in this three hour class. Students make one reference sampler of innovative and easy techniques as they explore the possibili-ties. These bead accents will provide a gently framed or highly dramatic effect to quilts of all construction styles. The tech-niques can also be applied as a decorative border or edging on curtains, tablecloths, napkins, be linens or pillows. Once you recognize the fabulous impact these methods achieve, your existing and in-progress project will surely tempt you. This class features live video projection, every student has a front row seat.

Kit fee required $6 (Contains the beads and beading thread)

Optional kit fee for "mock quilt" $6.

MS2: BEAD EMBELLISHED WOOL COLLAGE Friday June 6, 2014 9:00-4:30

Mary has updated the mid-19th century penny-rug style of embroidered wool appliqué with a new look. Discover the visual warmth of wool, the appeal of embroidery, the charm of buttons, and the pizzaz of beads through a comprehensive visual discussion covering numerous construction approaches and edging treatments. Students learn ‘bead appliqué’ techniques as they collage a tra-ditional, folk art, or contemporary wall quilt or table topper. Using the less costly, readily available, wool blend felt (or 100% felted wool). Work by hand, machine, or a combina-tion...it’s your choice. Recreate one of Mary’s samples or let her help you design your own.

Handwork - machines optional but welcome, all skill levels, no beading experience need-ed.

MS3: WHAT GOES AROUND Saturday June 7, 2014 9-4:30

Here’s your chance to learn how to attach shisha mirrors, paillettes, cabochons, or other stones to your projects with beads. Students will make a small scissors sheath featuring flat, colorful mirrors using the even count peyote stitch to surround the edges of these circles. You’ll also learn the bead embroidery stitch and a clever edging treatment to complete the project in class.

Handwork - no beading experience is necessary

Kit fee required - $15.00 (contains everything you need: precut fab-ric, stabilizer, beads, mirrors, needle, & beading thread).

SHARON SCHAMBER www.sharonschamber.com

I will let my quilts speak for me. Be sure to check out the GALLERY. I started my quilting just like most of you - buying the wrong fabric, using the wrong batting, and using the wrong needles. With time, I learned to use what really works for me, even though the product might not be known as the "right" one. However, I do not, under any cir-cumstances, compromise my standards. I had to

learn what a scant quarter and a fat quarter were. Translating all those unusual terms that we use, so casually, was the next step. The first year was just a spin of learning and creating a base for future quilts. For a novice, the learning curve is quite steep. I remem-ber my grandmother quilting back in the `60s, but everything was so different when compared to today. I hope that the quilt world will be just as different for my grandchil-dren. When I first began I had no idea that quilts were being machine quilted. I remem-ber only that quilts were all hand-pieced and hand-quilted. I remember my Grandma Larsen counting the stitches per inch and ranting about being inconsistent, so that is where I went. I set out to find how many stitches per inch I needed to make my quilts "right." I asked the wrong person, and she told me that it was just rude to ask. This was the first indication that I needed to be a teacher.
